A real conduction vape is heated metal with the herb sitting on it, cooking like food in a frying pan. There's no heated air path for the herb, and the 1st generation dome vapes (BC Vaporizer may have been the 1st) are the best example, and pretty much only example. I don't know of any decent, popular vapes, portable or otherwise, that classify as conduction these days. They all draw outside air in, heat it, and supply convection heating. There's conduction going on in a lot of vapes with an enclosed bowl, especially if the bowl is metal. That doesn't make 'em conduction by design. Anyone who's ever used a dome/fishbowl vape, as well as good models, knows that a pure conduction design is very inefficient and frustrating to use. If it's a good vape it's primarily convection. Convection beat out conduction like digital disc beat out analog tape.

I 'll re-frase... Mostly conduction, mostly convection... ;)

MFLB anyone?

Not sure what you're vaping, max, but I'd like some.

Shh, he's on a roll!

I think I follow, although it's kind of a slippery slope for sure. Yes designs like the LB, the 8 I just finished testing (which I'd also term basically conduction), the DART and Revolution (which heat substrates saturated with goodness) and so on let a small bit of air in. However, it's a tiny bit of air, in the LB a bit more and vaping doesn't happen, right? I think the idea is to vent air in so the vapor can be swept out, much like in the Omicron carts (which are also pure conduction in my tiny mind). The air does not need to be heated to do this job, I think that's the metric we should use. A small amount of cold air doing no realy work. On the other end of the spectrum we have machines like HA and Volcano where air is heated before it's introduced and has to be hotter than the output since it does the actual work. Those are clearly convection.

And for sure Max should share. You distract him, I'll make a grab and meet you 'round back?

I think I mostly agree with this. I remember using a BC vaporizer back in the day. They were incredibility frustrating to use. I do consider that style to be a pure conduction vaporizer. What about the magic flight launch box? Do you think it is a mix of conduction/convection because it had the hole to allow the air to come into the device? Also take a look at the PAX. They list it as a Conduction style vaporizer on their website. I have not tried the Vaporblunt but I thought it was mostly conduction as well. I know allot of vaporizers have aspects of condition heating simply because the chamber gets hot enough.

The main thing I remember about those vapes is the terrible taste and smell...

No matter how dank your bud was they always gave it the taste and smell of burnt popcorn!

The MFLB does have an infra-red heating effect, but convection doesn't enter into it. As OF mentions, airflow does matter because if you inhale too hard, the cooling effect prevents vapourization, but true convection (heating by the movement of hot air) does not happen.

ETA Dammit I went round back and OF wasn't there! Prolly buggered off and kept it all for his ownself...

Yea they were terrible. It is one of the reasons I thought vaporization was kind of a joke for so long. I started out back in 2004 when the technology was not where it is today. The best option was the Volcano. I had a Vapor Brothers, and a volcano. The Vapor Brothers was one of the other models with the metal core and the glass stem that you just hold to the heating element. It worked better then the BC. The volcano took too long per session. The BC was the worse. It felt like something your friends built. It was like the soda pop can or apple of vaporization. LOL It worked but it felt like a dirty solution.

I don't usually vape during the daytime thank you. I consider the MF to be a very different design from the traditional conduction vape. The herb sits on a screen, not a metal plate. Call it what you want, but IMO calling it conduction just muddies the waters. Prior to the MF, the only conduction vapes, AFAIK, were the hot plate/dome vapes, where you're basically trying to suck vapor as it rises from a hot piece of metal. Anyone who's used a dome vape knows it's night and day different from any vape introduced in the last 6-8 years or so. That's why good on-line dealers won't carry 'em.

Well, since Magic-Flight calls it a conduction device (and I do too in Vaporpedia) I'm comfortable with that description. I agree its design differs from the dome vapourizers, and of course is vastly superior.

1. I could totally see a disaster when one of these pops up at a high school and the media tears the company apart for it looking so much like an inhaler.
I see your point, but I think anyone mistaking it for their own, legit inhaler is a stretch.

2. Non-replaceable battery!
Get used to it. You'll either be toting around batteries, as with the MF or Thermovape, or living with a lithium battery or batteries, that should last for years.

3. We've all seen early videos before from manufacturers and distributors alike, I want to see videos from fellow vaporists showing off the devices ability.
You do realize that this model isn't shipping until July?

And why is it that all portables are always matched up against the MFLB?
Always? Not so. But it's small and battery operated, as well as stealthy, so they deserve comparison. As for the other vapes you mention all being better than the Magic Flight, well, they're not. In some respects, some are. In other respects, you could like them better, for one reason or another. There's no vape that's better in all respects. For me, in a couple of areas, the MF is THE BEST vape for me. In other areas, I prefer other models. For vapes in general these days, what's best often comes down to personal preference.

I read that to mean 'wait until some HS kid gets busted with one of these.....' Otherwise, yeah, if some kid grabs the wrong one and honks on it....it'll turn on and start heating?

Since there is a process involved with getting it heated up, there is not much of chance that some 7 year old will come along and pick it up and get a hit a vapor. You have to turn it on and wait. I guess if some negligent parent left the device turned on and heated then the child could possible get a hit of vapor. That falls under the fault of the parent. Would be like leaving a loaded hand gun on the table. I think it is safe in assuming the likely outrage will come from someone who is 13-18 using it and getting caught. Then the media would claim manufactures are helping teens hide their usage from their parents and others.

to be honest, that would probably only drive sales of this. I mean, even with stuff like bath salts media outrage usually just leads to mass popularity. I'm sure there's a lot of people who would never have heard of a vaporizer before but would want one of these simply because they can "hide their smoke"

Hi Guys.
Thought I'd pop in for a quick update.

Re: Pre Orders.
The first small batch of units has Hit American soil! Got Vape should be turning your retail orders around shortly! I think they are even tossing in an A/C adapter with it, wow talk about value!
THANK YOU! to all the early supporters, We want to hear back from you -Good an Bad- since its feedback that helps us continue to improve the product.
Full production is ramping up over the next couple weeks.

Re: Conduction vs Convection
Conduction simply means "heat transfer between objects that are touching". And that is exactly what happens in our product. the outside wall of the heating chamber gets hot, the material touching it gets hot and transfers its heat to the material next to it and so on! This is the case with most vaporizers.

So to get the most out of your unit you want to maximize the amount of contact (fill the heat chamber) and maximize the quality of the contact (tamp your blend down to make sure it touches the walls firmly)

There is of course a secondary convection effect, and a radiant effect as well. but conduction is the fastest way to move heat from one object to another! For a demonstration...hover your hand over a 60W Light bulb and you get some radiant heat and some convection heat.... touch the thing and it's suddenly all cursing and running your fingers under cold water! :\

Re: Non Replaceable Battery
As We mentioned before. we considered this but a user replaceable battery would have added cost, complexity and size to the product. If treated right the battery should last a long time (plug it in regularly, don't let it drain all the way, do not leave it sit while discharged etc)
But For those people who have a battery fail out of warranty, We will be setting up a service bureau where you can for a reasonable fee send your PUFFiT for refurbishment. We'll keep you updated on details as they solidify.

Cheers
Andrew

I wouldn't say most vapes are conduction.

Interesting question.

As Clinton might say, 'depends on what your definition of "most" is'? If it's total number of models, it might be that convection is more common but if it's the part of the total vape production I suggest that title belongs to THC as every Omicron cart is a legitimate vape in itself, and they make a pile of 'em. By that measure conduction clearly wins the title?

You never know, maybe they are doing the invoices for shipping by order date. Hopefully you get an email saying shipped, soon. UPS has notice of shipping but no real info for tracking yet.
