The 2016 Presidential Candidates Thread

I think it was a valid question regarding Melania's speech. It was too much the same as Michele Obama's. The Trump campaign should have addressed it and moved on. Trump is tweeting about it still on Twitter. This was a test IMO to see if Trump was going to act presidential but we all knew he wouldn't. Some have said he could have turned this into lemonade but he didn't. It had to turn into a shitstorm.

I was very uncomfortable with the lock her up chanting from the crowd and Chris Christie just fed off it.

Edit
We are hearing who helped with the speech finally. It was Meridith McGiver she is Trump's writer. We are told it was an innocent mistake and nobody was fired.

Stephen Colbert last night had a comedian impersonating Melania Trump. It was pretty good.

Tonight Bill Maher will be on with some convention converge, it should be worth watching. I'm looking forward to it. He will have coverage tomorrow night and then do his regular show Friday night.

As I stated in a previous post yesterday ( http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-2016-presidential-candidates-thread.18407/page-195#post-999273 )this is EXACTLY what they should have done right after the plagiarism accusations first appeared....

After however many inquiries all ruling in hillarys favour, there is nothing else to call it but a witch hunt,
http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/there-witch-somewhere
When it comes to amazing quotes, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) has an impressive track record. It was the Texas Republican who argued in February, for example, that it’s “immoral” to extend jobless aid to “long-term unemployments.” It followed on the heels of Sessions’ argument that “messaging” is more important than governing.
But according to two reporters –one from Fox News, one from theL.A. Times– the congressman was in especially rare form on the House floor last night. Responding to Democratic allegations that the new Republican Benghazi committee is a “witch hunt,” Sessions argued, “Well, Mr. Speaker, that must mean there is a witch somewhere.” (Update: the video of the comments is below.)

The explanation does not hold water. Melania read quotes to Meredith over the phone, who then put them back together in amazingly close order to the originals, and Melania didn't notice any issue? She is supposed to have read out these quotes over the phone clearly enough that Meredith could write it all down damn near verbatim. When it comes back damn near verbatim she's ok with it? Whatever. In the end, she stole Michelle Obama's values statement, unaware of the irony of saying "you work hard for what you want" when the words themselves are stolen.

My guess is Melania wrote the speech and maybe one of the kids edited it. But they couldn't let a Trump be a plagiarist so Meredith was convinced to take a fall for it. I bet she gets a fat bonus.

I really don't know why anyone is expecting "truth" from ANYWHERE in this campaign. It would be completely inconsistent with everything we have seen so far, not only in the campaign, but in the whole history of Donald being a public figure.

So, people think that now that he is running for president he is going to become a truth teller all of a sudden? And his campaign is going to be based on reality? Why would anyone expect that? His campaign is based on FEAR as it always has been. Truth would only get in the way, and we can't have that.

Putin is a War Criminal
What Team Trump was prepared to offer John Kasich
07/20/16 10:15 AM—Updated 07/20/16 12:06 PM
By Steve Benen

Over the weekend, Donald Trump repeatedly insisted that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) was always his “first choice” for a running mate. No one seriously believes this, and no one should: Trump’s reservations about the governor have been well documented, as have the near-desperate appeals to superior alternatives.

Take, for example, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a popular Republican governor of one of the nation’s largest and most important swing states. Kasich’s presidential campaign didn’t turn out well – he only won one state (his own) – but the Ohioan is a highly credible figure in GOP politics and in the media. By most measures, his role on the GOP ticket would have made a significant and positive difference.

And with this in mind, the New York Times’ Robert Draper reports today on an amazing attempt at outreach from Team Trump to the Ohio governor.

One day this past May, Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., reached out to a senior adviser to Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, who left the presidential race just a few weeks before.

As a candidate, Kasich declared in March that Trump was “really not prepared to be president of the United States,” and the following month he took the highly unusual step of coordinating with his rival Senator Ted Cruz in an effort to deny Trump the nomination. But according to the Kasich adviser (who spoke only under the condition that he not be named), Donald Jr. wanted to make him an offer nonetheless: Did he have any interest in being the most powerful vice president in history?

When Kasich’s adviser asked how this would be the case, Donald Jr. explained that his father’s vice president would be in charge of domestic and foreign policy.

Then what, the adviser asked, would Trump be in charge of?

“Making America great again” was the casual reply.

This reminds me of a story that went largely overlooked a few months ago.
In May, Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, sat down with the Huffington Post’s Howard Fineman for a lengthy interview, which touched on the search for a running mate.

“He needs an experienced person to do the part of the job he doesn’t want to do,” Manafort said in reference to Trump. “He sees himself more as the chairman of the board, than even the CEO, let alone the COO.”

The similarities between the two reports are striking. Trump, who’s never demonstrated any meaningful knowledge of any area of public policy, or really any interest in how government works at any level, apparently wants to be president.

He does not, however, want to do the things presidents are elected to do. That requires hard work, long hours, and, you know, reading and stuff. Trump can’t be bothered with such unglamorous tasks – he wants to “make America great again” while having others roll up their sleeves.

As his own campaign chairman freely admitted, day-to-governing and overseeing the executive branch represent the parts of the job “he doesn’t want to do.”

Kasich, obviously, spurned the outreach – the governor still hasn’t endorsed Trump and is playing no role at the convention held in his home state – but the significance of the story is no less important. Trump tapped Mike Pence for the job, and he’s an unpopular governor with a record of mind-numbing extremism.

As voters weigh their options, it’d be wise to remember that Trump envisions a governing dynamic in which Pence, of all people, may end up in charge of tackling Trump’s presidential duties – including, but not limited to, “domestic and foreign policy.”

Too stupid, Trump flying with a helicopter to the convention. What's more stupid is that MSNBC and CNN are covering it. I had to turn it off. I couldn't stand it any longer, I've had enough!

I still haven't recovered from the stupid hats the WA state delegation wore. The damn fir tree green hats shaped like a tree.

If he can keep his momentum going for just a couple of more points, when he gets to 15% then they have to let him into the presidential debates. I hope this happens just to fuck up the circular echo chamber :2c:

It requires three different polls at 15%, as well as the committee picking those specific polls as their selection options of the 15-20 that are available, but I wish it was that easy.

Public speaking is way down the skill-set ladder for a model. While they do "some" public speaking, there is no way in hell that it prepared her to do what she did last night.
Agreed. She's no dummy. The lady can speak 5 languages............fluently. I find that pretty amazing.

Being able to speak multiple languages is not an indication of intelligence.

Definition of intelligence: the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencet...al-people-grey-matter-know-mother-tongue.html

http://bebrainfit.com/brain-benefits-learning-second-language/

But, like anything else, I have no doubt that you could point to studies that came to a different conclusion.

For me, when someone can acquire and apply multiple skills such as having the ability to speak multiple languages or the ability to play multiple instruments, etc, I consider that a sign of superior intelligence, and btw, I can do none of those things.

Edit: I know that this is a bit off topic here but being that @Silat challenged me in regards to a previous post of mine, I felt obliged to respond. Back to our regular scheduled programming....

Unless, of course, she learned them as a kid. Learning language from immersion is a lot easier.

Do you know anyone who is fluent in 5 different languages? I don't. I think it's a pretty rare thing, eh, and learning 5 languages and be able to speak all of them fluently as a kid? That would be pretty impressive in my opinion.

Knowing several languages is pretty unremarkable in Europe. Whether she is really 'fluent' in all five is a big question mark. I happen to know several languages myself (including a couple non indo-european ones which are a good deal more challenging) and I don't see how it is relevant to this instance. The Trump campaign is a bunch of shambling amateurs, sycophants, self-satisfied Trump family princes and princesses, and inveterate liars like Paul Manafort.

:science: off-topic continued:

"While it was once thought that children growing up with two or more languages may be at a disadvantage, it turns out this mental workout has benefits and may lead your brain to process information more efficiently, even into old age.

For starters, bilingual brains have more grey matter, which includes neurons that function in cognition and higher-order cognitive processes. Further, in comparison to monolinguals, bilinguals enjoy:
  • Enhanced cognitive control abilities
  • More mental flexibility
  • Improved handling of tasks involving switching, inhibition and conflict monitoring
These benefits extend to all ages, from children to older adults. Bilingual children appear to have advantages in visuospatial and verbal working memory compared to monolingual children.

In the elderly population, being bilingual may offer even more advantages. Research suggests bilingual older adults have greater cognitive reserve, a "protective mechanism that increases the brain's ability to cope with pathology."

This may be one reason why bilinguals also have delayed onset of cognitive decline (by up to 4.5 years) compared to monolinguals, even for dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. In other words, being bilingual appears to help ward off cognitive decline."

Yes actually. Quite a few Euro friends are multilingual. You may think it impressive but has nothing to with the ignorance or smart quotient:)
And in Europe people who speak multiple languages are a dime a dozen.

I really have no idea how smart Melania is, and it doesn't really matter to me. Smart or not, speaking 5 languages is impressive. All I was suggesting is that learning them as an adult is much harder than learning them as a child.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that Melania has many skills I could appreciate. She is certainly quite attractive, and I can appreciate that. While that isn't a skill, there are skills associated with her appearance and its maintenance that she appears to have mastered. Then again she may have a team of people who do that for her, and it IS the kind of thing that lots of money makes easier.

Just dealing with Donald Trump every day likely takes some skill as well. I know nothing about the real Donald Trump, all I know about is the part of him that he shows us, and even being willing to deal with that would take something I haven't got, though I don't really know what that is. Maybe not a skill, but something. I would guess that it would take the ability to swallow a lot of pride at least, but who knows. He might be incredibly kind and respectful to her, even if that seems unlikely to me. I really know nothing about their real life, as none of us do.

@Silat, you made the following statement...."Being able to speak multiple languages is not an indication of intelligence." but the articles that I linked above and @grokit stated above seems to conflict with your quote and that quote is what I was responding to.

But, being that I'm not European, I find it quite fascinating that people who can speak 5 languages fluently are a dime a dozen. That sure isn't the case here.
