I was looking at his original decarb article from 2012 that has been referenced on FC in the past. This was a dry oven decarb. He lost THC in that sample too and never figured out why. Wonder if there are other reactions taking place in the sample where solid components are converting to gases and remain in gaseous form even after cooling. I might try replicating this SV experiment to see whether, after cooling the decarbed sample, if there is gas in the bag that wasnt there before (i.e. bag stays puffed up after decarb and subsequent cooling).

My issue was most people assume ABV, let's say buds vaped in a miniVAP at 435F, has converted all THC-A to THC. The statement that ABV has a lot of non-converted THC-A is what I want tested!!
If that's the case, it would be more efficient/ more complete extraction to dry sous vide your raw bud BEFORE vaping so that all is converted to THC. Then you start vaping with all THC , no wasted THC-A leftovers.
Inquiring minds want to know......

Here is the link to the white paper I was originally referencing where 1/3 of the THC left was still in THC-A form even after 30 draws. This is the FC thread where it was mentioned. Yes they used a MFLB, but it did seem like they cooked it pretty good after 30 hits. My guess is that if you could somehow have a fine enough grind and were still able to get perfect convection airflow through the entire sample, then vaping should convert it all. Its the inefficiency caused by having a course grind and dead spots in the airflow that causes it not to convert....at least thats my theory. I'd expect you'd get different results with different vapes and different grinds.

I saw it yesterday on Amazon for $99 as well. Unfortunately I am guessing it was a May sale, and now that it's June it isn't happening. That happened to me with a Kitchen Aid mixer I was looking at on Amazon- I delayed ordering, and when the month flipped over it was $130 more than it had been.

Also found, on Amazon, some 3rd party sellers with Sous Vide brand water ovens for right around $240 with shipping. Keep in mind that with the Anova and similar ones where what you get is just the heater/circulator, you not only have to buy a vessel, you also will eventually need to buy a rack that fits in the vessel (if you ever want to cook more than one bag of food at once). The Sous Vide brand one comes with all you need except a pump and bags.

Decided to run a batch of AVB oil today in the sous vide. 60g of ABV, 375g coconut oil, 21g liquid soy lecithin in a large vacuum bag. Set the SV for 195F, just dropped it the oven in while still heating. Will leave in for ~3 hours. No oven decarb beforehand. Was worried I might have put too much oil in (added another 100+g after I took the first photo), but now that the oil is melted I'm wondering if its too little. Am planning to make caps so want the end result to be strong.

Thanks arf, thinking about this one. looks like this newer model is 800 watts vs 1000 watts for prev one. New one has bluetooth which I don't care about NOW--maybe in future?
New one has adjustable attachment so it no longer requires a minimum 8" tall pot. I do like that feature.
Just don't like $129 vs $99 price but I still may get it....

All done. Got about 260g of oil out of it, after losses. All went into capsules. After I strained I tried mixing in a little xanthan gum powder into the oil, so it would thicken up a little more and perhaps prevent leaky capsules. Just tried first capsule 30 mins ago and it seems same or maybe a little better than my last batch. One capsule is mellow and pretty much safe for all comers, 2 is a more serious commitment, 3 is space. Edit: ok it's been 2 1/2 hrs since I took that capsule and now it's really kicking in...definite success.

the thc shouldn't degrade anywhere near that extent at 190F. The loss is mostly stuff that gets absorbed by the abv. I want it to be strong so I use barely enough to soak the ABV. The flip side is 30% of the oil got left in the bag. The leftover soaked abv could probably be reused but I toss it.

THC-a and THC have a different molar mass. THC-a weighs 358.4733 g/mol and THC 314.45 g/mol. Some weight is lost in the decarboxylation not potency

Almost afraid to eat two at once.
I returned my food saver. Wasn't happy with the performance. Looking for a model with Pulse Vac mode. Have been using ball jars. Can fit four quart jars in the 12 quart container.
What does everyone use for vaccum sealer models? Also what does everyone use for liquid sunflower lecithin?
Next thing on the list is 00 capsules. Any tips?

Right but I started with 60g ABV. Even if my ABV was 10% thc, and if ignored the fact that most of my thc was already decarbed, the mass loss from decarboxylation would be less than 1g. I lost over 100g of oil mass in my last run so decarboxylation mass loss was not a big factor there.

For the vacuum sealer, I have a Vacmaster VP112. I started out with a regular foodsaver sealer, but upgraded to the VP112 a few years ago and have had no regrets. Its a chamber sealer...while pricey at $500-$600 its the least expensive and probably smallest chamber sealer available (but its 60 lbs and takes up a good bit of counter space). The advantage of a chamber vac is you can seal liquids, which opens up much more stuff you can do with it. It also has a stronger vacuum which some chefs use to compress fruits/vegetables. Bags are also cheaper and easier to use than the foodsaver. Believe it also has an attachment for canisters but I lost mine. If you've fully bought into the SV thing its a nice upgrade.
For capsule filling I use The Capsule Machine... it was originally on Amazon but its no longer there. Its worked surprisingly well so far. I also bought a syringe for filling. You also need to use gelatin capsules... the "vegetarian" options dissolve too easily into the oil. Only other tip for capsules is as soon as they are filled they go in the freezer and stay there for storage...keeps the oil from going rancid and prevents melting/leakage.
As for lecithin I'm not concerned with soy/GMO so not the right person to ask.

Since you are a serious cook I think you would like it. Not sure if food lasts longer in practice, but in theory it should since it pulls a heavier vacuum...and we never have a problem with freezer burn or spoilage. Not having to worry about liquids (or powders) getting sucked out opens up a lot more things you can do and takes out the extra steps of having to freeze liquids, etc. Because its so heavy it stays out on the counter and as a result it gets used much, much more. Bags are cheaper and easier to use...the whole process is easier so the sealer has become part of my regular work flow. My wife who is usually a total sceptic on these things initially freaked about having it out all the time, but now she is in 100% and uses it all the time. We use this thing so much I bought the ring stand to assist in filling... again its a little bulky and specialized, but it makes filling bags while keeping the seal area clean easy.
