From what I just googled, it seems the LiPo batteries are safer than general li-ion
It's really just what is done with the packaging and handling. They are all unsafe or safe as they are all lithium ion batteries.

It would be extremely difficult to puncture the battery in the TB given the metal housing around it. Probably more protected than many other batteries.

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been an issue with liquid and electricity being so close to each other. You have the charging port open and located directly underneath the cup. It wouldn't take much for some liquid to accidentally splash out of the cup when putting it on or removing it. You also need to make sure the underside of the cup is thoroughly dried after washing before reinserting it on top of the puck. Wouldn't think it would take many drops of water down the charging port to have an issue.

I have no real plans of ever using the cup.

Yeah, the cup is fun as a gimmick, but not great in practice. I used mine once, filled with cold water. The act of care needed to use the Bowle with a large amount of liquid in the cup negates any real benefit of having it there. I would rather have a water bottle next to me and be able to sit or recline back and use the device in different orientations other than straight up and down.

Like the article u linked says..

Lipos are more likely to swell then liion and swelling in a tight space makes a puncture a reasonable consideration

Scary

Lipo is a sub category of lithium ion. So it is confusing. Here is a pretty reasonable read on it:

Unfortunately it is a bit confusing. And you could be correct that there is no pouch, but one complication is that apple changed their marketing to stop using the words lithium polymer and start saying lithium ion because that is more accurate and covers all generations of iPhones.
I see now. You are using the term liion as in all Kleenex are tissues but not all tissues are Kleenex

You are right my phone and headphones are Apple products but my HP laptop and cannon camera don’t say lipo either. Leads me to believe they are not? At this point I’m not sure

But aren’t they the same?

What a rabbit hole.

I’m not trying to get too deep into this topic.

I can google the same words in a different order and unfortunately get vastly different answers and articles

In addition to the higher discharge rate and swelling, I’m under the impression that lipo batts specifically are more sensitive to over discharging, temperatures and storage voltage to name a few vs other types of lithium batts. Making them easier to damage and more dangerous

That’s just what I gathered from the interwebs and past experiences.

I’m not an expert. Not trying to argue. Im more confused than when I started. Time to go vape weed about it

On the cup topic, I welcome the added protection. It’s borderline a case for the bowle and certainly adds durability

They aren't the same. The are all lithium ion, but some are in an aluminum pouch. That is to say another way, lipo batteries are a subset of lithium ion batteries.

A lot of lithium pouch batteries are in a hard case, but there is still a pouch there. This is very common in phones and laptops. The MacBook Air, for example. It is still a lithium ion battery, but it is also a lithium pouch.

Dood I know they aren’t the same. That’s my whole point. That part was was clearly sarcasm contradicting my whole post

Alright I don't think sarcasm is already to read ina text medium so I tend to take people at their word.
As you point out:
I'm not an expert. Not trying to argue. Im more confused than when I started.
I happen to have built devices for electronics companies using lithium batteries for a chunk of my career and I've seen a lot of wild stuff. It doesn't make me say that lithium pouch batteries are unsuitable for consumer electronics.

I don't have one, but thought it looked cool and even a bit stealthy when Lee Tabletop Bong used the cup for candy.
