Apps are trendy, but I think this is more of an engineering thing than anything.
If they can use your phones screen, they don't need to put a bunch of buttons or a bigger screen on the device itself. It lets them keep the vape smaller and simpler but have very fine adjustment available. This is part of why the crafty is smaller than the mighty -it doesn't have that huge screen or all those buttons. Electronics take up space!
I doubt you need to hold your phone every time you use the thing, rather, you just use your phone to find your sweet spot and set presets - then you just use the vape like anything else.
