Are we all still on schedule for the 28th? @Dan Morrison Not that I’m bothered I can wait for this beautiful wood art vaporiser. Just wanted an idea on how things were progressing.

The anticipation for this vaporizer is strong, but at the same time it's very zen around here...
I remember when the okin was first released it was fine-tuned, right out of the gate
:hmm: Could that success be duplicated with nomad, the more ambitious project?

No matter what I'm seriously looking forward to this one! :whip:

Thanks man!

On the topic of "fine-tuned"... I've got some notes about that.

I've still been making many improvements to the design as I go.. striving to get everything perfected for the first batch.

This has resulted in scraping some parts and starting over, but I know that the end results will be so much better!

Most of my changes have been to the raw material choices. Here's what I've ended up using:

Lead free bronze for all external metal parts. My original choice ended up too yellow toned...and then phosphor bronze was too rosey and clashed with the warm toned woods. The 90% copper bronze I landed on was the perfect in between, a warm golden colour, with the best electrical conductivity of the three.

If you google bronze watches, you'll see a great many examples of the natural patina that develops on a bronze piece.

For the bridge connector between the Heater Module and battery, I went with 101 oxygen free copper, in a spring temper. Pretty much the best electrical conductivity you can get in copper.

The heater modules themselves are 316 SS. Most design changes were made to these modules, the 316 SS proved to be too difficult for me to do on my machines. I decided to have the shells made on a swiss CNC in the U.S.. I've worked with this shop before, and the end result will be perfect no doubt.

With my prototype, I used a "crimped" edge on the heater module shell to bite into the wooden end cap to retain it without using adhesive. This has held up just fine in use.

BUT, there were too many variables that could cause joint failure I thought... and the appearance of the crimped join was sub-par. It needed to be hand-hammered, and getting consistent results quickly wasn't working out.

I redesigned the part with a press fit dowel pin instead. It looks better, it will hold for a hundred years without worry.

I am not on schedule for delivery at the end of the week. I know this will come as a disappointment. I received word this morning that the new 316 SS heater module shells won't be done till first week of Oct., and then I will need to assemble them.

I'll have a better idea of the exact time-line in a couple days.

I've really tried my best to get these out on time, but man.. I just bit off more than I could chew. So many things I didn't account for.

Tonight I will add more photos to the thread and raise spirits! As these things are coming together...they're just looking so SO damn cool.

I seriously doubt anybody will mind if you take a little bit longer. I myself have no problem waiting for another couple months, honestly just knowing it's coming eventually is good enough for me. If any of the 25 decide they can't wait I'm sure someone will step up.

I always say that I have the best customers. :)

I should have these out in Oct. though. Then I'd like to get another batch out before Christmas! Now that things are more setup, things will move faster. I've been getting some parts made in batches of 200 pieces, so I have enough for this batch, and many more ready to go.

No spirit raising needed at all! I will gladly wait as long as it takes as stated above.

My main hobby is collecting art and have waited for months sometimes years for a commission by certain artists and this will be no different.

But some more photos would be great @Dan Morrison. I love looking at your production photos.

Take as much time as needed.

Yeah, please take all the time you need to get it right.

Regarding the bronze patina, is this a good example of what it will look like?

@squidmark, that's what the watch community calls a "forced" patina. It means they used a process to accelerate the patina process. This can be any number of things, from submersing in mustard, eggs, salt, vinegar, etc...

Forcing a patina is often not as nice as a natural patina. It often comes out more mottled and uneven, like the above photo, and the patina isn't very durable (depending on the process).

A natural patina develops over weeks, months...years, and has a rich, deep, translucent quality. It's also very durable.

Here is an example

The patina will get darker and richer with age, and could develop any number of color tones.

I think the best patina is built up on objects that are constantly handled. This makes the patina more durable, even, finely grained.

This is getting borderline ridiculous, and I mean that as the highest compliment. I've gotten used to seeing posts from Dan where he is spending large amounts of time on things like making buttons and screws, but now he's wandering about the woods cutting down burls to use for the shells!?!

@Dan Morrison - you can take six years to make my vape if you want, as long as I get to see that kind of stuff...the journey is better than getting there when riding with you!

duff

Well worn
Thank you @Dan Morrison.
This answers a lot of questions.

Love the heater/battery latch.
Love how effortless it is to slide into the sleeve base.
Love that your surface is an old Rogers amp (I believe).

I watched closely for any movement of the paper but didn't see it budge. It looked firm when it was empty at the beginning and in use there was no visible depression. I guess I had no idea how thick the paper is and what an incredible fit it is.

It hadn't occurred to me that the stem sits so far into the body and that to load, the collar stays in place. Very cool.

Those hits were fast and substantial. That was very impressive.

Fuck patience.
Hurry up.

@stickstones :) Thanks!

Long Overdue. I'd like to make a more polished one, with audio, and better lighting, but this will do for now.

Here, the Nomad is assembled with a medium/low power Heater Module. A couple hoots are taken. This was from cold, no pre-warm up.

Looks amazing, good clouds coming out of the 'Low/Medium' heat module.

I counted a 4 second pre-heat just before the toke, that's as fast as a GrassHopper! Nice!

Any chance of an AVB pic, I know it's subjective but I'd still like to see one. Also how much did you have in the chamber?

Talking about the chamber, is that a custom glass stem with a glass screen?

Can I add a spare stem/chamber onto my order?

Thanks for the vid

A demo isn't complete without an AVB shot imo, but I was fighting with the legal side of it... maybe I need a third party tester to post for me?

Small load.

Custom stem, but with a metal screen. I like metal screens, better filtration and airflow, cheap to replace. If cut and shaped right, it stays in place really well.

Every order gets a spare stem.

@namasteIII , no need to stir.
