With an initial cruise to soak some heat into the metal I get a fuller first hit and retain flavour throughout the bowl. I think I'm getting better flavour this way as it stops me hitting it too early and stripping the flavour out before it releases all the other wholesome goodness out of the bowl.

One cruise is usually enough - unless I drop the ball and let it go cold again.
In which case I'll fire it and watch the temp onscreen for a few seconds to watch it come back up to where we want it and carry on.

And what do you do for subsequent hits? I believe @AJS preheats for 10 sec on the initial hit & subsequent hits are 1 to 2 sec. This is what I've been doing.
Sometimes I'll put it on a lower temp and hop into cruise mode as I load the bowl, sometimes it'll be 20-30 seconds. Then I will click it off then back on and just do a short preheat and rip. I've left cruise mode running for quite a while at times.

Recently though I've just been doing wattage mode with a standard 5 second preheat or so, I don't really pay attention anymore.

Wow some long preheats. Mines almost the opposite. I use 60watts preheat till hit 350 then drops down to 50watts till hits 380. Hits temperature quick Normally starting my draw at 3-4 seconds from cold or almost instantly once warmed up.

If your heating up for 30 seconds then use cruise. Really sounds like your using more conduction instead of convection to heat the material? Personally rather use splinter as a convection vaporizer.

If going warmup that long I feel might as well use something like my Mighty. With splinter i want on demand instant type hit over a session vaporizer.

Really happy that other found other ways to enjoy the device. Just surprised sometimes how different there methods are than mine.

Listen everyone, Ryan just put up published a IG stream. I tuned in late, but it was chock full of informative stuff specifically in regards to glass stems so I encourage you to watch it. I have to watch it again for the 1st 1/2 that I missed.

OK, I'm now confused. Just went to watch it & Ryan took it down. ??? Anyway, I'll keep checking.
It seems to be there now @Summer.

Does @RastaBuddhaTao know about "highlights"? https://help.instagram.com/1729008150678239

VAS got me today. Wanted a Z but no dice. Got a regular Splinter from Vapefiend. Will it be ok on an iStick Pico? Do these earlier ones have a regular sized joint or is it the odd one? Cheers ☺

Congrats Gweilo! You're gonna love it! And when you finally do have access to the Z, I bet you're gonna get that one, too. :brow: It's contagious.

Read this and successive posts for your Pico ?:

Do a thread search for iStick Pico & you'll get related posts to read.

Enjoy, & provide feedback when you know what you think of it.

Thank you Summer. You are right I think. Just when you have all the vapes you want there always seems to be one more. :D:leaf:

No, that's not what I meant -- wasn't even thinking it. See, after securing the Z, my appetite is truly squelched because at this stage of my life, I realize I'm only person who smokes (yes, that's what I call it regardless of mode of delivery -- always will) every weekend &, if able to, 1 or 2 week nights, so like how many vapes do I need for my low usage level. Now if you're young or an afficionado(sp.), then I can understand the desire to try out a bunch of different ones & having a large collection.

Edited to Add: Through my limited experience, reading through FC threads & knowing my personal style, I took the time & did the research in order to jump to the meat of my heart's desire in the vape realm.

Don't forget that feedback. Have a good weekend.

I'm with @Summer here. My needs are completely fulfilled. Hoarding vapes is just another face of my addict personality I guess... I got more than enough already. Yet somehow I keep hoping to find that elusive Holy Grail, the perfect vape, while knowing that it doesn't exist.

So I keep nitpicking on minute details that could be improved, where quite honestly even cheap Chinese vapes these days do the job adequately.

I wasn't sure if the term addictive personality was appropriate. Unless my personality is addictive to others heh (yeah yeah I'm a supa-star! heh) Whereas I have no problem calling me an addict.

You gotta acknowledge your weaknesses if you want to cope with them.

Synopsis of 3 or 4 of Ryan's latest IG streams:

In 1 stream he talked about his professional career & hates when a business makes decisions based on politics rather than just doing the next right thing business-wise. Then talked about learning to make glass. For the duration of another stream, he illustrated his new-found skills of annealing glass & making the XL8r condensation holes. A member gifted him a flare device (glasses?) so he can see stress cracks.

One tip is: never put your Splinter onto your upside-down stem at an angle as that puts all the weight on the glass & can cause it to crack, especially those of us who have China glass. Rather, put the the Splinter onto the upside-down stem in a straight vertical line.

I think he said ceramic capabilities was another area he's interested.

3 days ago I asked if a 16mm coil would work with the XL8r stem so wouldn't have to use butane torch. As I assume he doesn't have a coil, he improvised by taking an uncoiled Splinter mesh strip & spiraled it around the stem like a candy cane &, then, connected the battery leads to each end & turned it up to 100W until it heats up thoroughly then he turned it down to around 79 & took a hit. Still not hot enough so back & forth between wattages until it was truly hot & producing vapor at a lower temp. His power supply was running > 100W/8amp/12watts, but would be hard-pressed at 10amps. If that were the case he would just get a power supply box.

$150,000 for wood milling machine or $70/hr for US outsourcing. Talked about the math ($) in having to use a middleman retailer to stay viable. Some type of tooling in US is $3 - $4000. And his business doesn't generate enough units to meet mfr thresholds for mfr'ing. So he has to go the way of China to be viable.

Every component cost 5x more if made in US than China. $415 vs $89 for an all inclusive vape.

Splinter China made; probably will maintain Splinter Z in US.

Someone asked about the difference between the Stempod & Splinter.

SP is rebuildable e-cig based vaporizer. Has smaller surface area heater so have to be at much higher temp. so as to mix highly heated air with room temp air.

Splinter is a convection vaporizer, "has a high surface area & has the ability to deliver full-flavored saturated air -- to come up to temp quickly & fully vaporize the entire load. Good heat transfer efficacy so that the air if fully saturated when it enters air chamber."

Ryan feels his heater is bulletproof as he had a friend run a lb. & 1/2 through a Milaana heater & then break the glass & check the heater which showed no noticeable degradation.

Splinter will soon have a proprietary, patent-pending element that will further differentiate it, but he didn't say what.

SP is for those who like to tinker w/ their vapes & Splinter is for those who just like to set it & forget it.

Thanks for new info! All the irritations and open questions about RBT devices would be much more without your scouting at all sources @Summer.
Perhaps you should talk to Ryan during a live stream about making a big FAQ section at his site to bring more clarification regarding the most important info?

Yep, would be no luxury. All the open questions about settings, use and technical changes again and again regarding RBT devices and looking for answers at a handful of potential sources all the time are getting more and more on nerve for (potential) customers I believe.
Thank you very much for your investigations the more! Don't want to know how much time you've spent on it up to now.
Most people only want to have a functional device with a manual and not to make a hobby of searching for basic info about if you aren't a fan-boy with a lot of time.

Splinter on my absolute behemoth of a 5200mah dna200 mod 'the fog bastard'. One load takes maybe 1 or 2% at most battery power. Not pocketable, but then i probably won't be taking my Splinter out of the house.

Only really had a couple plays with it, but found the 165 tcr to work well. 50w with a slightely higher pre heat punch, nice even avb and easy as anything to use. Practically no technique to speak of.

All round, great vape!

I just got my new Wismec and the Splinter worked great for a few times and now it doesn't work at all and just says, "Atomizer Low".

What does that mean"

Try your splinter on your old mod and try your stempod on the wismec to isolate the source of the problem, it could be either really. I had a brand new mod started giving me "check atomizer" signs after having it a day and it was replaced immediately. I had a splinter fall apart in 3 weeks and that also made my mod flash "no atomizer".

The Splinter went back on my ELeaf and worked fine. Then, I put it back on the Wismec and it would only work in Wattage mode. Then, it went back to working in TCR mode (on the Wismec) for a few hits and now it is saying, "Atomizer Low" again. Seems to work OK in Wattage mode?

I hope I have a happy ending, here. I love the Splinter but I go through 2 of the 5300 mAh Eleaf batteries in a day. I am hoping this Wismec can take an entire day without charging. It took 8 hours to charge it yesterday when I got it. LOL

Also, I notice the manual said it was better to use an external charger than to charge the batteries in the Wismec.

Should I get an external charger?

Be sure the 510 adapter is screwed securely into the Splinter's base. *Do not overtighten.

I have little girly hands vs meat hooks, so I am usually pretty 'soft' on over-tightening things. Nothing is wobbly or loose.

Right now, it's working again on TCR mode. In a few hits it will say Atomizer Low again.

Thanks for the help, gang.

EDIT: I have the TCR at 169 and the temp at 330F, the same as my Eleaf. The numbers wouldn't be different because one is a 2 battery and one is a 4 battery mod, would it?
