I took my original LL resistance measurements with a reasonably nice multimeter and made sure to subtract lead resistance. This morning I measured the voltage drop, and a fresh 4.20V drops to 3.88V under load- so the resistance of my core is probably less than one ohm. This means the battery must provide around 5.5amps, not 3.5 amps. Sorry for the confusion!
I know the D1 requires a custom or hobby charger to get the most out of it, and I don't have access to either. If somebody out there already has a fancy charger and a spare LL core, it may be a worthwhile experiment. New 18650s are coming out all the time, I wouldn't be surprised to see capacities double in the next year or two.
