I took out my Solo and Hot Pod for some rotation through the last few days, just to be able to judge the Lotus more objectively...

I think I am keeping the Solo for group gatherings from now on, the Hot Pod as a hand warmer and occasional fast sessions and the Lotus will be my 24/7 driver, indoors, outdoors and everywhere in between! :D

Been looking for a new portable since selling my vg and mflb, a non battery powered portable seems like the way to go since stealth isnt an issue. Pulled the trigger on an el natural cap with jhook, standard pipe and wpa, cant wait to give it a whirl :dog:

Good move mate! With the Lotus you'll get the best of both VG and MFLB and none of the bad stuff! ;)

Hi everybody!
Is there a big difference of taste between the Lotus and a VG classic? :)

Was thinking that exact thing

Im thinking it will taste alot cleaner to be honest, my VG always gave me a distinct aftertaste where as the lotus vapor path seems quite clear

While using my old VG I always had a sore throat afterwards and the aromas and taste are quite affected by the butane and wood in the case of wooden Genies... i haven't tried the glass genie but I'm sure the butane will have it's mark there too...

Genie also had many issues with hot spots for me, too sensitive when using it with a torch (to avoid much butane taste...), needed a lot of attention... It's a great first vape nevertheless, much better than the MFLB imo.

Wow, I love my lotus :) please go on sale so I can buy a black cap!

By the way, bought a new torch for it in a smoke shop. I like the one that came with it, but the flame was hit and miss, and had a hard time with getting clouds sometimes, especially when fuel got low. Plus, it got HOT. My new one is still okay for the pocket if you need to bring it somewhere, but it's definitely no portable. But the flame is so dependable and solid, I'm getting great hits, every time. And flame adjustment is simple...has a dial. Only need to apply the flame for about 7 seconds for a huge cloud...great flavor too.

Btw max, how about a 18mm WPA with a even bigger/wider bowl? For ultimate for home use with many friends. Could see it being in the middle, between current size and volcano size :)

The new model has a separate plate between the hot plate and the diffuser plate (with the holes in it) to prevent radiation heating. On the old model the diffuser plate would turn blue over time due to heat. That doesn't happen on the new model.
The real way to test for radiation heating without convection heating is to load the bowl full and heat the hot plate without inhaling. If there is any radiation heating you'll see a color change to the top of the load, and that would be right below the holes in the diffusion plate.

Any plans to offer a updated diffuser plate/extra plate kit for the old model?

Can you post a pic of the lighter mentioned in your earlier post? I didn't know you could turn the large lighters down to a small flame.
The 18mm WPA wouldn't be hard, but I think a bigger bowl would give uneven heating.

Love my new Lotus! I hit it perfectly the first time. If you are an experienced vaporist, this is a very intuitive vape. I've always inhaled onto my tongue when dry vaping, to catch scoobie snacks and monitor temperature. Using my tongue to gauge vapor temperature lets me control the flame distance and inhalation speed. I can get two good hits from an herb quantity similar to a log vape stem. Twice the amount or more gives huge clouds, especially if you do a long preheat for the initial hit of a bowl.

The stem definitely becomes uncomfortably hot after two bowls. I am also thinking of getting some type of mouthpiece to help shield my lips. It would be great if the Mendocino Therapeutics developed more accessories for the Lotus. A form fitting silicon sleeve could be a great addition. It could allow users to customize the color of the Lotus, protect the stem from damage, and protect the user from the hot stem. Even with the heat issue, I feel that the Lotus is one of the best choices out there for a butane portable.

Lotus will be my 24/7 driver, indoors, outdoors and everywhere in between! :D
Me too bro!

Wow mate! I still haven't been able to get my pipe to uncomfortable temps even under the bowl... Respect for the size of vapor you can inhale in such a short time! I would recommend a bowl of crushed ice to plunge the pipe and cool it down instantly... I used to do that with my first Lotus when I had the short pipe! We did it to get cooler hits, you can do it to cool down the pipe... ;)

I purchased this vape about a week and a half ago. I posted this review elsewhere:
My Lotus arrived 3 days ago. I love it. Using the single burner torch that you're given, the start-up time is relatively fast (~4-6 seconds to a good head of vapor) and you can get thick, box-like hits. Unlike a box, I'm not tethered to a whip nor electricity -- I can pass this across the room to my partner without being worried about sharing a coffee table between us.

I found the start-up slow, so I bought a triple-torch this afternoon. Now it takes about a second and a half before vapor, but the material can combust if I space out for a bit. The site recommends a double-torch at most, so I'm not entirely surprised (couldn't find one this afternoon). However, I have found that it hasn't happened since my first attempt.

I camp a lot, so vapor without electricity is attractive. The water pipe adapter works well, and I'll be buying a little mini vapor moisturizer piece for it after the next paycheck comes through. I own an MFLB (without power adapter) and a VaporBrothers Hands-Free Deluxe (no digital display). The MFLB is great for stealth, but I find being plugged in (or having to have access to electricity to recharge batteries) to be very limiting. I also don't like being tethered by a cord or a whip, since I'm frequently passing the piece across the room.

And after 7 years, my VaporBrothers Deluxe didn't really keep a consistent temperature despite the dial not moving -- the wood eventually dried out and cracked, and the weed combusted far too often. Don't get me wrong -- 7 years is one hell of a run, but I suspect that something with no moving parts may last longer. I have glass pipes that have lasted better than 12 years.

This isn't a super-cloud device, although you can get some beautiful rips. And it's remarkably hard to combust the weed unless you're doing something silly and not recommended. But I really, really appreciate not being tied to a box or to electricity. And I appreciate being able to fulfill the "lighter to pipe/bong" ritual as well...I think it's going to make a big difference in sticking with vaping over combustion.

Happy to answer questions!
I've since got rid of the triple-torch. I'd like to pick up an angled-neck dual flame torch, but the headshops around me are looking at me like I'm a nutter. The serious dab-oriented places all have torches for creme brulees instead of lighters. If anyone has a suggestion on where to pick up one of those torches, let me know.

I've tried this with my 2' and 10" bongs, and I didn't find that the vapor got thick enough to make those useful. I have the oft recommended VaporBros knock-off on the way (http://www.pipesdaddy.com/product-p/vp-0022.htm) so that I can try it out with a hydrator. I figured the knock-off was cheap enough to try.

I've also since turned up the heat on the torch lighter they sent so that the flame is 5/8", almost 3/4" long. This sped up the cook considerably, and I'm still not combusting (triple-lighter was a little more hit and miss).

I'd recommend the black cap. The neutral is pretty, but I "missed" the plate fairly early on, so now I've got a scorch mark (builds character!) Still loving my J-hook, although I'll probably pick up an aluminum stem for travel.

I'd also echo the desire for an 18mm adapter, if the airflows don't get all wonky. Most of the mini-bubs I've been looking at are 18mm, so I'm going to have to pick up a 14 to 18 adapter today (hopefully).

Anyhow, almost two weeks later, still loving my piece. I haven't been stymied waiting to smoke, nor do I have a box sitting on my desk radiating heat and burnt ABV smells. And I can pass it across the room to my partner, no problems. Just need a better lighter....

My stem doesn't get hot to the touch at all, barely even warm actually. The J-Hook does get pretty warm, but still not even close to uncomfortable temps...

Edit:@ollent I just noticed you have the short stem and I have the long, maybe that could be why we are experiencing such different results?

Sorry, you're looking for DaProfessor. I have the J-hook too, and I'd agree with your assessment -- warm, but not uncomfortably so (unless I'm nailing 4 bowls in a row, but the WPA becomes the issue at that point)

I ordered this yesterday and got the blue cap. I don't think I saw anyone else with that color?

Only my bro and you were brave enough to get the light blue one! :p

I prefer the natural one myself as the color won't peel off like the colored ones when abused... If burned a little sand paper will take care of it I guess. :)

Welcome to the club mate!!!

Nice review mate!

The lighter that came with my Lotus (the cheap one) gives me vapor almost instantly after the 2sec preheat when dialed at 5/8". It has to do with draw speed. Lighter initial draw will give you almost instant hits in my experience.

I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to destroy the finish. I'd love to know what the finish was so that I could go buy some and then sand the burn mark. It's not very deep at all.

Yup, that's been my experience as well. When I'm dialed at 1/2", the preheat was more ~4 seconds.

Still think I'm not preheating long enough though -- I'm not getting these massive "clouds" folks are talking about. Just sort of the same density I was getting out of my box.
