On Demand Vaporizer

Box mods use special batteries called 18650 (catchy, right?). I recommend these (on sale right now):

Or these...

Shipping for these kinds of batteries is always on the high side but the nature of on demand vapes is such that you need high drain batteries and I've used both of those with great results (just ordered five more HG2 cells actually).

The accessory I recommend is the long and short XL8R stems, probably the grey ones because I think the glass might be a bit thicker judging by the ones I've bought this year. You might get four batteries and pick up a charger for the extra two but I've charged cells right in the rxg3d often and it works fine.

Wattage sends a fixed amount of power to the mesh heater in the Splinter. TC monitors the temperature and sends more power to the heater based on how you're hitting it. It's honestly kinda glorious because wattage and TC have different personalities that are equally rewarding and fun to use. With wattage it's more like here comes the hit and if I draw slowly it's gonna get massive eventually as the heat builds, potentially with a hot spot in the center of the bowl.

TC is less brute force, more refined and ideal for stretching out the flavor hits. With a properly configured rxg3d you can get big fluffy clouds and then remove the stem to see surprisingly light and even avb as you go. Wattage is typically more of a rapid extraction and more high temp, stony effects. Trying lower wattage or a higher TC temp undercuts that generalization and is also very rewarding to try.

At first I always recommend folks get into wattage with their new Splinter because it works really well and is a shorter path to big clouds since the heat builds up the longer you hit.

It's worth mentioning that on demand convection devices like the Splinter reward long, slow to medium speed draws. Imagine hitting something with the draw resistance of your Mighty for ten to fifteen seconds. That's where the most impressive Splinter hits come from.

There's more combustion risk in wattage but everyone knows the healthy range for a given Splinter so if you get a V2 just start around 32 to 36W and monitor the warmth of the vapor during your draw and you'll have no issues.

I included a pic in my previous post of the settings I use for my V2. They'll be different for a ZV2 since the heater is bigger and uses more power.

Finally, the rxg3d supports Arctic Fox and myevic firmware so you can effectively put a new operating system on your mod that has handy settings and a more useful display with the kinds of numbers you'll want to see. I recommend crossing that bridge later once you're comfortable using the Splinter and rxg3d combo in wattage. Once you have TC figured out you can hand it to your wife with the temp at the right place and she'll just hold the fire button when she hits it like she does in wattage.

Bossman - Fantastic explanation. May I assume that TC stands for temperature control? I'm on the Rasta.... website now - they do offer a Splinter V2 without the Z, but your recommendation is what I'm am going to purchase. Thanks for your patience in answering my questions.

The “Z” is taken from the discontinued Zion RBT used to make. It’s a more powerful heater than the standard Splinter.

Yes.

TC monitors the temperature and sends more power to the heater based on how you're hitting it.

Not quite – TC monitors the resistance of a heating element (like a coil or mesh), which will change according to the temperature. There's no actual temperature sensor involved.

Beside that – excellent explanation indeed.

TCR is actually the abbreviation for temp mode and as @Siebter notes it stands for "temperature as a coefficient of resistance". I elected not to unpack that in my last text because I don't really understand electricity and the key difference is that the heater is working more or less hard depending on how fast you draw and what the target temp is.

As for the two Splinter models I recommended, the first is the Splinter V2 and the second is the Splinter ZV2. The Splinter Zs all have the bigger heater and are a bit slower to warm up but have a higher ceiling for flavor. It's totally fine to just get the smaller V2 at first but the cooling stems will add another thirty bucks. For that reason I linked to the V2 and ZV2 combo deal with the XL8R cooling stem. The two V2s for $99 is also a great value but alas I have two V2s already.

Ahem... so yeah to start with I'd suggest ordering either a Splinter V2 or a ZV2. If a speedy first hit is the priority get the V2 and if the best flavor from top shelf flower is the priority get the ZV2. Or get both. And also get the cooling stems. The best deal on that mod right now is probably here (ten percent off with code Gen3D):

Bossman - Wow, used your code and the price dropped from $42.00 to $29.40. Shame it's coming from Hong Kong !! Now need to order the Splinter.

Any USA vendors selling the Wismec. I found 1, but they were sold out.

I strongly advise you get some form of cooling stem or bubbler with a Splinter. I recently upgraded from a v2 to a Z and don't think I could use the Z at all without the extra cooling of the long XL8R. The Z gives amazing hits but damn they get hot. Lately I've taken to dipping the end of the stem, in a ziplock, into a glass of ice water for a few seconds after every 2-3 hits to cool it back off. I could take shorter pulls I guess but where's the fun in that...

Do you still feel the heat when using the XL8R?

With the Z and it's bigger heater, yes. The first couple of hits are fine, in fact they are great, but eventually the whole stem heats up to the point where it's uncomfortable on the lips and the air coming through is really hot. With the smaller v2 this didn't happen until the very end and only when pushed too hard. I am finding the quick dip in ice water helps a lot. There is some risk mixing hot glass and cold water so approach with caution. I don't try to freeze the whole stem, just cool it a little. I mostly use mine in the garage and don't want to deal with a bong out there (and I don't own one).

Note I have big lungs and regularly take 15-20 second draws. It's a self-inflicted problem and I've only used the v2 once since I got the Z.

My draws are about one half duration of yours. Do you think heat will still be an issue?

The Splinter/Z are great devices. I like using a dna 250, but sometimes I’ll just pop it into wattage mode, I just am not as great at managing the draw control at wattage mode and have sometimes combusted.

you should also check out the Tetra or Tetra-x vaporizer by @funkyjunky. I have not used the tetra series but I own a Tubo and Tubo-X, which are less powerful (but still absurdly powerful).

Funkyjunky’s firmware allows for on demand hits like the RBT vapes, but additionally a cruise mode that makes for pure convection, hands free sessions.

Wouldn't a FF2+ be any good here? Wondering why nobody mentioned it yet, are they bad?

I just ordered a Crafty+ and was thinking if I should have tried that new FF instead for about the same money.

I was just thinking the same thing. I have the FF2+ and it's my home go to. It works great. Easy to use. Easy to clean. Has a good long charge and quick charge up. It doesnt stink. The only negative I can think of , if I have to come up with one, is sometimes I have to stir my bowl but it's really not a big deal if you are a 1-3 hitter per session like me. Sounds like his wife is the same. Seriously look at the FF2+

My vote goes for the 'Plenty' by S&B
The best vaporizer ever and I can't see how it will ever be improved on! (except for maybe 2 L.E.D.?) :myday:
Plug in, for max power, but very portable for home use.
