So I've been a glass hound for as long as I could remember, or at least as long as I've been a pothead.

One of the things that always sparked an interest was custom etched and blasted pieces. I always thought it added a level of elegance to a piece and somewhat rounded it out. Although I never learned how to blow glass; etching was a way for me to add something to an art that I enjoyed so much.

So, fuck it - I decided to learn how to etch and a hobby was born...

I started with hand etching, using a rotary tool to literally draw on the glass.

Lot's of fun but after a while I realized it wasn't for me. The last thing I needed was any more vibration in my hands lol. Shit, it was like my meds weren't working anymore. :lmao: So I had to try another route.

Next we went with etching cream and acids. Meh......

It really didn't do much for me. I was enjoying the final product but the process was lacking. It wasn't really giving me what I was looking for.

Then one night I'm watching a video on youtube in which D-wreck was demonstrating his way of sandblasting.

That was it for me. I needed to learn this! It was so fucking cool.

I went out and spent a small fortune on books, online lessons, and equipment and let the fun begin.

Now, I've only recently started commissioning work. This has been a hobby for a long time and it's only recent that I've started to feel confident enough to work on my friends pieces. I don't have a pricing structure or a real business set up as of yet but being that you guy's are my family I'd love to start spreading my work here. If anyone has questions or has something they may be interested in having me blast please PM me and I promise to work out something simple.

I'm going to continue posting pics of work and pics of work being done as I progress. Any other hobbyists out there that want to chime in bring it, I'm always up for a chat and love company.

I have created an etsy account and currently accept paypal and google wallet. But honestly, my accessory maker status isn't so much to help me make sales or gather business, it's more of me abiding by the FC rules. Once I am truly set up for business you guy's will be the first to know.

I was one of the first to hear of this new venture and, of course, jumped on it. I sent one of my bubblers to mvapes for some customization. :)

My daughter is getting married this weekend and mvapes also blasted a lovely pair of champagne flutes for her first toast. They arrive today and I'll post up a pic when they do. I have another piece going to mvapes later in the month for customization. He's working on a special stencil that will really personalize it. There'll be no doubt who that bub belongs to.. :tup:

Really like to see another member displaying his skills.

Not to derail, but I was wondering if maybe you have any idea who did the blasting for the pieces from efs? I owned one of his gridded donuts and the blasting on it was amazing (see efs thread in glass section).

One day I hope to get one of my own designs blasted.

Would love to know a bit more about the process. Like, how exactly are the stencils made, and more specific, in what format does the drawing /design need to be? Does the drawing itself have any limitations aka are some things simply not possible to turn into a stencil?

I asked Justin from EFS about getting a custom drawing on my tube, but his response was that would cost way too much and that he did not do the blasting himself.

But still I dream of owning one piece with one of my own designs.

Could you give us any idea about the time it would take you to for example put a custom drawing on a bong, let's say, the size of a mobius matrix ion?

And last, any idea of sandblasted that do glass in Europe?

Hihi, would not dare to ask for his secrets. My questions are more in the sense of what would be easiest for him to work with if a client wants a custom job done. Maybe a simple pdf is all he needs, maybe it needs to be in another specific format? And maybe, if making the stencils is what takes most of the time, maybe there is a way clients can provide him with pre made stencils?

Awesome work @mvapes! I'm into stenciling and airbrushing myself, and have looked into doing some glass etching as well. You have some awesome pieces made so far. Looking forward to seeing more in the future.

That's a sick drawing.

Generally, for a simple one-piece stencil, all white parts on s drawing have to be connected, so it doesn't fall apart. More intricate stuff csn be done with multiple layers/sheets, or by sticking each little piece of a non-connected stencil onto something by hand.

Hey everyone, yes I'll blast anything. Material for stencils? Funny thing is, there's a lot of different things I use for a resist. It depends on what the item I'm currently working on is. For glass I typically use vinyl. Sometimes I draw the image by hand and others I use a vinyl cutter to help with intricate designs.

As far as Justin from EFS, I can't share all his secrets but he does his own stuff. He uses a photo type stencil system that uses chemicals and a negative to create stencils.

I love the drawing up above, great work. Some designs are real tough to transfer. You couldn't imaging how hard it is to manipulate stencils and blast materials through and around joints and corners. That's where all the secrets lie!

How about inventing a stencil that would do the etching for you, as in, one where the chemicals needed to ´scratch the surface´ are imbedded in the stencil?

Just my mind thinking out loud, but we are living in crazy times where I think our imagination is going to be able to run wild...think about sitting in the sun in the morning, with a printed page with the 3D lay-out of the bong you just scanned with your 3D scanner. A few hours later you return to your little house of imaginations and upload your drawing to your printer, which then spitts out the stencil to lay on your glass...for sure, one would need to master the techniques to put the stencil on correctly, thus always leaving space for the true masters of the craft...

Hope you can enlight us a bit more without the need to give away any of your secrets :)

Stenciling is where it's at. I met with a bunch of glass guys and when they start sharing trade secrets shit gets funny.

When I think of the stenciling I've done and to be frank, it's no where nearly as advanced as I hope to be I find it mind boggling looking at pieces sandblasted by dwreck and pakoh. The amount of work that goes into some of their work is insane.

hahaha bro we've spoken at length about our love for Pakoh, but christ on a cracker, those are absolutely beautiful pieces, perhaps more than the pipes rig or the luke wilson venetian colab!
