Cruise mode is just TC mode with the trigger always on for a set amount of time. So when you are not drawing and the element is at the set temperature, the power drops to practically nothing (a couple of Watts maybe?) It maintains the heater without drawing much current. But then heat conducts through the glass, wood and SS base etc... which can become problematic over a long period.
When you draw the TC algo kicks in and the power consumption rises. Overall it's quite efficient and actually it's a good idea. It's just that the Splinter was not really designed with this operation mode in mind.
