I'm pretty happy! Obama is still our president, my state passed a law that will allow same sex couples to receive marriage licenses, (meaning my mom, and my mom, can finally get married, and some day, I can too) and there are two states in this country who have passed laws in favor of legalizing recreational use of cannabis. I don't see how I could be upset tonight! I figured this would be an appropriate thread to post my post election happiness.

And this from Obama's acceptance speech:
"I believe we can keep the promise of our founders, the idea that if you're willing to work hard, it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from or what you look like or where you love. It doesn't matter whether you're black or white or Hispanic or Asian or Native American or young or old or rich or poor, able, disabled, gay or straight, you can make it here in America if you're willing to try."
You would NEVER hear a Republican say those words. You would NEVER hear them say, "gay or straight, you can make it here............."
It's stuff like that that makes me seriously think that the Moderate Republicans HAVE to take their party back from the conservative evangelical religious right. There is no way in hell that they can alienate minorities, be they racial minorities or sexual minorities or women for that matter, and even begin to think that they can win an election strictly based on the belief that they are good, straight white Christians. The racial makeup and social aspects of this country is changing, and unless they get with the program, they will remain an angry party that feels persecuted if someone doesn't believe in their world view of things and that truly thinks that the earth is only 6000 years old.
Hannity, Beck, and Nugents heads must be exploding right about now.....

God forbid that they should tell the Republican party that they need to look inward for necessary changes rather than saying that they should be playing the poor poor pitiful victim who has been victimized by the evil liberal press................again. For a party that touts that everyone should take personal responsibility, they take the least, especially when it comes to their failures.

I'm a Brit so feel free to tell me to mind my own business, but I do have a big interest in US politics.
It seems to me that putting ideology to one side, Romney loosing was very important, due to the regular blatent lies he told during the campaign. Sure politicians always spin and stretch the truth, but to completely make things up (such as the "apology tour") was a new low.
I really hope this convincing Obama victory encourages the Republicans to not blatently lie in this way in future campaigns. That said, the media really didn't do a good job on calling Romeny out on his lies, so I think the Republicans will probably take the view that they can get away with it again. I really hope this is not the case. Democracy relies on voters knowing basic facts to base their opinions on.
I honestly think it will take another big election loss, maybe two, for the Republican party to reform. They have become so ideologicaly "pure" that I'm sure they will think they lost this election because Romney wasn't conservative enough!
Maybe if they lose Texas in 2020 they might consider appealing to the center more. It could happen, the Latino vote is becoming more and more important every year there.

Yup. That too. A party in total denial as to what is really happening here. Their base is white religious males over 65 years old. Whites are becoming the minority, baby boomers are dying off and atheism is growing faster than Christianity. The Republican party better change with the times and become a party that is inclusive, that respects cultural differences, along with different religious and sexual views.
They don't need to become liberal. They just need to move away from the edge of the far Right. Both parties can either occupy center-left and center-right and STILL be able to differentiate themselves.
But like you said, yelooo, they will probably say that they were not conservative enough and honestly believe that if they had a candidate like Santorum or Bachman, they would have won. Talk about delusional.

Exactly, how you gonna win without the "minority" vote? Sheeeeut blacks, Latinos, GLBT crowd, atheists... These people aren't "minorities" anymore, you can't disregard their vote. The great U.S. is a mixing pot of all sorts of people and lifestyles, if the Republican Party doesn't appeal to diverse populations they are going to lose.
Personally I feel Romney is viewed as a rich and out of touch individual. How the hell is he going to win against a charismatic down to earth guy like Obama? Uptight corporate ass Mormon vs. smooth talking down to earth Obama. Without really getting into politics and policies I just wanted to point out perception is very important, regardless of the issues at hand.
That being said, I'm a registered independent and wish they would do away with parties and electoral college bullshit. Popular vote for the best person with the best policies and willingness to follow through. I feel like parties just polarize sides and people get all heated and attack other parties they don't identify with. How bout someone in office who doesn't lie and follows through with what he/she said they would. Deep down I think that's all we really want.
Oh and maybe to avoid federal prosecution in states where they have their own laws

I suppose the problem with that would be that it would make US elections even more of a rich mans game than it already is. Without the backing of the party machinery for raising funds and organising rallies etc I think it would be completely impossible for anyone who isnt a millionaire to win office.
Sure politcal parties are a pain, but I don't think abolishing them is necessarily a good idea.

Yeah parties are good and bad, Politics just piss me off because of the lack of transparency and accountability. I was raised an honest guy and told never to lie. Politicians say what they say to get elected. Follow through is another issue unfortunately.
