Well, I got myself an Enail the other week and have had some time to play with it, as well as to go through Ti, quartz, and ceramic nails. I figured now would be a good time to post up about this, and this seem the appropriate venue.
The Enail in question is made by
Nectar Nail.
The unit in question is pretty standard. Digital controller, smallish footprint, 5-pin connection. The unit itself, is supposed to be well programmed and allows for slower controlled heat ups to preserve coil life, as well as not allowing heat to spike on initial warm-up.
Following them on Instagram, I was able to snag my unit for $300 shipped, and that included both a Ti nail as well as a quartz nail + some free silicone containers and a quartz dabber. Customer gets a choice of the 16mm (15.8) barrel coil or the 16mm (15.8) flat coil. I opted for the barrel since that's the only one what fit both the Ti and quartz nails.
Everything comes with a 1 year warranty, after which things can be replaced "for a small fee".
Fast forward from ordering a bit, and I get the unit within 3 business days. It was very well packaged, with every part individually boxed/bubble wrapped. Ships out of Colorado and came USPS 2-3 day Priority mail. The only problem I had was that the Ti nail I got was male and not female, like I had expected. A quick email to their customer support got it squared away and they ended up sending me an entire new nail (not just the bottom female adapter)! So I basically got 2 interchangeable Ti nails and a quartz nail in this deal. Nice!
The first thing I tried was the quartz nail. The taste on it was AMAZING, but I just couldn't get satisfactory clouds and the oil would pool on the cup floor. Further research revealed that this is a common issue with a lot of quartz Enails, seeing as how the floor of the nail typically is never directly heated... and quartz sucks balls for heat xfer. Speaking with NN about this, they confirmed it can be an issue and that they are working on a redesigned quartz nail with a raised floor (to better heat the bottom of the cup with a barrel coil), as well as some club banger style quartz nails!
But I digress...
I then moved on to the Ti. This was actually my first experience with Ti, having always used quartz. This wasn't an issue, obviously, since I got badass performance right out of the box. Dialed in 700° F on the controller, let it warm, and it hit like a champ right off the bat. My only (slight) disappointment was that it didn't taste as good as the quartz.
Not to say it tasted bad, but I am a flavor snob and I could tell the difference... even so slight as it was.
This then leads to me look into ceramic options. I believe it was this thread (or maybe another, IDK anymore) that took me over to the domeless.com website. From there, I purchased the adjustable 2 piece ceramic nail w/ universal adapter. The guy over at Domeless (awesome guy and customer service as well BTW) was kind enough to also include a 2nd cup without the adjustable nut, since the threading might be too wide for the coil to fit over...
And he was right. I ended up having to use the non-adjustable nail, with Domeless' optional ceramic washer/piece of boro tube "kit", to rig the coil up against the bottom of the ceramic cup. Its a bit more bulky and superfluous, but it gets the job done and seems pretty solid once assembled. Performance wise Id say its on par with titanium but with the flavor retention of quartz. Given that I never need to unevenly heat, or overheat the nail with a manual torch I dont foresee longevity being an issue baring an accident of some sort, either. Hopefully this will spare me from any of the cracking issues people see with manually heated ceramic nails.
Regardless, this is without a doubt, my favorite setup out of the 3.
Oh, and about that coil! Yes, I also ended up ordering a flat coil from Nectarnail @ $65 (they charge $95 on their website if you buy it a la carte). This is the coil I should have went with to begin with. It fits and works on the titanium and ceramic nails SOOOOOOO much better. Heat is much more evenly distributed, and its much more efficient as I do not see the unit heating up as much to stay at temp... plus I get very little temp drop when hitting the piece compared to before. Then again that could also be because of the ceramic.
Anyway... to sum it up, I think this was money well spent, especially in the name of science. If I were to do it again, I would simply get their cheaper deal either with just a Ti nail, or just the unit/coil itself. In either case, I'd then add the ceramic nail after the fact. Also, I want to say that I love and hate having this thing. I love it because it makes dabbing so effortless! I also hate it because it makes dabbing so effortless...
And now here are some beauty shots, as to not make this post so dry!
Here's the unit, with a small OS pad for size comparison:
...and the "rigged" ceramic nail:
And since I know someone will ask, here's a better shot of my pink slyme drop-down from Rick Bird:
Oh and before I forget, I should note that the temp is high on the unit because I found (for whatever reason) the ceramic doesn't get as hot at the same settings as say, titanium.
700 = ~700° on Ti.
777 (Im not kidding) is ~600° F on the surface of the ceramic nail. Also if there is enough interest, the rep I spoke to at NN said we could get an FC discount going.
