My adapters and stand from @ScruffyWoofers arrived! Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship and functionality. I highly recommend his work.

I know someone was asking about how the tornado plus the adapter would work with a tswooden poker. It's fantastic! The adapter is quite snug in the poker, you might need moderate effort to get it back out, but the combo is perfect together.

That looks absolutely great together! How's hot does it all get when in use?

Unfortunate news, the poker (coffee wood) couldn't handle the heat. After X2 uses with the inductor it developed a crack near the mouth piece. To have tried and failed is better to have never tried at at all. 😌
Ouch. Thank for taking one for the team.

Would have thought it would get more heat at bowl side vs MP.

Even with this news I’m still 50/50 to try the poker when my adapters arrive lol.

John mentions the reason the Tornado isn't compatible with Anvil stems at about 33:20. Very interesting!
I thought the whole interview was interesting, on his company, its developments, its objectives, and on the Tornado of course (and the Forge). there's a lot of work behind the scenes, as they say, and we end up with some very high-performance devices, whether it's the Anvil or now the Tornado.

For those who don’t want to waste your time to hear this one response, it essentially boils down to “The Tornado is so unique and special I had to design it this way.”

Because a master engineer couldn’t possibly work out the math to make his own products compatible. And it’s not like these are totally different ends of the spectrum, we are talking about bare minimum effort for internal consistency.

It’s B as in B, S as in S.

The Tornado is still a great device, despite its creators clear misgivings.

His explanation sounded perfectly reasonably plausible to me.

What explanation? What physical reason is there he could not make it the same size?

None, he is either not the engineer he purports to be, is completely inept at product design, or willfully soaking his customers for extra dough.

If that’s the kind of operation you like to send your excess cash to, it’s your cash not mine. But I’ve got some oceanfront property in Arizona if you have any interest.

ETA: MadHeaters has made many variations to his core product line. All of them beautifully engineered, all of them cross compatible. An engineer worth his salt would design it, the lack of effort speaks volumes for itself.

Yeah, I'm of this opinion too.

I watched it last night with closed captioning on to try and make out what he was saying but his "explanation" makes no real sense. He didn't even really complete a sentence.

I vaguely remember him saying something about having to make holes to vent the molten copper as it's poured, and putting some stainless down there at the bottom.... but then he just trails off and does some handwaving, claiming it had to be shorter than the original. My BS detector started going off. Oh well. 🤷‍♂️

Do you not understand it or are you trying to convey that what he said is not a valid explanation?

And all of them practically the same.

It's going to be really funny when the Tornado stem just looks like an Anvil stem but with the airflow bits chopped off.
Honestly, I love the Anvil stem and I just recently ordered one to chop it off for the Tornado. I couldn’t care less for the reason why it doesn’t fit off the bat, I‘m just grateful for these brilliant devices to exist.

I clearly don’t understand, please tell me the engineering obstacle that was insurmountable to achieving stem commonality.

Longtime listener, first time caller, I’ll hang up and listen for your answer.

ETA: thank you for confirming that MH has used engineering to make “all of them practically the same.” That is called standardization, it’s a fairly basic element of proper engineering; maybe JV went to a different school of engineering? Maybe you don’t understand what product standardization is?

How would you have done it?

That might be a touchy one for sure. If it's not visibly obvious how the new stem is different besides closing that little gap and why that decision was made...

My first Vestratto purchase was the Tornado so I've got no Anvil stems to possibly recycle but I can see why this decision might irritate existing owners. Maybe John was just terrible with his first public explanation and things will get cleared up. Either way, I've ordered Scruffy's adapters so I'm good.

The way john seems to put it in the video, he sees the Anvil and Tornado as two separate products, and he plans to manufacture both and sell them both at the same time. But it just seems unnecessary to me since they share realistically the same style of connection, so it's definitely a company focused decision rather than consumer / patient focused.

Seems that way. Unless the tech at the bottom of the Tornado absolutely required it to be a few millimeters different than what's compatible with the Anvil stem. Also, absolutely no thought at all was given to a workaround? Dubious.

The tip portion of the Tornado TED is different from the Anvil, yes, but stems are ubiquitous and should be standardized. Both tips run at around the same temps and don't differ wildly in vapor production that would require different cooling stems as far as I can see. I fail to see (or John failed to adequately explain) how the section of the tip that mates with a stem should contain tricky engineering.

I do remember him saying something about having already placed an order to some factory for a run, and not wanting to wait another month for a later run that would delay the product release? It was late when I watched and I admit I was tired.
