The Picture Discussion thread

I've sometimes been frustrated by the rule in the Picture Thread that requires a picture to make a post. Sometimes a picture provokes a thought or a question that I'd like to pursue.

Back in the days before the web, USENET was a popular way to post pictures. In order not to clog up the picture-posting newsgroup, they often came in pairs: one for the pics, and another for discussions—hence this thread.

I suggest that when you want to comment on something, you use the +Quote button and then use the Insert Quotes button here so that we can tell which picture you're discussing.
You can also use Reply in the picture thread and then cut&paste the quote here although that's more awkward. That's not a rule, but if you don't do something like that it will start to get confusing. I do ask that you make your comment something more substantial than "Cool pic!" because that's what the Like button is for.

It's interesting that the last couple of photos of the Milky Way have featured meteor trails. They reminded me of my own Milky Way shot:

Of course it isn't as sharp as those other beautiful shots, but that's because I took this using a Canon G12 propped on the dashboard of our car and a 64 second exposure. We were spending the night atop Mount Haleakala (el. 3055 m or 10,023 ft). I might as well include the sunrise picture I got as we drove down the mountain:

i have some of crappiest pictures on the planet of the moon at night, however they are the only pictures of the moon that truly take me back to that memorable night.

It is so weird in here, partly because we are not supposed to talk about rules on this forum, and partly because it is just redundant....

I would love to be able to ask questions and discuss the pictures in the picture thread, but carrying on in two separate threads, cutting and pasting, moving multi-quotes from thread to thread (etc.) only creates more complexity and hassle for the user- me.

First of all, we do allow discussion of the rules. We have a whole sub-forum for that. We don't allow discussion of moderator decisions. Please note the difference. The rule against discussions about moderator decisions exists because without it, we would not be able to keep the threads readable. You can challenge a moderator decision in a PM. Lots of you have.

Second, I support the pics-only rule. For one thing, it gets rid of "Cool pic!" comments. It makes the thread more manageable for staff. This makes more work for the user, but allowing comments makes more work for us. Using a second thread means only a motivated person will do it, but allowing comments in the thread invites trivial distractions that we then have to clean up.

Look at it this way. Before, you couldn't make comments, now you can.

Very inorganic, but a creative way to get comments out of the Picture Thread.

I don't mind the comments where they are, but I understand it from the moderating/management perspective. Life contains many mysteries.

Truthfully, the thing that gets me about that thread, it's full of too many big pics that take serious time to load, even of my laptop (and let's not talk about phone viewing). What would make me LOVE THE MODS FOREVER is having a way to view the site with height-and-width controlled images, at a max resolution of say 800x600. Mobile FC http://m.fuckcombustion.com PLEASE!!!

The one thing I'm sure of, is that is a photoshop. The reason I say that, is because to get a picture of stars to show that brightly, the shot needs a long exposure on a steady tripod. Something unlikely to be found in an inflatable raft.

I did find this exif data on the photo:

Think of it this way: you didn't have to read any comments before and you still don't. Pretend that this thread doesn't exist and you're exactly where you were.

I think you meant the pic @Rizzalso posted, not mine, which you included in your quote. Mine has been through Photoshop but only to remove the magenta shift caused by CHDK's long exposure algorithm.

Yours is exactly the kind of comment that I've wanted to make a few times. I often do the same thing you did: examine the EXIF data for clues. A lot of the more spectacular images that get posted have been overshopped IMO.

Yes you're right. @pakalolo , might you fix the photo snafu since the edit window is closed? I did mean the one @Rizzalso posted, just had some bad copypasta. But I'm glad it happened because I just learned something about magenta shift.

I must admit to being one of those nerdy 'shop sleuths, who's not above zooming to the pixel level. Annoying, huh? Digital effects in print and film...such a mixed bag. When used tastefully...ah the things that can come to life! But I wonder about the effect on society, when reality and fiction get so deeply intertwined in tired memes that clog facebook.

I have heard that the sharply cold nights aren't happening, so the colors aren't as vibrant. How are you seeing it?

I don't know what window they're looking out of. The Maple trees are absolutely fluorescent against the greens that are still there. I just got back from town and the colors were amazing. And as to cold nights? I had a fire in the fireplace last night.... it got down to 40.

Not to be a spoilsport or anything, but that shopping cart is a nudge away from dumping that sweet young lady on her keester. The centre of gravity is right around her hips, so it's high and behind the cart. You'd be surprised how little the front wheels have to lift to tip the cart backwards. Not that I have any experience with such things of course, I just have an engineer's mind when it comes to these things.
