As an experiment I began drinking tea of this herb as my beverage during some vaporizing sessions. I had bought an ounce of it from one of the sites that sell ethnobotanical items and cacao (delicious). It looks like basic shrubbery, has a light sweet smell, and tastes like ass. It must be sweetened with honey or stevia to be palatable, and then it is. I must say that I enjoy its effect as an enhancement in late night vaporizing. The high is more hypnotic and more pronounced. Some minor audio hallucinations (distant echo from audio source, minor curiosity over direction of sound, etc.). Soon I would welcome sleep, it would overtake me. Music or whatevers on TV in the background shape and define the beginning dreams. Background media is experienced as a semi dream, as a disembodied presence, as I fell asleep. The dreams go off in many directions and are more tangibly dimensional and personal, there is some emotional awareness. Later a sudden awakening, then drift easily back to sleep. A sense of well being upon awakening that persists through the day.
There seemed to be more dreams through the sleeping event but memory of the dreams fade easy although impressions linger.
And other times there would be no discernible effect in the dream state, just a normal night's sleep, but always a relaxing enhancement to the vaporizing experience.
I put a bit of dream herb in a muslin bag, the same kind of bag used with log vapes, and let it seep in just boiled water in a glass pot for about 15 minutes, with honey or stevia added. Without sweetener it would be very bitter. I would sip on it between hits and would drink about three cups. Vaporizing makes me thirsty and tea is good for you and I like to try new things.
Calea Zacatechichi is reported still used by the Chontal Indians of Mexico to receive spiritual or divine messages while in the dream state.
Aside from the nausea and disorientation (reported occasional side effects with some users) which Ive not experienced, Ive not read anything to suggest that this herb could be damaging but there is little research, however its listed as a poison by the FDA. I dont think anyones ever died from it although it's conceivable that it could have an overdose potential, I don't know.
With this, I think it would have to be beneficial to put on something spacious and flowing like Alice Coltrane, Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar, Grateful Dead, etc., whatever does it for you, before falling asleep rather than falling asleep to the news.
These are all very subtle experiences - this is not a profound thing - but it's something that I've been enjoying particularly as an occasional vaping enhancement.
