TV Shows - General Discussion

Anyone get to start Altered Carbon yet on the Netflix?
Yup. Nearly finished. I have problems remembering plots and characters at the best of times..... really struggling with the stacks/sleeves setup in this one but hey, I'm just about keeping up thanks to episode recaps
EDIT [possible thematic SPOILERS]: I know it's based on a book and many reviews say the show is pretty faithful to the novel but it's not as good as I had hoped for, and not just because of my stoner inability to follow the plot. In fact, it's great to watch high - loads of Bladerunneresque visuals and a huge production budget. But 300 years in the future people still smoke? Women are raped and killed with impunity (as long as they are re-sleeved - so much for #metoo). I dunno, there are big themes that could be explored but aren't. I believe there will be a second season so, naturally, they're gonna drag things out. I much prefer adaptations from novels as a mini-series, ie, The Handmaid's Tale - one season, tell the story, done & dusted. :2c:

{spoiler}yea lol I watch it vaped every night and am constantly asking my girlfriend what I just missed haha yea for me its the "Envoys" which are confusing are they dissidents or UN or both? yes on your 300 years into the future questions.. another note, kovach paid with scrip or cash in a transaction or two?! they still have paper currency that far ahead?? its a heavy themed show too much going on at once, I'm on ep. 5 and am taking it slow even rewinding a few shows due to all that info! yea next year will continue into season 2 so plenty of rewatching. I love the music its awesome. J. kinnaman is alright, I remember his scrawny thuggish cop character Netflix show he did way back called "the killing"

Roseanne remake. I find it funny and eye opening at the same time.

It's a glimpse into a political mindset that many didn't know existed in huge numbers unless you held that same mindset. If you're someone who watched this show and came away thinking it's all fantasy .... you learned nothing in Nov. 2016.

@lwien yes on the legion music, Jeff Russo has put together some rather interesting covers, last episode were some interesting tunes, I like the Indian version of white stripes very cool, the entire show is awesome. since we are on TV music, Westworld also has an amazing set of tunes woven in the show, I love how they cover some songs which seems to be a trend among the composers for film/tv.

The Expanse.....:rip:.

I guess that means either peace will prevail or all will be destroyed by the end of this season. Not sure where else things can go. Nor what a season 4 would look like given the two options. I’d love to see someone pick up the series though. It’s a visually spectacular show with a hook (or two or three).

What happened to the belters? That facet of the story was my favorite and it seems not to have been picked up on yet this season. Maybe I have to go back and re-watch the end of season 2.

The news comes 10 days after Syfy canceled the space drama after three seasons.

Just finished watching episode 7. I liked it a lot. It was, from my perspective, a good bit out of character all things considered. Almost like they were putting it out there that the show could go in any which way direction, which it can. Maybe throwing out bait for potential bidders. I’m thrilled to see Amazon now has it. And looking forward to the finale. Go Belters.

I think many people know this mindset exists in this day and age, and for those that didn't, well, I think they do now thanks to Rosie and her "ambien-induced" tweets.

The real key will be which of Roseanne's personalities tweeted.

The one who uses a three level deep racist meme against an obviously black woman who held the seat of influence for 8 years:

Or the one who wants to behead bankers:
Roseanne+Barr+occupy+wall+street

Good thing she didn't conflate the two. Otherwise, she'd be in real trouble.

But, how times change. Racism AND domestic abuse in a joke. (Well, DA. Some theories hold only "those kinds" of people can be racist.):

I hope most who see that show/video and laugh at it, have watched the show before to know those two characters hateful, spiteful, comedic dynamic, or see it as just the comedy of a cranky, old man calling, I believe his sister in law, gorilla faced just to be mean/derogatory towards her good looks or lack thereof(the writers made her appear more frumpy for lack of another word, just for this reason). Now, not saying that kind of humor is everyone's cup of tea, but I think most would agree that generally that is kinda what makes the skit funny. Nasty old junk man, berating(and threatening her with violence, unfortunately, more "accepted" and common at that time in history.) his outspoken, pushy sister in law. Lots of folks can relate with an in-law that they loathe or fight with, or at least see some humor, minus the domestic violence threat.

Where it gets ugly is the unfortunate minority of people that find this funny and ok because they equate a black person with a gorilla, which is what we have seen yet again with Roseanne's tweets. It is not ok in our modern society to think this is funny because, "Hurr, durr, blacks ARE gorillas".

If someone can't understand that they cannot use phrases like, dago, guinea, wop, nigga/er, coon, and all the other racial/ethnic slurs, like their own, and justify it by saying, "What, why can't I use "insert your favorite slur" like they do themselves?", I don't know what to say other than ur a cunt, and you deserve to lose your tv show, get called out in public, etc., whatever consequences may come, I feel not for you, other than sadness for those you caused pain to, and the decent people who may have to deal with you, family, friends, co-workers.

I heard my uncles, when I was little, use some derogatory words amongst themselves(Italians using wop/guinea/dago). I was aware, by common sense/good upbringing, from a young age to know that saying that wasn't acceptable if you were outside our ethnicity. I wasn't taught it was okay to use other groups words for themselves in my vernacular.

Also, this has zero to do with politics...hate is hate, and stupid is stupid.

@OldNewbie -- not directed at you, but to the "only those people can be racist" comment in your post.

I am astonished one can conflate the tweet made with "hate". Talk about defining things down. I hope those who want those who disagree with them to die are also placed in the hating category. No matter if the hatred is based on some superficial characteristic that can be applied to a group or if based on individual characteristics.

I remember my grandfather talking about the "boogies". Boogietown was where they lived. While I never saw him treat another without respect, I was young when he was alive and my memory is not as clear as it used to be. Still, even without hate, the comments from him were racist.

As a young man, I was at my buddy's apartment when a neighbor called out, "BOOGIE, GET IN HERE NOW!" I literally cringed as the child being yelled at was black. Like I believe Foxx was not making a racist joke as much as one about ugly, I also believe Boogie's mom (who was also black) was probably not making a racist comment about her son. However, gorilla/black "jokes" or comparisons were around LONG before Sanford's scripted feud with his TV sister and I find it unlikely either Foxx or Barr were unaware of them when the jokes were made.

Roseanne is filled with hate and anger. She always has been. Many comedians also include a bit of self-loathing with the hate as well. On top of all those issues, she probably has some types of severe mental illness as well. She claims multiple personalities--even though that is unlikely. Still, those that have been close question her mental health. That's been true for a long time. She is a sad person who makes some people laugh and that was enough to make a lot of people money.

I find it hard to believe the reaction to the particular tweet is an example of a straw that broke the camel's back as much as a duckspeak from the Ministry of Truth in order to continue their prolefeed without possibility the bellyfeel is reduced by individuals who crimethink.
