Flat coils are better than barrel coils. There is a simple reason for this:

Many will remember that especially in the early days of enails, most cheap quartz enails were shit because the floor of the dish would just pool up with liquid oil that takes forever to boil or didn't ever fully vaporize!

This was a combined result of the inefficiency of a barrel coil (where the heat is being applied to the sides of the dish, not the floor where your dab is going!) and the fact that the floor of the dish in these shitty cheap quartz nails was below the sides of the dish where the barrel coil makes contact with the nail. Moreover, heat rises. This means that any conduction of heat from the sides of the dish to the floor of the dish is inefficient (especially with quartz!).

Still, anyone who has used a barrel coil vs flat coil for a ceramic nail knows that barrel coils are ineffective by comparison, requiring a considerably longer heatup time. I'm basing this off my experience of the domeless.com nails, I still use their 20mm barrel adapter screwed into my dab table as a stand for my universal 2.0 carb cap, it works perfectly for this - which is fortunate as it sucked for heating my domeless.com ceramic nail lol. Ceramic is more conductive than quartz, yet barrel vs flat coil is still a significant factor!

I should remind all who are concerned about uneven distribution from the flat heater coil to the floor of the dish due to the gaps in-between the wound coil that d-nail have titanium washers to mitigate this issue. The ti washer goes on top of the flat heater coil and below the halo to even out distribution of heat across the dish. These washers come standard with the 1.4 base and first appeared with the Sapphire halo ;) I have used this for quite some time now and cannot go back to not using any of my halos without the ti washer! It requires a minimal extra bit of heat, probably add 20-50 degrees f to the temp with this one attached.

Finally, the sapphire insert, when used the way it was intended to be used certainly leads to convection heating! You are supposed to put the dab on the sapphire insert before it is on the nail and hot. Then you place the loaded sapphire insert on top of the ti washer with a pair of tweezers and then immediately cap and inhale air, which is heated and vortexes around the load causing it to boil. The sapphire inserts also incorporate the wik technology and unless you overload the insert, you should get no dripping onto the SiC - I never do!

Get a pair of tweezers if you use a sapphire insert with the halos people! If you are just using the insert as a conduction surface, you are much better off putting it into the infiniti large dish (or better still get the other sapphire insert with a match 1.x d-nail dish, which will give you a bigger sapphire surface to dab on).

But what if your goal is NOT to dab on the directly (Conduction) heated surface? I really like the idea of the entire chamber that you are dabbing into being at the desired temperature including the floor, walls, and air surrounding my dab surface. Plus the flat coil has much less surface area touching the nail to actually transfer the heat. Even the Sapphire I tried dripped off and really sublimated off of every surface on the nail including the Ti nut. I'm not saying it wasn't delicious, I'm just saying I don't think it's the "Final design" perfect next gen nail we are all looking for. Let me say I have 3 coils I am currently using, a 16mm barrel, a 20mm barrel, and a Flat coil and they all work great with the right nail. In all fairness I am using the flat coil on a run of the mill Ti HE nail (*NOT SiC or Quartz halo) and my barrels get the benefit of being on super nice liger bangers with convection quartz inserts (quartz dab surface never touches the hot Ti, works on convection only) I found my barrel coils do this MUCH better when using the right nail. When using crappy chinese nails almost all coils suck, but when using the appropriate nail for the coil appropriate coil I think the barrel + Liger banger makes the most since for low temp dabbing. I like my Barrel+Liger better than my flat+ HE nail. Maybe the quartz halo would change my mind but I doubt it. Just to play last night I was dabbing under 500 degrees in the "oven" and it was still providing nice hits. This does not happen with my flat coil, it takes much longer for the dab to vaporize at the same temp. I need to upgrade my flat coil setup with the quartz halo to really give these 2 a head to head comparison for sure but the 20mm barrel coil + Liger is way in the lead when it comes to the nightly dab sessions at my house.

Does anyone have both the D-nail with quartz halo (flat) and a Liger 2.0 with a quartz dish (Barrel) to compare? Just curious since these 2 seem to be ahead of the competition.

The discussion on the slim series assembly seemed off to me as the heater retainer is only 21 or 22 mm (don't have one right in front of me so can't measure) meaning if you use it to evenly distribute heat across the dish you would only be heating the inner 2/3 of the dish leaving the outer rim unheated. I contacted d nail this morning and this is what Diane had to say:

"Good Afternoon Rob,

It will go below the coil.

So assembly from bottom to top would be -

base -> little washer -> heatsink -> large washer -> coil -> dish

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Diane S. - D-NAIL® Customer Service Specialist"

A titanium washer to evenly distribute the heat sounds like a good idea but it'd have to be the same diameter as the dish itself. The new heater retainer does work great with the Infiniti base instead of the small dish, though.

My Quartz Halo has arrived! It's the middle of my workday so I was only able to sample a couple dabs but so far I like it. First impression is the flavor is a bit different, maybe cleaner, and it does need high temps to vaporize the same as the SiC. I Q-Tipped the dish after and was able to clean all the visible residue off.

EDIT: Tried a few more dabs of different strains and am noticing a lot more flavour from the Quartz compared to the SiC and it tastes a bit cleaner too.

^^^ Ack, I forgot to Q-tip.

I have been running my Quartz Halo @~950* to burn it clean (works well).
My heat runner can get the QH up to high temps much more quickly and easily than the SiC dish (no surprise I suppose).

I'm running an RDK-200 for home and picked up an RDK-150 for travel.
I'm holding off on buying a slimline nail until the carb cap 2.0s are back in stock.
But at that point I will have two nails, no waiting, and will do some back to back taste test comparisons between the SiC dish and Quartz Halo.
I'm currently sitting on like 13 different varieties of concentrate!

@thegoo That sucks! I'm sorry to hear that it broke (especially so early in it's life).
You mentioned a that the fit of the nut was tight, mine slides in easily.
I hope D-Nail takes care of you.
Did you just finger tighten the coil/halo/nut assembly?
The Ti top and bottom will expand a bit.

@herbivore21 & @MileHighLife you are correct tweezers are a must for installing a painted Sapphire insert.
I have been using this method for dropping the Sapphire insert on the Ti retaining nut when "cold-dabbing".

Here is a little shot of the latest "painting":

That's the way brother! Tweezers are definitely a must, I would find some gold or even better zircon encrusted ones, you know the kind made famous by Frank Zappa (I kid I use 24c gold plated tweezers)? Also I've used one of my custom made jerry-rigged heat mantles to great effect to heat the sapphire insert a little so that even the most brittle non sticky shatter will stick down without boiling away :D

Since I'm dabbing on my broken sapphire (my replacement sapphire halo will be here in a matter of days) halo lately, I haven't used the insert really.

Yes, a cracked and chipped sapphire halo is better than a perfect SiC or Quartz one!

@herbivore21 when are those things going to be available to us plebes?
Not sure man, the problem is manufacturing is an extremely long process and it is a very high cost item to manufacture for reasons of both materials and machinery/labor, using advanced manufacturing techniques and accordingly careful QC procedures.

Honestly I think that it will be a fair while before these will be available to the masses. It takes somewhere in the order of 90 days to manufacture from order date IIRC.

If they do get released to public before advances in manufacturing technology take place, expect a very high price as the beta price was a negligible amount higher than d-nails cost. This is something being brought to market for the enthusiast/connoisseur and until the future is upon us and we bring the tek forward, this is gonna be a very expensive product. The vast majority of seasoned (pun intended) D-nail beta testers no doubt didn't have the money to get in on this beta round that was made available to them either.

I can't wait for the day that you guys get to own the sapphire halo though man! It'll be the end of quartz once they can get the manufacture time and price down (even just manufacture time would be a start so it can at least be made available to anyone who can afford it!). I'm confident of that. It already has been the end of quartz for me ;)

Hey does anyone have the 200 rdk and the 20mm Liger V2 and happens to know the temp coefficient for the 20mm Liger v2 with quartz insert....i dont have a IR Thermometer or thermocouple

I bet that it is very hot.

IIRC

The dnail chart that I looked at for the happy daddy genesis (which uses a flat coil, but is situated well below the sumlblimation head), had the temp @830*

I am ordering an enail this week, and after reading a lot, I think I am going for the D-Nail SiC dish, paired with a High5 Vape enail & flat coil. This seemed like the most affordable way to reach my goal of using the SiC.

- From my understanding, the only way to use the SiC dish, is by having a Ti nail for it to sit on. But is there anybody else that makes a SiC dish that doesn't NOT require it to sit on a piece of Ti?

- It seems flat coils are the way to go, am I missing anything?

- Other than never trying a SiC dish, I have always been a fan of Quartz. I really like quartz bangers, but I don't want to have to remember to remove coil every time to keep it from breaking. Do they make a quartz banger that works with a flat coil, since you only need to hear the bottom anyways? This would eliminate the need of removing the wrap around coil.

Thanks! Happy Turkey Day!

I really wouldn't worry about the titanium in the base, it makes up under 2 inches of the airpath and I doubt you'll be able to taste any difference. Currently there's no other material options for bases. Flat coil is your only option for the SiC dish.

They also sell a Quartz Halo which is the same size and shape as the SiC and you wouldn't need to remove the coil after use.

FWIW I'm able to achieve true convection dabs with the Errlectric Herb nail. I place the dab on a oil pad or bed of herb inside the Herb Nail Chamber. With the oil pad it really depends on the material as to what temperature I'm using. There is really no conduction going on with this method, since the dab never touches the heater.
@herbivore21
Also able to extract a small Herb load in one hit with the herb nail as well.

my sic halo is waiting for me at home!

do I need to do anything to season the nail or can I just start torching away?

also someone was talking about torching the halo dish in a very specific way, please give me any tips to help me use this nail to its full potential!

also I have the 710 whip. should I keep it electric if possible and save torching for emergencies? or

this is my first time with a nice nail and I'd like to take good care of it.

@heady blunts

Right on!

No need to season, just wash in ISO and rinse in water.

I would stick to electric when possible as it is easier to ensure one has consistent temperatures (even with an analog controller).

With regards to torching the SiC dish I don't think there is a special way one must heat the nail.
In fact, because of it's awesome thermal conductivity, you can just blast one spot on the dish and it should conduct the heat (fairly) evenly around the dish.

The few times I've torched my SiC dish I did move the flame around the dish.
But on the initial application of the flame you can see a "wave" of heat circling the rim of the dish.
Here is a page that has some cool temperature charts (there are a couple for torching as well): http://www.d-nail.com/info/science/http://www.d-nail.com/info/science/

I've heated for ~45-50 seconds and dabbed immediately, and that seems to be similiar to a home enail dab (which I do @ 627* on an RDK-200).

PRO-TIP: Make sure to just finger tighten the ceramic heating element on the 710 whip so as to account for thermal expansion.

PS I'm no pro.

Cool! I'm actually about to buy a D-nail with Lotus Adapter for the exact same purpose :) I'm curious which one is better for oil convection, but I'm going for the D-nail for a number of reasons. What kind of temps are you running? Also what kind of glass (I have to buy a rig too lol :)

Would love to hear more!:rockon:

thanks @alittledabwilldoya' ! I will follow your tips!

unfortunately d-nail shipped me only the halo and none of the slim series base pieces

I don't have any other bases so I guess it just has to wait in its tiny little box until they fulfill my order. I am sad.
That's disappointing! If you haven't already, shoot them an email to make sure it's coming, they may have just forgot.

I've been putting the Quartz Halo through some extensive "testing" over the last few days and it's still performing great. Q-tipping and heating to 970F is keeping it nearly spotless for the most part and I've been flame polishing (light, wide blue flame) to get any stubborn bits. I'm going to try to limit torching as much as possible to keep it in pristine condition, but haven't needed to do it much mainly just the top rim. The only negative I've come across is that the oil tends to ride up the side of the dish when the carb cap is on so I'm getting more residue buildup on the v2 carb cap. Not really an issue, just means I have to clean it more often than when using the SiC. Right now between the two I prefer the Quartz over the SiC but I'll revisit once I've used it more. I find it to be smoother and more flavorful for the most part, I think being able to keep it so clean is what's contributing to that.

they did send a swift reply to let me know they are closed for an extended holiday weekend which i appreciated.

i'm just mega bummed it's gonna be at least a week before i get to use my new nail, and my old banger is hardly enjoyable anymore, so i'm kinda without a rig for right now, which is kind of a huge problem.

i hope they'll refund me the expedited shipping i paid for (obviously useless if my order is incomplete).

if they give me a coupon for my next purchase i'd probably feel much better :D
