It's a Moscow Mule sort of evening!

I forgot to buy limes on the way home from work ... :doh:

Served in a copper mug, of course!

I particularly like Absolut Ruby Red with my Mules, plus a little grenadine - but not too much. I just like a hint of it being there. :tup:

It should really have a lime garnish in there, but.... oh well.

So I've never been much of a drinker - that silly non-drinker line "I really hate the taste" holds true here.
Beer and wine make me gag, so my main go to was vodka + some mixer once or twice a year.

Then, last year for my birthday, I went on a pub crawl with some mates and ended up at a cocktail bar :brow:
My first cocktail I tried was a

I think drambuie is supposed to be quite sweet so I thought that would make the scotch more palatable...
Nah, the name certainly isn't ironic...

So then, I got myself
Long Island Ice Teas!

I got lazy and used a sour mix. And I use Cointreau in mine. :D

Hot damn did I find myself my new drink!

It was like a revalation that alcohol could actually taste pleasant instead of just being the unpleasant thing I consume to feel all wobbly :lol:

Cut to a few weeks later, and between 3 mates we pooled together about $900 to establish a nice cocktail reserve :)

Now every 1-2 months we have a cocktail party :), and we've only had to buy 1 more bottle of gin to keep the bar stocked :)

We got a scale thing that connects to an iPad, and it weighs out your pours, so that you'll get a nicely mixed cocktail each time.

It came with heaps of cocktail recipes, and you can add your own.

I have the Freddie special, which is a Long Island iced tea, but the drinker MUST have a dab/vape/smoke after the first sip. :smug:

There was the attempted Long Island spiced tea, where I switched the run for captain Morgan's spiced rum, and there was some like and pineapple juice in there somewhere...
It wasn't the best drink but I'm determined to make it work one of these days :lol:

I'm also quite partial to the "zombearver navel" which is essentially a cross between a hairy navel and a barbed navel, with a splash of grenadine or chambord on top :D

@EveryDayAmnesiac , have you tried a Tokyo iced tea?

It's the same as a Long Island iced tea; 1 part:
Vodka,
Tequila,
Rum,
Gin,
Triple sec (I found some 40% ABV [80 proof] triple sec :D),

And an extra 2 parts midori on top of that.

Use lemonade as the mixer instead of coke :D
(For clarity - by lemonade I mean the clear soft drink like sprite, not the actual lemon based drink)

Should you want to try again, there are two things to consider.

First of all, of course, would be the type of scotch. In this case, IMO, you want a very mild, "everyday" sort of scotch - decent, but ... mild. I almost always use Johnny Walker Red for whiskey / scotch cocktails. I find that it blends in nicely with almost any other ingredient.

Also, traditionally, a Rusty Nail is 1 and 1/2 oz scotch, and 1/2 oz Drambuie. This is the way most bartenders make them, IME. I prefer a 1:1 ratio when I make them, plus I add lime juice and a few dashes of angostura bitters. Still keeping it simple, but adding a little different flavor to it and "conditioning" the scotch prominence.

Another scotch cocktail that I LOVE is the Godfather cocktail - scotch, amaretto, bitters and lime juice again. It has a more "nutty" flavor to it with the amaretto - kind of "almondy" but sweet as well. Very tasty.

Sometimes, I'll even do 1 oz of scotch, the bitters and lime, and then 1/2 oz each of amaretto and Drambuie. Yummy!

I just go by "feel" and it usually works out well. ... Usually... :uhoh:

I did something like this the other night - did scotch mixed with Drambuie, amaretto, AND Cointreau. Good, but pointless and ... kinda stupid. Like mixing up 4 of your favorite beers and thinking it will be even better ... :rolleyes:

Thanks for your thoughts. I am surprised this thread doesn't get more play. I mean, I like straight booze as much as the next guy - maybe even quite a bit more than the next guy :D - but damn, do I love a good cocktail...

These pics are making me thirsty!!! I used to drink like a fish in my early 20's. Then a DWI, jail time and some huge lawyer fees made me realize I had to stop. I just make poor decisions when I drink so I choose not to. It's like poison to my body now anyways if I have just one drink. I am hung over for 2 days. But man, do I miss the drink. :cheers:

Dude I don't even care the looks I get sometimes, Mojitos are fucking refreshing!

Typically drink those or a Margarita if I'm out craving a cocktail. I second needing some sort of Orange Liquor to really kick it up a notch.

In college, I used to drink screwdrivers daily, best way to start a morning, an awful way to prepare for classes.

I'm out of town for my grandparents 50th...they had it at some Portuguese restaurant....unlimited red and white Sangria. The White..my god. Think a Screwdriver just turned up with some pineapple juice and other fruits....

I realized I was having a great time on the Sangria when I returned to the wrong banquet room and was BSin with "forgotten family members"

I don't know much about alcohol, but after following this thread closely for several weeks/months now, I have made one really important decision:

I'm investing in maraschino cherry futures. I may start my own ETF. Call your brokers today!! :nod:

Yeah, I put them in just about everything. I love them. :D

The nice thing about the more basic cocktails is so many ingredients overlap - so with just a few of the regular stuff, you can make a lot of different drinks that have only subtle differences. :cheers:

But once you break out of the 10 -20 common drinks, then it starts hurting the ol' bank account a little more... :ugh:

I moved recently, and it took three huge boxes to move all my booze and liqueurs and cordials and mixin's. I was terrified of being pulled over and being asked to explain it all. Lot of open containers ... ;)

Yes, the other thing I learned from your pics....that the good folks at Reese don't just know their way around a peanut butter cup. Not since Bic added lighters to their product line has a brand extension been so potent. :lol:

Unfortunately this is the same "ingredient economy of scale" that allows Clorox to make both bleach and Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. :rofl::p

Polysorbate 60
Polysorbates are made by polymerizing ethylene oxide (a precursor to antifreeze) with a sugar alcohol derivative. The result can be a detergent, an emulsifier, or, in the case of polysorbate 60, a major ingredient in some sexual lubricants.

Sorbitan Monostearate
Chemists call this stuff synthetic wax, and it's sometimes used as a hemorrhoid cream. It's one of the magical substances that keep Cool Whip from turning to liquid over time in the fridge.
