Totally New to Flower and Dry Herb Vaping! What Can I Expect Switching From Oil Cartridges?

Hi everybody! I've been vaping oil cartridges for the last few months as my intro to weed. There's a lot to enjoy about it and initially what I was interested in was the relatively cheap price point for a good quality rig (Yocan Uni Pro babey!!) and how there was little to no clean up process. That's all well and good but I've realized that I like looking into what the actual strain is supposed to do, learning about terpenes and all that fun esoteric weed nerd stuff! The problem with wanting to be a weed nerd and primarily vaping carts is overwhelmingly I'm told that most cartridges -even ones that claim to be live resin- are often times fake and aren't actually the strain they say they are.

So instead of paying upwards of $70 for a gram that's supposed to be just like the real thing, I figured I'd actually try the stuff out from the source! That said, I'm also starting from basically Square One over here. I've never really interacted with flower before and even after looking into what stuff to buy and trying to understand what vaporizing is I'm a little stuck on weird little particulars and logistical stuff. Mainly how much do I put in? How finely do I grind an herb up to pack it in? How many drags can I take from what I pack in? Can the same substance stay in the tubing for multiple sessions or do I have to switch it out every time?

Then there's stuff that more pertains to the differences between vaping oils vs vaping dry herb. Mainly I see people take these really long, deep drags off dry herb devices upwards of like, 15-20 second hits and I'm more used to taking smaller puffs from my oil pen like, 5-7 seconds tops. Is that how you're supposed to smoke it or do the review channels just like to play up how thick the clouds are?

I bought an Xmax v3 Pro after seeing a lot of reviews and people recommending it on the Vaporents subreddit as a good beginner's vape so I'd love to see anybody with specific experience with that pen but any experience you have to share is welcomed! Thanks for reading!

welcome to FC! rather than writing a 85 page manifesto about vaping and all the different vapes lets keep things simple and stick to the V3 ;) good choice by the way. the first thing I would do is get a pipe screen and cut it to size to fit in the bottom of the oven, this will keep fine particles out of the heater, a particular problem if you use fine grind (which I will go more int detail about later). hit size all depends mostly on the user and what they are trying to achieve, quick hard session to get blasted off quick or a slower pace with lots of different temperate settings throughout the session. one of the first things you will notice dry herb vaping vs carts is flower can be harsher. there are things you can do to mitigate how harsh like sticking to lower temps, smaller hits, temp stepping ext. however you will find effects differ in intensity depending on temps used, you will have to discover what effects you are seeking. things like grind consistency also differ vape to vape, some are more versatile and it does not matter what you use as much others preform best with one type. hand torn or course grind typically vape slower and have better flavour , fine grind vapes more quickly and produces bigger clouds faster. with my V3 I like my brilliant cut grinders fine plate which produces small pieces not dust, that would be to fine for the V3. I fill the V3 chamber from a small bottle, tapping the bottle like ashing off a j to get a stream of herb flowing into the oven chamber, I fill to full and tap the bottom of the vape to a table to settle the herb in the chamber , I do not tamp to compress, I want it fluffy and soft, works best for convection devices like the V3. I like to start slow at a lower temp to get all of the best flavour, temp stepping a bit at a time before cranking it to high to finish off the bowl which after the low temp flavour saving is more bland but the effects are what I'm looking for. things like dose size vary person to person about what is suitable. I'm a micro doser so the V3 is actually a large bowl for me, its twice what I use in other vapes as my regular dose. I can get 2 sessions out of the V3 if I'm in the mood for that but typically I like to finish my bowls in one go as flavour does not last long, only a few hits and the rest of the bowl is blander, I don't see the appeal of returning to a bland bowl later. hopefully you find some of this info useful to get you started:D

Yeah but another thing, a lot of the cartridges are not full spectrum, live resin or distillate, it's not quite the same, but if you can get something like Blue River Rosin cartridges, those are supposed to be very very good... I wouldn't get paranoid about all cartridges, just make sure you're getting reputable brands!

However yeah strains for specific effects and such, you have to take all of that with a grain of salt, every single grow is different, from every different place, and there are so many made up strain names, you can look up stuff to get a sense, but again just to get a sense, none of it is 100% true to what you have in our experiencing, you know?

Anyway I think you made the right choice on the starter vape, it is a great option because pure convection on demand is very versatile, you can use it like the pen, except the oil pen uses conduction by the way so you press the button and it is building the vapor and you inhale it, with the pure convection on demand it is your inhale that is going to be creating the vapor, so you will need to take a longer hit to get a more full hit, your breathing hot air through the weed to create the vapor, just think of it like that... Bad dog has you on the tips and I'm sure you've read the thread here so there's plenty there to get you set, don't load too much, don't grind too fine (you want fine grind and tight pack for a pure session conduction vape which this is not) V3 pro is a fun option because it has a full session mode, this does not make it the same as those other vapes, but it is a nice different usage style, more efficient way of doing a session puffing on a bowl, but I think you will probably prefer the on demand usage mode more since it is more like using a cartridge?

Oh and the temperature settings, you really have to play around, I like to start low for the flavor and light effects, you can still get some visible vapor depending how you load the vape, and I like to step up the temperature every couple hits, to ride the experience, but it is also very fun to start at 380 instead of 345, or 360 right in the middle, everything in between, I like to do as much as I can below 400 for the flavor, but I am off and going above it to finish off, there's a lot of versatility with this unit, so read up, be patient and enjoy the ride!

Oh and welcome to FC!!

Honestly, I just don't trust cartridges.

I prefer flower & concentrate from the guy who I have been purchasing from for the past few years who let's me know whenever he gets some special flower or rosin in and gives me a good price on.

Just my preference.

Yeah that's great if you have that, dispensaries are really nice for the convenience, but you can't trust anything unless you actually know where it's coming from, need to grow my own!

Welcome...

I'm new-ish to vaping but have learned a lot in the past few months. I've smoked cannabis since I was a kid; that was a long time ago. What I can say is that after four or five months, I will never smoke again. I tried smoking some herb through my bong a few days ago, but couldn't get it down. I never liked smoking, I never liked the smell of smoked cannabis, but vaping I don't mind. I have come to enjoy the tastes and flavours in my vape.

Do you know how and when you will be vaping? This will affect a choice in a vape.

The XMax V3 Pro is a good vape. Many of us here have it, each with their own opinions. For me, I like the unit, but I get more psychoactive effects from my (original) XMax Starry v3. Reading through these forums, you will find lots of advice and information.

The big difference for me has been the psychoactive effects. Vaping, I get a more invigorating feeling, and far less couch-lock. I've learned to turn down the temperature on my vape, savour the taste, and respect the ritual. For me cannabis is medical as much as recreational. That said, there is need for balance. Some smaller differences are better taste, dry herb vaping allows a person to really taste the flavours in the herb, and some herb is quite delicious. There is far less smell, it is efficient is one uses their AVB, and I find that one gram of herb can be stretched a long way.

For me, the psychoactive effects are different. They don't last as long, and they aren't as intense, but it works for me. I vape many times a day. It is kind of like drinking coffee or smoking a cigarette. It is a ritual, and it provides medicinal effects. The level of those effects can be increased by vaping at a higher temperature, and vice versa. It works for me.

The other thing that is worth knowing about is VAS or Vape Acquistion Syndrome. It seems that buying one is like eating the proverbial peanut; try buying just one.

Have you heard about the boom on Mizar 5?
All I want to say is that as someone who finds the whole fact that we are vaporizing THC oil out of a device that can sit in your palm to be some real sci-fi shit, I love the fact you did carts before flower. It's a brave new world!

Bad Dog

Yeah I pissed on the rug...... so what
since you are new to flower I thought I'd give you some more information. the humidity of the buds can change how your herb vapes, bud that is too moist will not vape well and there is the possibility of it going moldy, dry as a bone herb will vape faster but can be harsher, many people store their bud with hydration packs like 62% humidity, Boveda or Integra Boost, there is some discussion about which is better? some people think the boveda affect flavour while integra doesn't, I've never had problems with either. personally I find properly humidified bud to be more pleasant to vape both how the hit feels and and flavour, thc is not water soluble but maybe terpines are????? so I do think some humidity is good. grinding can also be affected by humidity, dry bud can more readily break down into smaller pieces more easily because it is brittle, hydrated bud more rips into pieces and for me is more consistent in size. your grinder also plays a large role in the consistency and varies grinder to grinder some being better than others but the structure of the buds also comes into play depending on the size of the calyx's (the small green ovals with brown hairs coming out of them that make up the bud) bud with small calyx's will more readily break down into a finer grind than large ones in the same grinder.

should you find yourself wanting the effects of higher temperate vaping but are having trouble with irritation I do recommend getting the wpa (water pipe adapter) and a bong of some sort to condition the vapour. vaping through water does rob some of the flavour but is much smoother. j hooks are another option for cooling the vapour but keeping it dry and with good flavour.

It's a bit of both – reviewers will try to showcase the maximum output of a device so us viewers can calculate its hit power and compare it to other devices, the size of a cloud is taken as a parameter for its power here. Many reviewers do have a tolerance somewhere between Mars and Jupiter too. It is true that some devices expect a long draw and most devices do not allow short joint like (or cart like? I never really tried them) puffs, however, there are lots of options that will let you find a comfortable way of hitting a vaporizer without getting out of breath and faint in the middle of a session, either by the design of the device itself or by various settings or set ups. The world of vaporizing is *big*. Welcome. :-)

I’m a big fan of carts myself. But you’re right. I also don’t trust most carts that say “Live Resin”.

Many times that just means distillate, with its bland cannabinoid profile, flavored by “live” terpenes. You can find brands that use true, full spectrum live resin, but it takes research. You can’t trust packaging or dispensary employees.

I personally prefer hash rosin carts. No distillate and the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terps. I find them pretty comparable to a flower high.

I also like vaping flower. IMO, it tastes very good in the right vape. You’re getting the fullest spectrum available. And if you ever decide to try carts again or dabable concentrates, you’ll have a good baseline to judge them by.

Thanks so much everybody for the kind words! From what I've seen so far this is a far more welcoming community than other places I've been to. That said, I think part of it may be that I got stuff that most people agree is good whereas with oil cartridges it seems like every brand there's at least somebody that will say "omg that's fake as hell, I can't believe you like That". I'm really thankful that I haven't encountered that kind of hostility here! :D

I'm still waiting on my Xmax to get here and I feel like an absolute fool because it turns out I ordered a water pipe attachment for the Xmax STARRY and not the V3 Pro so I don't think I can use it sadly 😥

The main thing I'm hesitant about now is I'm afraid I may have fucked myself in terms of what to expect. I'm used to oils and distillates which are like, in the high 80's to like, 95% THC and the actual flower is MUCH lower! I'm afraid I'm gonna vape actual flower a bit and go "damn this ain't shit" because it's not blasting me off to space the way some random distillate cart with 98% THC and 0% actual flower would. That said, I want to experience the effects of what different strains are meant to do instead of just a general "high" feeling which I thiiink is what higher THC levels do. Am I right or am I completely off base here?

Yeah don't focus too much on the percentage, a lot of herbs today have very high levels above 25%, and there's a difference because you're going to get a full spectrum experience instead of more like just the THC from the distillate carts even though they're in the 90%... It's a process!

I haven't tried many concentrates (and the ones I tried were CBD), but that percentage number in both cases doesn't say how much THC will be delivered into your system – that still depends on you, how much flower or concentrate you load, how many hits you take etc.

Here's a small dialogue bit from another thread that I find helpful in this context:

Every time we adulterate the basic plant in order to achieve
a stronger drug, we make it more toxic.
History:
opium- god's medicine; heroin the cure to opiate addiction
coca leaf- life extension; cocaine - heart attacks
Stay with the plant and you cannot go wrong. IMHO

I agree with your premise but want to point out that THC percentage is a measurement of weight. The only reason "concentrates" test at a higher THC percentage is because the leafy green unvaporizable plant material has already been removed prior to lab testing.

When you vaporize dry herb you still expose your body to the same concentrated THC oils as other cannabis concentrates. The pile of AVB leftover after a flower session confirms that a concentration process has indeed occurred. The only way to avoid concentrating would be to consume the flower in its entirety - that's combustion.

Yeah I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
I don’t find the perceived potency to be strongly correlated to the THC percentages. Some of the strongest oils I’ve had were under 60%. Less THC leaves room for other cool molecules which could add to the experience 🐛🐛

Every person is different. For me the 'high' from vaping is different. That, however, is me; others say it feels about the same. Don't take this as an immediate negative.

I smoked cannabis for more than 40 years; I smoked because it was the only thing I knew. I own my own house, but it is a townhouse. The neighbours were complaining of the smell, so I had to find an alternative. I tried shatter, but didn't like it. With shatter, I can make my head spin, but the feeling only lasts a minute or two; I don't get any value.

Reading about dry herb vaping, I gambled $50 and bought a Yocan Vane; it is not the greatest, but the Vane gave better psychoactive effects than shatter. I did some research and bought an Arizer Solo II. From there I went crazy, buying more toys. Every vape, like every person, is different.

What I find with the psychoactive effects of vaping, is that they are more subtle, and energizing. I can vape all day, I mean pretty much non-stop, the same way someone sips on a coffee or smokes cigarettes. There is NO couchlock for me. If I enjoy a sativa with breakfast, it gives me the energy and motivation to start my day. I then switch to a hybrid, and end the afternoon with an indica. Even if I feel intoxicated, within 45-60 minutes, I can be very focused. For me the feelings don't last as long, they are less intense, but for me, they are more helpful in dealing with anxiety and PTSD.

The thing is this, and you will see me saying this everywhere, moderation and common sense are critical if using cannabis for medical reasons. Talk to a doctor, and don't chase the dragon.

For me, and again, everyone is different, the big risk is recreation use of cannabis getting in the way of actually using it for medical purposes. It is very easy to blur the line. After I discovered vaping, I went a bit overboard chasing the dragon. I was vaping every day non-stop, I was eating my AVB in capsules, and I ended up completely messed up. I forgot about "moderation and common sense"; I ended up taking a two week T-Break to clear my system. Frankly even now, I wonder if I should take another T-Break?

Making vaping a ritual. There is power in ritual. Get enjoyment from turning on the vape, to packing, to vaping, to cleaning. I use ritual to help manage stress and anxiety. Ritual has no side-effects, other than focusing the mind on the ritual.

I am trying to turn the temperature down on my vape, focusing more on the ritual, and saving my AVB for some later time. Because the temperature is low, there will be lots of goodness left in the AVB.

It is a journey. Sometimes I get off track and start chasing dragon, instead of dealing with my stress. As long as one has the awareness to correct course when off track, it is not a bad place to be.

Hey Robert: As so many have been through a similar plight, it took a year to finally conclude a system that met my criteria, includes overriding the HOA. I now freely use my WS Log and Old Head Hot Rod with all blinds pulled up or down. This of course had forced HOA into a threatening frenzy.

I took their threat to a law assistant and learned that these rotten HOA people had little chance subject to circumstances. A couple factors had been being in a legal canna State and having an on-going Doctors medical approval. Unfortunately for the HOA, “I’m Still Alive And Well”. For now, these poop heads have stopped crossing my path.

In the beginning the switchover had been pretty costly cause I didn’t now squat about vaping. My wasted dollars in order went to an elite/pax3/crafty+/solo2/ArGo/ONE and lots of DVs, couple heaters, glass and compatibles alike. Solo2 and Crafty will be my side step keepers. However I do not see using them much anymore.

Halfway through this process I had given the outdoor storage room a shot attempting to work out a compromise. But the HOA got high on their horse and that’s where the rubber had hit the road.

Suggested bottom line: WoodScents pkg for the daytime. Crafty+ for out and about only. The heavy hitting Old Head Hot Rod for evenings.

Wishing you success.

Glad to know I'm not the only one dealing with petty tyrants on a HOA board. This old lady had the balls to say she wants this to be a "drug free community" and wanted to put it on a ballot. I told her I'd sue before the ink was dry on those ballots. I never had problems with landlords. Now that I own my own home I gotta deal with this shit? Fuck off.

A "drug free community" in Florida, the pill mill capitol of the world, is really rich. I'd bet my bottom dollar this lady is on a potent pharmaceutical blend. I did meet some nice, older neighbors after the meeting who thanked me. Apparently there's a whole bunch of medical marijuana patients in my neighborhood.

Our last house was in a hoa, and I grew weed in the garage, lol. Lucky for me I owned wooded lots on each side of me and there was a 50ft greenbelt behind us. (Where a cop lived, lol)

Now I'm on 25 acres and can't see another house from mine. Much better.

Thankfully HOAs don't really exist in the UK, at least not too the same extent as they do in North America. My uncle lived in BC, in a very nice hillside development overlooking Vancouver, an absolutely stunning setting. He died a few years ago and the immediate family congregated at his house. We were organising his send off and had lots of visitors coming and going whilst making arrangements and having visitors give us thier condolences. One particular day, the day before the funeral, the house was particularly busy with last minute organising. This was the moment the HOA knocked on the door to complain about cars parked on the street. They were well out of everyone's way but that wasn't good enough. I swear that's the closest I've ever come to committing an assault.

Lets see! Oil to flower; well you get closer to the earth.
You negate an entire capitalist supply chain and possibly questionable claims.
You have greater assurance that you are not getting gouged or oregano or perejil.
You do lose convenience but that is balanced by all the vapes you gain.
You can have one for oregano, one for perejil, one for mizuna....
You can grow your own.

It Got here everybody!! I just tried a bit of Zookies and it is great!! I'm almost certain there's stuff I got wrong this first time since I'm just learning the ins and outs of the v3 and I bet just fiddling around with it for a bit, I bet I'd burned a good amount of stuff before I figured out a good way to smoke it but for what it's worth I'm a big fan!

Honestly the one thing I was underwhelmed by was the hit to the lungs. People were telling me it would feel harsher but honestly it didn't! But I also wasn't great at doing drags either the first few times. I've noticed that you get the best clouds if you take a hit while the thing is heating up in session mode. That said, I don't quite get On Demand mode yet and I've noticed if I leave it on demand for more than like, 5-10 minutes consecutively at the same temperature idling it eventually just gets no vapor at all and yet the device is still hot? Many mysteries abound this device haha!

That said, I think I triggered at least 2 "session" timers and at least one on demand burn too and once I took the weed out it was brown so my comments on the flavor are a little suspect but for what it's worth I looked up the Leafly strain and it tasted remarkably similar!

I also took it out and packed in another lil grinder bit in! I tried to hit it for a session too to compare the AVB so in terms of ingestion I thiiink I overdid it a bit haha! Honestly though I think the main takeaway is that this is way more user friendly and intuitive than I thought it would be and I'm certainly ready to be a part of this community!

I also get what you all mean by saying you can't get just ONE Vaporizer too haha! The water pipe attachment I got was for the Xmax Starry so I'm lowkey like "hey how much for one of those?? :hmm:" because I bet a rip from this in a water piece would be great!!

Thanks again everybody for being so welcoming and oddly wholesome too! I'm glad to share this corner of the internet with y'all! :D

FURTHER QUESTIONS THOUGH!!

How much do you Vape in a session?
The v3 specifically has the session timer on a 6 minute timer or a 4 minute timer. How many drags do you take in that allotted time? Do you hold the button down every time you take a hit or is that only for on demand mode? Is there a moment where you achieve peak vapor? Help me find the golden ratio!!
