Question about ashcatchers....

Are there two basic purposes for ashcatchers...to catch the herb that happens to fall thru when combusting, and to add extra diffusion?

I'm looking to get a very small ashcatcher (link below) just for extra diffusion...this one looks good with its honeycomb diffusers but I'd like your opinions. The more diffusion the better but I must keep this thing small. I would attach this one to a larger triple honeycomb bubbler/bong. I will appreciate any and all opinions.

Basically, you're gonna get more resistance if you add that to three more HC filters.

That thing would be awesome on it's own with a J-hook though.

I get that you want more diffusion, makes sense.

But as far as the purpose of an "ashcatcher" per se, I've often wondered. I admit I've never used an ashcatcher per se, but it seems using a screen in the bowl and occasionally tapping it out is a heck of a lot simpler way to detain ashes than another entire piece of glass to attach and clean. What am I missing?

Ah. Well in that case, consider a Mobius ashcatcher if only because they make the best-diffusing percs in the world (my opinion), so I'd assume their ashcatcher perc is fabulous and low-drag too.

Hc filter - honeycomb (shoulda picked that one up from context )

J-hook - basically a mouthpiece you can attach to an ash catcher to use it as a bong on its own. They are usually in a rough "j" shape, hence the name.

That möbius is actually a pretty decent price considering the brand name attached, I didn't realize möbius had released any ash catchers, I'm kinda tempted now what don't they explain?

I'd say go with a small shower head or tree diffuser in your ash catcher.

You've already got 3 honeycombs, another one is just gonna add drag, and isn't gonna add much to the diffusion.

Something like the FC-MOD on dhgate could be an option?

It comes with a main can, and an ash catcher, so you'd be getting a whole new piece, and still have an ash catcher if you want to keep using the honeycomb tube too...

You use the mouthpiece to suck out of and then the other end you attach to the ash catcher and then you have a bong or bubbler..just the j hook and the ash catcher..

So the "Flare Mouth Glass adapter" is the part you suck on? That flared end? Why such a deviation from the norm?

"Flare Mouth Glass adapter" may be misleading since that mouthpiece is kinda the opposite of flared it seems to me. You would suck on the end that isn't the joint. The ashcatcher would attach to the joint. It's like a Sherlock-style bubbler in two pieces.

Oh, I think that is just for people who prefer to purse their lips and sip rather than those who prefer pressing their lips inside the flared type. Ataxian is like that, for example. And the bulb at the end is just an aesthetic choice I would imagine. It's not that unusual a shape.

It is a good piece, the birdcage is kind of hard to get clean

I got a little ashcatcher to help with that. Although I don't ever plan to combust with this bong. Ever. Also why I went with the nail dome and not the glass bowl. I hope I'm thinking correctly.

Yeah, that's what they were asking you.....dome or bong bowl for combustion.

Oh, and as far as keeping it clean, read t-dub's thread on PBW and using cranberry concentrate as something cheaper than ResBlock. Also, thread on Alconex.

Beautiful piece, you will need to keep it clean, yeah?

I actually found some great silicone type wine stoppers at the Container Store that fit my glass 18 mm female and the mouthpiece and I use them to stopper my glass when cleaning. I still might make a faucet adapter and hose rig like t-dub's, but for the present these stoppers and a bit of PBW is working well.
