The Herbalizer

I finally tried the thermapen and heat gun test myself and found that at 445 with the bowl on but empty with top screen removed and thermapen stuck down in there that the temp climbed as high as 460 and still barely going up when the fan quit.
John Lewus, How long did it take for you to reach the temperatures that you quoted?

I ask because I received my herbalizer last week as part of the holiday bundle. Its generally worked great except for output. I've been having to run what seems like real high temps for herb (440f) and can never get good vapor from my concentrates and the liquid pad. I purchased the thermapen quoted here, removed the top screen as you did, and hold the pen vertically just above the bottom screen. And, when I set the device, while cold, to 445f, the only way I can get anywhere near 440f is after 2 fan cycles. Once the fan stops it drops steadily below 300f - while still set at 445f. Just want to try confirm whether this is normal operation? I hope not.

@notoriousLrg -- I don't get big clouds from concentrate like I do with a dab. The lower temps keep it from being a lung buster. Every time I use concentrates in a low temp vape setting (intended for flowers) I am underwhelmed by the thickness of the vapor. The taste is better, but you end up having a long session instead of like a quick nail hit. This can be remedied a little by putting more concentrate in there, but it still ends up being a session.

I too never got much clouds when using the pad and concentrates. The flavor was great like stickstones said but the cloud production was never there. I suggest mixing your concentrate with dry material I get thick clouds of delicious vapor that way. Very smooth too , I never cough unless it's a huge rip.

thanks for your feedback. IMHO, this all seems inconsistent with the stated operation of the Herbalizer. If it is in fact running, for example, 445f at the bowl, and along with fan assist, concentrates using the liquid pad at 445f should generate good vapor. I know its hard to compare different vapes and their delivery systems, but with my other desktop forced air vape, at 445f with a liquid pad (from a crafty), clouds & effect are endless. And if my tests with the therma pen are anywhere near close to accurate, this device does not run at the stated temperature. Not to say that you can't get it to the stated temperature, but that seems to be only with the fan on constantly, and even then, it requires several fan cycles and many draws. I've sent an email to herbalizer support and will report back with any info..

If anyone else can run tests with the thermapen, that would be helpful.

This is definitely not normal. Your Herbalizer should have percise temperature control and at 425f + you should be getting enormous clouds. As Sticks and mrmrmr stated, concentrates work very well with the Herbie pad, but your sessions will be longer and you won't get a hit like you do with a nail. However, I've found the concentrate hits to produce reasonably large clouds and the Taste is phenomenal!!

It will be interesting to hear what the Herbie guys response is. It seems to me your unit is defective and is running too cold. I'm sure you'll get this issue cleared up and start vaping like a boss. IMHO, the Herbalizer is hands down the best desktop I've ever used.

Definitely not normal. I was hitting 445 and a few degrees above with the unit set on 445 with the fan on in the first cycle. I only had the bottom portion of the bowl on the unit, and the tip of the thermapen was touching the bottom screen. My unit was spot on.

Being a non-tech type, this question somewhat baffles me, independent of the issues I am having.

Set the temp on the herbie to 400f. It quickly comes to temperature based on the display. Then turn on the fan. The temperature gets noticable higher, both by feel and indicated by the thermapen. Yet the stated temperature does not change. What is happening here?

Does the herbie have a particular method for obtaining temperature that is not affected by the fan? Does the unit turn down the heat from the bulb while the fan is running to keep the steady temperature? Does the unit have some factoring which assumes the stated temperature is obtained only when accompanied by the fan?:hmm:

Almost there...
Concentrates = Aroma Pad + Bag + Max temp with fan assist.

Trying to do concentrates and sipping on the whip is going to be less than stellar.

I find that the bags work so much better! Nice thick tasty vapor!!

@notoriousLrg -- how does your unit perform with flowers?
Well like I mentioned, I've been having to run what seems like real high temps for herb (440f) and even then I get minimal vapor without the fan.

When you turn the fan on are you getting the temp that is displayed on the unit?
So, from a cold herbie, for 445, I need to run at least thru two fan cycles before the temp on the thermopen (440) gets close to the temp displayed on the unit. And when the fan shuts down, the temp drops over 100f degrees.

I think I spoke too soon. This morning I noticed my Herbie bowl was leaking vapor, and not near the whip. Looked like it was from the sides. I don't think the bowl's covered under the warranty either. :ugh:

Yeah, the bowl is definitely leaking. Does anyone know a way to jerry rig it until I can get it replaced?

It's no big deal if it can't be done, I have plenty of other vaporizers to tide me over until I can get a replacement. :)

Can you post a pic so we know exactly where it is leaking. Then we may be able to help. Thanks

It's leaking from the sides of the bowl, while I'm using fan assist. I don't want to waste anymore herb in it right now.

Guessing you already cleaned the bowl thoroughly with ISO? The little grooves in the bowl aren't very deep so it doesn't take much to clog them up and keep the bowl from sealing tightly.

That is too weird as looking at all the the parts, that's the piece that should last 100 years....

Can you look very closely at two exact areas for any kind of burr, or dent, or speck seated on it??

- on the big bigger bottom half, the very tip / top rim of the stainless steel liner

- on the smaller top chamber, on the stainless steel O-ring/screen : the widest part of the steel O-ring,
the last 1/32 "

Any burrs, scratches, dents? And is that top O-ring firmly seated/ straight/ flush in it's piece.

Too weird that this leaks

The solution you obviously want and deserve is a fully functional Herbie bowl without modification. Since it's not working for you and not under warranty, here's an idea that might work for you. I can't test it completely since my bowls both seal well, but I did test enough to verify that the bowl seals as usual with the modification.

I used the silicone o-ring that is often recommended to use with the Arizer Solo for a tighter bowl fit. I just placed it inside the top of the Herbie bowl and tightened the bowl shut as usual. It sticks out of the bowl just far enough I think you'd get a good seal against the metal portion of the top of the lid.

You rock man! I just happen to have one of those packed away, and put it on, just like you described. I'm about to do a test run now. :)

It worked perfectly! No leaks at all! :D

For concentrates, I get really nice bags when I sandwich a dab between some bud.

I'm totally satisfied with wax at 445, getting plenty of vapor with a bag. Someone posted earlier that the whip doesn't work as well with concentrates, and I think that is true. The whip just didn't seem to do it, perhaps because the fan needs to run longer to produce significant vapor with concentrates.

I feel kinda dumb asking this, but how do i go about cleaning the screens in the bowl? I remember a prototype bowl almost falling apart after tourture testing it at the herbie test drive, now that one is in my house i can not figure out what magic holds the screen into the top section of the bowl, any cleaning tips would be very appreciated.
