Why would anyone associated with your kid's kindergarten class know what your medical or even recreational needs are unless they were close friends of yours... in which case they should keep their mouth shut?

I've been out of the cannabis closet for awhile now and I live in a medical only state but even if I lived in a recreational legal state I don't think my kid's classroom would be aware of me taking my cholesterol meds let alone cannabis.

If your concern is getting found out by mistake just keep it to yourself. I do understand though that some folks may look at you differently if they were to find out and cared to distance their children from the exposure. If you can't be good....be careful.

My concern is inadvertent exposure, as the smell does linger. I do the best I can to minimize it, but anyone coming into my house can certainly smell it, and I’m sure the smell sticks to me when I leave the house. Unless my kids are never going to invite another kid over to our house, it’s going to be an issue that I need to address. I do have a medical card, so thankfully the legality is not an issue, just societal prejudice.

I know I am probably gonna get shit slung at me from one direction or another but I will share my 2 cents.

I actually had a piece of art/school work that my 6 year old son made for me in his Kindergarten class and it said a bunch of things about his dad including that I like to vape. Not sure why he felt it was relevant, but he felt it was. I get heavily involved with my kids and their lifes. My 6 and 8 year old boys love to ride their bikes through the neighborhood and other kids often follow back. I have an enail going in the garage at all times, which happens to be where all the bikes and outdoor toys are as well. There is a high table in front of my vape area, but if you walk to the back of my garage you will see a glass bubbler and vape station to go along with it.

My wife and I are very open and honest people. With each other as well as our kids so we don't hide my criminal activity that is legal less than 60 miles away. As far as other parents go, well a lot of them have been within 10 feet of my vape station and never said a thing. They all send their kids to my house...no one ever seems to invite our kids or have a bunch of kids in their yard playing except one other house down the street that has slightly older kids but still allow my boys to hang around. I figure if were going to be the hot spot...I really might need to consider a Puffco Plus for mobility and discreteness.

But nowadays, it really is hard to hide something like vaping from people that get to know you. And besides, kids say the darndest things!

Funny you should mention smoking, @t-dub I was actually exclusively vaporizing for the past couple months and unfortunately it just takes too long. I need to medicate all day and I was quite literally spending hours in a room just huffing down the balloons one after another. By the time one session is finished, I need to vape again. I’m not sure what I’m going to do.

UPDATE: OK, this is a little odd. I decided after confessing my smoking sins to give my volcano a little love, and I have to say, it repaid me. I’m pretty nicely high right now, and I haven’t finished the balloon yet. I think maybe I was being too leisurely in sucking down the balloons (it’s all your fault FC, I should be concentrating on inhaling, not playing around on my phone)

@nosmoking Thank you so so much for sharing, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your experience. If people are around me for any length of time, they’re going to see me medicate, there is no getting around it as far as I can tell. I just have to do it too often. I try to be as discreet as possible of course, but I’m not willing to hide away and not be in my children’s lives. Oh, and at least your kid had you doing an activity. In preschool, they asked him what I did and he told them I “sleep”.

I've been using cannabis daily for more than 4 decades and managed to keep it under wraps from anyone I wasn't comfortable with and that includes my kids .... until I came out of the cannabis closet when my kids were in their 20's. And this was when "DARE" was prevalent.

The majority of those 4 decades we smoked cannabis daily and it wasn't until I took up vaping in 2013-2014 that I came out of the cannabis closet. It's ironic that I came out after finding a technology that allowed me to hide it way better.

We were heavily involved in extra curricular activities at all of my kids schools. PTA, volunteering for fairs, etc. Our house, being a half block from the elementary school had a sign, provided by the school, that said our house was a "safe house" that kids could run to in an emergency. I was Santa Claus at two huge Christmas breakfast parties at the school and smoked up both times beforehand. As part of being Santa I would sit on the stage and many of the mothers would sit on my lap to have their pictures taken. Pretty close proximity.

With all of the above I never got outed.

I do understand the potential for exposure though.....
When I took a job that required a bunch of travel one of the teachers told my wife how sorry she was that our family was breaking up! She got the idea from one of my kids telling a teacher that she missed me because I was never home anymore. The teaching staff assumed we were divorcing. If my kid was talking about our home life like that I guess it was possible that one of my kids could have blurted out something about what Mommy and Daddy do with this thing that bubbles and smokes .... if I would have let them see it.

@arthritisbites - you have a medical card....if you qualify and it's available maybe you could substitute an oil based e-cig. It's less smell, hits like a brick and it's on demand. It also isn't evident what's in it. Could be pure CBD or even nicotine and you can pick your taste AND smell sometimes.

How did you hide the smoking smell?!?!?!?! New Jersey dispensaries only sell flower. I’ve gotten some e-cigarette cartridges from family in Connecticut who have a card, but they aren’t that great. They’re OK for micro dosing to keep me up for a little while if I’m leaving the house, but it won’t work for my daily driver.

I did my smoking wherever it was safe and convenient..... in the garage which was in the back of the house (think man cave - tools, weights and tv), in the bathroom near a vent, out back on the porch at night or once the kids were asleep I'd do it wherever I felt like it if there was ventilation of some sort like a window.

Surprised NJ only does flower in their dispensaries. Some of us legally can't get flower but can legally get just about everything else. Go figure.

The e-cig oil based cartridges you've sampled don't sound very potent. Where they "low dose"? The ones I get here that are called "low dose" barely have any THC in them but are very high in CBD. The e-cig cartridges that aren't low dose, that are very high in THC and CBD had me on my ass. Hit me so hard the first time I got a serious case of the "paranoids". In NY the cartridges some of my friends are able to get are labeled by THC to CBD. High THC / Low CBD, Equal THC / CBD, Low THC / High CBD. A few of my friends who have been using as long as me initially got the High THC / Low CBD and didn't like it because it made them jittery/paranoid and will only use the equal THC / CBD. Guess it doesn't matter since you can't get them legally where you are.

They weren’t low-dose cartridges, I just have to medicate a lot and my throat starts hurting before my functional dosage is reached. So now I use a volcano and the mighty, with some smoking here or there.

I was coaching one of my kids' soccer teams, talking to a mother of one of the players at a practice, when I felt something odd in my jacket pocket. I mindlessly pulled out a half-ounce of weed, looked at it, then put it back. Nothing was said. No idea if she knew...

It sounds like you have a very high tolerance. Is it impossible for you to go a day or two without using any Cannabis? If you do, and then try to maintain a lower tolerance, the effects will probably last a while longer.

Another option is edibles, which have a much longer buzz time than vaporized bud.

Yes, I have a bit of a high tolerance, as I’ve replaced part of my narcotic pain control regimen with pot. So no skipping pot for a couple days at my present pain level, unfortunately. So far my experience with edibles has been disappointing, but that would obviously be the ideal, especially where kids are concerned.

You might want to try a good sublingual tincture. Those seem to be faster acting than edibles, but not quite as fast acting as vaping.

You can easily make tinctures at home out of ABV, which is like getting 10-30% of your cannabis consumption for free. All you need to do is wait until your ABV is cool and put it in a mason jar with enough ever clear to cover all the ABV. Shake it periodically. you can let it cure as long as you want. That mixter will keep for years and the longer it sets, the stronger it will get. A month after the last donation of ABV, use a cheese cloth to strain out the fiber. You can evaporate off enough alcohol to get the potency you want. I like to evaporate all the alcohol and replace with MCT, coconut oil or olive oil. Once you do that, I' wouldn't leave it set uncooled very long(maybe a week or two).

I can tell you this: I sure didn't feel much when I ate some leftovers from ABV that had been used to make tincture. I think the combination gets pretty much everything out. I still vape, but I am shooting for 2/3 of my consumption to be tinctures. I find tinctures to be generally better for microdosing. However, I'd generalyl use tincture made from flower when I'm doing that in a situation where I need to be careful about dose. The actual level of ABV tincture can be hard to guess.

Thank you so much for your detailed information, that was super helpful! Would the process be any different if I used flower instead of ABV? Just grind it really fine I assume?

You are very welcome.

When you are making tincture from flower you need to decarb it first. That means either
a) putting in an oven for a while
https://greencamp.com/decarboxylation/
b) putting is in a sealed mason jar on the stove top.

Be sure to keep track how much you put in and the potency. I figure 80-90% of that will get into the tincture. I personally eat what I strain out that has been decarbed and had tincture extracted from it. I don't like wasting anything.

A good tincture can be absorbed largely under your tongue. It takes 1/4 to 1/2 the time for peak onset as edibles.

Which is more important? Hiding your cannabis habit or being honest about choosing the safest option to alter oneself, for self and society. Should it be a crime to drink a beer or have a cigarette in front of your kid when alcohol kills estimated 88,000 annually and tobacco kills 480,000 per year.

Holy shit! Just imagine how many people die from the devils cabbage? Of course we all know it's ZERO.

I look at trying to be moral as an effort to do less harm (not always the best at this) and knowing about the safety of cannabis it makes me wonder why people struggle at all with legalizing the plant. Hell, people should just drop the cannabis prohibition already and just let people grow this plant in their gardens. It is good for the entire adult community.

My concern is not hurting my children in some way that is preventable. My worry is that teachers and other parents will discriminate against my children because of my use of cannabis, even though I am using it legally. I have no problem letting people know what my views about legalization are, but that should be my choice, not because I am “outed” by my odor.

I have said many times that if we were to go by science, alcohol should be illegal and pot ubiquitous. But of course, rationality does not always prevail in politics.

RELAX, people truly out themselves by their attitude, behavior, loose conversation, and sometimes odor. The teachers and other parents you worry will discriminate against your children are also worried you will discover their marijuana habits too. These people are every bit as scared as the herb tokin' pastor, his herbal secret, weighs like a cross around his neck.

If people are stressing the odor just tell them it is some new THC free hemp incense. /s

Cannabis by itself is pretty safe. Cannabis mixed with alcohol has some real risks:
a) the risk of an alcohol accident goes way up.
b) if folk are combusting, that combination runs real risks. I had a friend in college that lit a joint, passed out from alcohol , set his couch on fire-died of smoke inhalation.
c) I Suspect cannabis makes the risk of a alcohol related auto accident much worse.

I would like to see this pointed out on warning labels in legal cannabis states

But that isn’t a problem with cannabis, that has to do with alcohol. Alcohol makes every drug worse and more dangerous. Because alcohol is dangerous. The warnings should be on the alcohol, not the cannabis. Otherwise, you might as will put a warning on cars that using alcohol will make them more dangerous.

@BornAgainSteama you made me laugh, my husband said the same thing. While I’m worried about the pot, they’re worried that someone will discover they’re an alcoholic or whatever it is they are trying to hide

Personally, I'd put the warnings on both alcohol and cannabis that they are a bad combination. That said, I agree alcohol warning labels need to be more extensive.

I don't see cannabis as 100% harmless, but a little care goes a long ways with cannabis. However, a lot of folks just don't know what not to do.

I am a church leader and work for Walmart, so letting people know I am a medical patient is complicated. If I don't think they need to know for ethical or moral reasons, I just pass it off as CBD. I make sure to only use wax pens while out, and save the rig and e nail for home use. I avoid flower now because of smell, both outside and around the home, and stick to concentrates. If I explain that I use CBD for anxiety, that seems to clear things up, because people universally understand that busy people are stressed out.
