Jam, as a former smoker i simpathize with your struggle. It is not easy to stop combusting.
First, you need to understand that to really be efective you need to stop smoking! I understand that you might not see that now but it is. I used to think i could wing it, smooth transition and whatnot, it is total BS.
You might make it with a smooth transition but it is my experience, as many others here that to truly experience the vape high, you need to stop searching for the combustion high in the vape high.
That said, i would also advise you that you should get a portable and a home vaporizer or one who can do both, otherwise you will problably be unsatisfied with the portable since they usually have more flaws because of the size and portability constraint.
And now onto my recomendations:
For a portable i would suggest something stealthy, i own a Magic Flight Launch Box and a wood Vapor Genie and i currently only use the Launch Box although the Genie can give huge clouds and once you get the hang of it, it is easy to vape without accidentaly overheating the herb since once you taste popcorn, you now you are close to the end.
For home use, you can go for the classics here at FC, the SSV is the favorite of most here due to the big hitter capability and good flavour because of the all glass heating path. If you want something more versatile the Herbalaire is quite small and versatile with the ability of various ways of vaping (bag, whip, direct draw) and the Extreme Q has a digital temp readout, as versatile as the herbalaire.
You also have the logs, (HI, UD, CRZ are the main choices here), nice little things that are both beautifull and eficient. They have a fixed temperature but you can get a variable voltage power source to play with the temperatures and due to the small size they pair well with a bong adding some water filtration.
You can also get something in between to use at home, like a portable that can get used in and out of the house, they are usually bigger and not so stealthy, like the Vapir NO2 or the Arizer Solo, but if you have to buy only one these two would be in my short list for sure. The Solo excels in taste and the NO2 is perfect for the cluts out there.
To better understand what to get, you should understand your imediate most basic needs and also your maximum price. I am waiting for my 5th vaporizer and i am still not satisfied.
There are concessions you need to make when you choose a vaporizer, whether is stealthiness, taste, power source or sturdiness there is not one vape who has it all.
