You need to understand that there are Quranic prohibitions against the representation (drawings or statues of any kind) of ANY Living creature that were put in place to fight the Idol worship that was present in the Levant and Orient in the 700's AD.
This isn't a thread for arguing points of view (especially the hot topics of politics and religion). You're free to disagree but it's not a discussion thread for changing someone's mind about what's stupid or isn't.

Intolerance is some stupid shit!!!

and bigotry, and hypocrisy. Stupid shit can sometimes really piss me off.

Talk about hypocrisy, while the French government as well as it's citizens held HUGE rallies in the name of the protection of free speech, they arrested a French comedian for making anti-semetic statements. I guess free speech then is only allowed in speech that you agree with? Check it out:

Just watched that a few minutes ago. Seems a little hypocritical, no?

Hi guys! Funny to see how the news from France are seen by an american comic!

It's a true question: why the governement has arrested Dieudonné (the comedian) and, in the other hand, defend the freedom of speech?
I think it wasn't very clever to arrest him, and I don't think he will stay in jail for more than a few days...

But I see a difference between this man and journalists from Charlie Hebdo. I explain:

Dieudonné has been in difficulty with the french justice a lot of times, because of his anti semetic position, who is going very far from humour: he has supported Youssouf Fofana, who has killed and tortured a young men because he was jew. To say "I'm feeling Charlie Coulibaly" (the name of one of the killer) is, imo, very borderline. And I think this comedian is not making a joke here... It's his true feeling...

Charlie Hebdo is a satire, may be bitter sometimes, not funny each time, it's true.
Dieudonné is calling for hate... It's not the same thing.

What would happen in the States if someone supports the men who drive the plane who crashed in the twin towers?

Called a company who had a front-end receptionist. She asked me 'Who are you trying to reach and who may I say is calling'. Then she told me to hold while she transferred me.

I was never put on hold and I could here her the entire time saying things to herself like 'That wasn't right', 'Maybe it's this button'. After a few seconds I said I could still hear her which for some reason startled her. She then said 'Oh, I'm sorry let me start again'. When she said 'Now, who are you trying to reach and who may I say is calling'....... I hung up.

Thanks for giving some perspective. To answer your question, nothing. We have people saying supportive stuff, but they don't get arrested. Now if they show some kind of financial support, or even helping physically that's different. But the basic premise is you don't get locked up for words, no matter how offensive.

That's a good thing.
As I say, I don't thing it was clever to arrest him. The governement reaction was on the spot , because the situation is sensible in some suburbs... But imo, instead of shut his mouth, it will make some publicity to his stinky thoughts. You know, the complot theory is alive here too, and this comedian is playing a lot with that theory.:worms::whoa:

So you won't be arrested for making a joke, but you will be arrested for expressing your "true feelings"?

If support, you mean someone expressing his opinion that he agrees with those that crashed into the twin towers? What would happen would be that he would be watched.............very closely, but arrested? I don't think so for it would violate our 1st Amendment of free speech. Now, if he was inciting violence, that's a different story but saying that you agree with a perpetrator of violence is quite a different thing, eh? And from what I gather, that is what Dieudonne was doing. He wasn't inciting violence but rather sympathizing with the those that perpetuated it.

Pope Francis has defended freedom of expression following last week's attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo - but also stressed its limits.

The pontiff said religions had to be treated with respect, so that people's faiths were not insulted or ridiculed.

To illustrate his point, he told journalists that his assistant could expect a punch if he cursed his mother.

....can I just say I frequent this forum to escape reality and THIS stupid shit...

It's really a philosophical question... Is "Sympathizing" with terrorists in a public speech, an incitation or not? It's really a thin line, imo.

I agree. The line can be thin. Kinda of one of the reasons we have a Supreme Court, which, btw, has fucked up a lot recently.

There is a limit to free speech. We have heard, "you don't yell, FIRE! In a crowded theater." Inciting a riot or something that caused harm to others. You can't yell something like, "there's a bomb on a plane" unless it's true of course.

Well now...a Pope who advocates violence (a punch) if someone says something about his mother. Up until now I kind of liked the new Pope. Helping someone turn the other cheek by using a left hook isn't how I've envisioned it working. Guess I'll have to take back my 'like' on the Pope. Where is the 'unlike' button when you need it?

Oh and just for good measure...Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me...

In school we teach our children if someone hits you, don't hit back. You resolve issues with your words. Then if you hit back you will get in trouble too. At home the dads say if someone hits you, better hit them back.

Really stupid shit!!!!! The terrorist hit the buildings with the planes during 911 and Bush declares war on Iraq, they say they didn't declare war, war is war. People are killed or lives and homes are destroyed either way.

Our leaders need to use their words to resolve problems.
