Parents That Vape

I am a church leader and work for Walmart, so letting people know I am a medical patient is complicated. If I don't think they need to know for ethical or moral reasons, I just pass it off as CBD. I make sure to only use wax pens while out, and save the rig and e nail for home use. I avoid flower now because of smell, both outside and around the home, and stick to concentrates. If I explain that I use CBD for anxiety, that seems to clear things up, because people universally understand that busy people are stressed out.

Those are excellent tips! I’ve been exploring concentrates, and they have been helpful for pain control, but they don’t seem to give me the same anti-spasmodic effects that flower does. When I vape concentrates, I don’t feel the pain as much but my muscles are still in spasms. When I vape flower, the muscles relax so there’s just not as much pain that needs to be controlled.

But I’m still trying and experimenting...

Friendly suggestion:
try a good sublingual tincture in combination with vaping. I generally take the tincture first, then vape 30-60 minutes later.

A sublingual tincture takes a longer than vaping, but shorter than edibles.
What I have found: I can take a smaller overall dose with this combination to get the effects I want from vaping. What is seem like to me: the tincture starts the process then the vaping kicks it off and it all lasts longer.

It might be different for you, but it is worth a try.

You might want to try a sublingual tincture both alone and in combination with vaping.

Also on tolerance: do you think you can get buy with just narcotics for a week? or just cannabis for a week?

These substances are not cross tolerant so you might manage tolerance for both that way. I'm not sure how to manage narcotic tolerance. I Think for cannabis is abstaining 1 week out of 8-10 or so.

Yes, I have a bit of a high tolerance, as I’ve replaced part of my narcotic pain control regimen with pot. So no skipping pot for a couple days at my present pain level, unfortunately. So far my experience with edibles has been disappointing, but that would obviously be the ideal, especially where kids are concerned.

I didn't think about mentioning the combination of edibles or tincture and vaporizing/dabbing. To me that is always how I medicate, as they are synergistic in my therapy. I use .1 g of rso before a .1 g dab (perhaps the equivalent of .3-.5 g Flower) to handle pain, appetite, and nausea. The edible creates the base level of medication while the dab provides a head high and euphoria that I enjoy. Honestly, at this point, the edible is my medication and the dab is my recreation.

Oh this is a good idea, I hadn’t thought about combining methods!

As for tolerance, I would obviously prefer to be able to get by on less instead of more, but first I need to find a regimen that works. I can always drug myself into sleep or stupor when the pain is bad, but my everyday goal is always pain control that allows me to function as much as I can, with as clear a head as possible, and I haven’t really gotten near that goal quite yet.

I agree, the edibles or tinctures are very much worth considering.

I did a batch of cannacaps lately and they are the real deal. So easy, simple, and effective.

Yes, I agree, and it sounds like tincture is the way to go for me. I’ll go explore the forum, but if anyone has any favorite tincture tips or recipes they want to pass along, you know I would be appreciative!

And I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all the information and encouragement!

I have not yet tried using MCT as a solvent. What I have done is evaporate as much of the everclear as I can and then dilute the resulting mixture in a food grade oil. MCT is nice because it "carries" cannibinoids well into tisssues and does not sting. However, a MCT tincture will NOT have the shelf life of alcohol based tincture, which is shelf stable for years. I also think alcohol will extract more cannabinoids with fewer hassles. I think you need to refrigerate oil based tincture or use it up with some period(1-2 weeks). I feel with my approach I get the best of both worlds. I doubt there is much more alcohol left after evaporation than in stuff made with vanilla extract.

A lot of people are making tincture with MCT coconut oil these days instead of Everclear/ethanol. None of that throat burn burn and higher solubility, the MCT oil holds more THC per gram.

I haven't messed with this yet but that's my next experiment.

I guess a question for folks: at what age might you discuss what your are doing with kids? took a hiatus from use until my kids were all at least 18. When they were 21, I spoke to them about what my doctor and I had talked about and what I was doing. My then 21year old daughter had never noticed any difference in me at all even when I was pretty high(not sure what that says).

I'd be hesitant about doing this in front of/around really young/impressionable kids prone to imitative behavior. I waited until my kids were old enough to get some of the bigger picture.

They'd seen me with severe gout pain at times, I think they got it.

I decided on full transparency with my very young children for a couple reasons

1) I am using it legally and under a doctor’s advice

2) Have you tried escaping three young kids for any length of time? Difficult at best, and impossible at worst. I tried using it away from them at first, but realized it impacted our quality-of-life too much to have me stepping away constantly. And at times it’s a safety issue. There are times where I cannot leave them unmonitored, but I need to medicate. So that’s how we landed at full transparency.

I did feel a little awkward about it at first, like I was doing something wrong (“Can’t let your children see you using drugs!”). But in the same way I don’t try to hide my wheelchair from them, so why hide this?

My kids know that I have to take many medications, and that they make me more able to function. It’s just something that children of disabled people learn about earlier than kids with healthy parents.

And when they’re old enough, I’ll discuss with them the recreational aspect of it, so that they are fully informed.

I am so glad my kids aren't little any more. Vaping seems far more complicated when they are small. My adult children know I vape, and the response ranges from fine to enthusiastic. I'm in a legal state, for both medical and recreational usage. My grandchildren live in a nonlegal state, and they don't know, but I can't imagine why they would need to. The eldest grandchild is 15, and will be visiting next summer, and I have started thinking about this. Not so much about vaping, but growing. I briefly considered not growing next year to avoid the issue entirely, but I think it will be fine. I bought his mother a vape recently, and he now knows she vapes and is fine with it. My garden isn't of interest to most people, so I can't imagine he'll even look.

If I put myself in the shoes of a 15 year old from a non-legal state whose Mom vapes .... I'd know just about everything already and when I visit Grandma nothing is going to escape my purview. I didn't come out of the cannabis closet till my children where just about done with college. One child had no clue about me while the oldest suspected from an early age but still would have guessed I didn't use cannabis. Must have been the cigarettes that clouded the issue for them. Come to think of it I came out of the cannabis closet a few years after giving up the cigs while still combusting.

What do the parents say about their expectations before the grand's visit? Now that I'm completely open with my children and their significant others we can actually talk through things. I even gave my youngest daughter's live in boyfriend a vape and a tutorial while everyone was watching. We had a blast.

I've talked to my grandson's parents about this (He's 3) and started the conversation by saying I would never vape in the same room as him. That's all they wanted to hear at this point and we've agreed to discuss this again when he's old enough to catch on.

Considering his Mother is looking forward to both sampling my crop (from this season) and visiting a dispensary or two when they come out, I'd say she isn't too worried about Stoner Granny. As in all things, I will consult with her and defer to her most excellent judgement in regards to her son.
It is interesting going through these changing times. Legalisation has brought up a great many topics to deal with. I didn't use cannabis when my children were young, and it was an adult son that encouraged me to use medicinally. I could have used sooner, but until growing was an option, the expense was prohibitive . For me, growing makes using possible. It hasn't come up with my grandson, as I can't imagine he'd be interested in gardening.
I'm glad it's working out for you. It sounds like you are a good person, with a loving, supportive and delightful family. That's a wonderful thing to hear about.

My little one had me rofl this week. So I'm regulated to the bathroom when I need my privacy to handle my duties. So this week, I get done, start heading out to the living room to get some gaming time with her (we like to Fortnite and Minecraft together)and she says, hey dada, I know what you're doing in there.... Your making science!

We have an opposite situation. Our 3 kids are adults and know, two of our grand kids 15&17 know, our youngest grandchild (4) that lives in another state does not know. We both have cards and our state is legal starting tomorrow. We don't vape in their presence, but they are aware. All of our kids are drug tested for their jobs.

But we have my mother who is 95 yr old living with us ATM. She fell recently and weve been looking after her. And she does not know. I wanted to tell her but my wife said no its too confusing for her. She has mild dementia and does get things confused at times. Crazy how life unfolds, lol.

So day time I vape in my grow room thats in an outside building. At times my wife will sneak off for a few minutes with her fury 2. After mom goes to bed my wife and I share a mighty bowl or two in our living room.

In 1969/1970 when i was in tenth grade my mother found two joints in my coat pocket. She told my father, and he called the police on me. We dont talk about that now, dad passed years ago, and i doubt she remembers now anyway. We've come a long way baby, but at second thought, not much has changed.....one day the weed will truly be freed, of course I'll be history by then, lol.

Interesting. I wouldn't smoke a joint or a bowl anymore (unless there we NO other means available) I do know that some people still do both because they like the sensation of smoking over vaping, but honestly I think I enjoy vapor more than I ever enjoyed smoking!!
Thanks for your response Zymos! :peace:
Same here. And i smoked for 40 years before i even heard word vape.

i dont think the burden of knowledge is appropriate for a child, but thats my take on it...figure they got enough to learn as is and i really want them to experience just being a kid.

would be quite easy for them to mention something to the wrong person (accidentally/innocently) and things go haywire from there. few threads on here about this, and im still waiting for that day when the timing will be right but its years down the road, so i'll just keep the bowl warm till then.

any vape or combust is done physically away from them and mostly its when they are asleep, prefer to keep their actively growing minds away from inducement for now.
The first place it'll get mentioned is in school and thats the last place it needs to come out at.

When I first joined this forum a few yrs. back, I was all about super stealth: small vapes with fast heat up time for quick, mostly odor free one-hits. And I'd always keep things safely stashed away. These days, I'm still into stealth, but I have vapes stashed in places I wouldn't have dreamt of leaving them a few yrs. ago. Currently I'm coming to the end (hopefully) of a couple of months of sinus / bronchial issues which have required me to use a bubbler (very nice to be reaquainted with the old guy), and I've even started pulling that out surprisingly non chalantly while my kids are not too far off. Makes me wonder if I ever had to be so paranoid about things in the first place. Then again, they're a bit older now than they were then, and I'm more comfortable with the reality that eventually my methods will fall short and I'll be outed as a cannabis dad.

A cannabis dad is more than a hundred times better than a dad that's a drunk.

I think your children's generation will be much better at understanding cannabis than any previous generation.

Personally I don't think kids or non-participating adults should be subjected to an environment saturated with MJ vape residual.

We as grandparents don't have bongs laying around or vape around anyone but ourselves or with close friends that indulge. But with mj becoming legal in more places, attitudes are slowly adjusting as well. A bag/jar of weed is more or less the equivelant of a pill bottle or bottle of booze in our house. We're legal and not gong to go hide, but we don't push it either. If that offends someone, tough.

More than once some of those sideways glances we got at one time, turned into requests for info as in if mj would work for them or a loved one. Times are changing, we don't have to hide or be shamed.

Sorry, should have been more clear. Attitudes I couldn't care less about... I mean a similar consideration as a parent smoking up the house where children live. Children don't have a choice. I remember many a sunny days where smoke just lingered in the living room. Well, vape is similar but less visible. So yea, personal space people. And yes, home is personal space... yet I must go outside; by choice.

I agree.

In my home.....I don't vape around people unless they are like minded but I don't hide it either. I just go into a empty room or outside. Sometimes I announce where I am going and why when I leave the room and at other times I just go. Everyone knows where I'm going and why anyway. If I invited you to my home I am responsible for how comfortable you are in it. If you're a dick about it (and nobody has been a dick about it so far) I may not invite you into my home again. I also have various vapes in the open in my living room.

If I'm in someone else's home and I'm not sure how they feel I'll ask if they mind if I go outside. I've never had someone ask me to abstain or leave their house.

More often than not someone will say "Hold up, I'll go with you".

One thing that I don't do even when someone is OK with it....I don't vape around children in a enclosed room. I prefer to be "overly" considerate even when it's not necessary. I've had some friends and family break out the vape with toddlers in the room and I've asked them to use another room.....I usually go with them so they don't get lost :D
