MVT 2

If you look close there is a groove at about 2 o'clock. A fingernail can easily twist the dial using the groove.
Still not sure if it matters what side the dial is on. It is easy enough to put on either side but would be a pain to offer both. Personally i don't think it matters

Since the majority of the world seems to favor their right hand over their left I suggest holding the MVT as you would if your finger is on the button, then put the screw where it can be moved comfortably.

Of course, you would not want it in a spot where it would get moved accidentally.

@sickmanfraud thanks for the input. I am right handed but find it convenient to use the unit in my left hand but I do things in a contrary fashion so I need the testers to try it out. I only adjust the air flow a couple of times in a session and I think many will find their sweet spot and stick with it. Again the testers will have to supply input here. @paytonpenn and @WakeAndVape have agreed to test, thanks!
I am doing final adjustments to the test units, there are a few cosmetic things but they look good and work great. I'll post some pics soon.

These are prototypes and the finish isn't quite up to production standards but close. Just for cosmetics the porthole needs to come up a bit and the production models will be made from a solid piece.
For other wood types I might offer this design where two pieces are glued together just because there are a lot of wood varieties available in 1.5" square pieces so I could offer more variety.
Mainly we need to see what the testers think. If they feel the MVT2 offers something worthwhile then I'll do a beta run of a dozen or so at a discount and see where it goes. Watch this space.

Tracking numbers say the deliveries will be Saturday so hopefully we will hear by early next week!!!!!!

I've always been concerned about using wood glue for the frames, afraid the bound would weaken due to the heat. These prototypes were made with left over pieces so I had to glue the parts together and I'm happy to say they are holding up great. I've pushed the heaters on two of them and everything is fine.
That means that I can glue together other woods so I am planning some exotic frames.

@sickmanfraud certainly glue in the air path is not desirable. There won't be any. If you look at the earlier posts in this thread note the wood piece which holds the female joint, it also is the air intake and coil holder. So this part is fitted into the frame and the air comes in through the bottom. Any glued up pieces will be the outer frame. Note the glue line in the pics of the vape, it runs down the middle. That is where I envision the glue line remaining.
Sort of jumping the gun a bit, ordered some bocote, zebrawood and ebony today

tracking says the eagle has landed, with prototypes in hand the testers are hopefully enjoying their task and will tell us what they think soon. You all know I like the MVT2 but I'm jaded.
If the reviews are good I'll offer a limited beta pre sale, probably a dozen units.
Not going to do "a list", that was a nightmare last time.

so this is disappointing. @paytonpenn said he is not enthused with the MVT2 and uses it with the air flow wide open. This of course would mean there is no sense to have a valve.
@WakeAndVape had the insert to the valve fall out and it is lost. He did like the valve however, also felt it was similar to the MVT which it is.
The main difference is the button and the more comfortable shape. Adjustable air flow is something I personally really like.
I already ordered bocote, ziricote and zebra wood along with some ebony for trim. The plan is to go ahead and make a few frames with some of these woods and if anyone is interested I'll do a limited beta run.
If there is no interest I'll make myself a really nice unit and take a break, the vaporizer space is so crowded and I haven't figured out how to get past the FC market which is really small.

I have a suggestion. Instead of making works of art perhaps it would be better to give a wider audience a try before deciding on the valve or just the switch and cosmetic changes.

Pick 5-10 of your MVT customers to get a "good deal" on possibly the only units with a valve. I would suggest using scraps like in the earlier prototypes. You could give these 5-10 discounts on production models.

I would also brand these as Beta test units so we do not profit from your hard work.

I DO feel the valve is a worthy addition...I just wish the valve was made to be finger carbed, that would save on material and engineering possibly?

The button is nice too, it gives it a more familiar feeling, than with the touch sensor...I was never sure of the pressure required to get draws and I probably touched harder than necessary

I also noticed that with the added airflow it was easier NOT to char a load while pushing clouds out.

The improvements are very nice, but not night and day!

Once I find the adjuster I'll make some videos of it in action.

If I could magically make a change to it, it would be the size...it feels almost identical to the original touches size (even though its slightly larger)...but if it were smaller, it would be the most pocket friendly on demand convection unit out there.

But overall my thoughts on it are positive!

The size is very similar to the MVT,
width 2.5 versus 2.375", height 3.875 versus 4.375", thickness both 1.2"
so the MVT2 is slightly narrower and half an inch higher.
The corners are cut to a .375" radius, the MVT was a .25" radius.
@WakeAndVape if the air hole was flush with the side of the vape and not have a recess would that work.
I can send you a piece of maple that you can elmers glue on and it would give you a finger carb.

I have been experimenting with a new screen for the heater/joint assembly. Built a screen out of .003" SS but it only has holes around the perimeter, the center is solid. Acts like a heat shield to prevent radiant heat burns. I've been getting very even heating. I'll post some pics soon.

@mistvaporizer I don’t have a full understanding of the internals and how everything’s laid out, but I do have a small suggestion for you.

The placement of the airflow adjustment feels a little too close to the bottom edge to me, but more importantly it looks *almost* aligned with the hole above and the stem. Being so close to that line, I think it looks like it was intended to be in line but accidentally offset slightly.

Moving it into alignment *or* more out of alignment could eliminate that feeling. If there was a way to move it to the bottom, that could also work (but would make it more difficult to manually cover with the mod you mentioned or to adjust during use).

With that out of the way, I mostly want to say that you seem to have a well designed device that users I’ve heard from like, so I really hope that one of only 2 testers not being into a more restricted airflow doesn’t deter you from continuing to improve and produce what seems like a great device that you’ve put a lot of time and effort into!

I make films, and they haven’t all been fantastic, but I do seek feedback. I’ve had to get used to the fact that no choice I make will please everyone, and I have to do what I think is best (even when that means re-editing or re-shooting something after getting feedback that changes my mind).

Sometimes there’s a project that’s just not worth the extra time or a scene that needs to be cut, but the MVT2 doesn’t look like a project ready for the scrap-heap. If it’s not the best it can be yet and you solicit open and honest feedback from users then implement the changes that make the most sense to you, you may be surprised at how well it does and how many people want one, especially if you get a great beta version into some more avid posters’ hands.

Good luck with it, and whatever happens you can be proud to have developed a vaporizer that’s well regarded (if not well known enough yet) in the most knowledgeable and discerning group of herb vape users in the world. :)

I’m sure I’ll be checking this thread more in the future, so I hope to hear great things!

@VaporWare thanks for the kind words.
The vent position is dictated by the available space. See this post http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/mvt-2.28465/#post-1265957
The top side, http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/mvt-2.28465/#post-1259899, has a recess to hold the chimney. That piece has evolved to have 8 holes each 0.041" and three cross holes that connect all 8 holes then there is a .25" hole that connects from the bottom. The idea was to get even air flow around the perimeter of the coil.
Front to back placement of the air intake is dictated by this assembly, if I move it to the left I hit the electrodes and if I go to the right more than .2" I am off the part. It could be moved up to maybe .75".
The exotic woods land today so I be assembling the "sandwiches" over the next couple days. As I said if nothing else I want one. The new heat shield, I'll post later, is sweet. You have to sacrifice a bit of battery life but I think it is worth it. One thing I always tried to prevent was the hotspot that overheated one little spot of the herb. The heat shield gives more even heating.

Here are some pics of the heat shield
Hxrem6R.jpg

pQMqmSF.jpg

and in the vape
9fSjAe5.jpg

The holes are 0.04" dia and are only around the perimeter, the center spot is a dimple not a hole.
This prevents the radiant heat from charring the herb and forces the air to the sides of the stem which prevents the typical pattern of poorly heated herb around the perimeter.
I haven't tried to use this in an MVT but will do that later. Currently I make these by hand so it is a bit of a pain but I think I can automate the process some.
I'll get some pics of avb tonight.

Arghhhh the bocote came but it isn't good enough, one piece is ok and the other is devoid of nice grain. At least the zebra wood is good and I had some nice coco bolo on hand. For now I'll do zebra wood and coco bolo. Have the first sandwich in the press.
dcVaaiV.jpg

The blue panel is a steel press frame that takes a bottle jack. There are a couple hand clamps to snug up the ends that hang out of the press. The top piece is zebra wood the middle gabon ebony and the bottom coco bolo. When that is ready I'll trim it on the table saw so the zebra wood and coco bolo have about 3/16" thick slab of ebony glued on. Then I'll glue on a second piece of zebra wood or coco bolo and have a nice sandwich of zebra wood or coco bolo with a strip of ebony between. Thinking it will be sharp.
Edited this section to add the pics of the herb after a stir and re vape-
Here are some before and after pics

this is afghan skunk haze, the size is a bit coarser than I like but I was too lazy to work on that.
That was vaped in the MVT2 with the intake wide open and the new SS heat shield mounted in the heater assembly. I turned the stem multiple times but didn't stir. Then the third pic I stirred once and revaped.

Here is what the stem looked like

You can see how the heat is going to the edges and distributing evenly, the center is a bit under done. Maybe one vent hole in the center?

I like this a lot and am disappointed I didn't think of it earlier so the testers got them.

Had to try putting a hole in the center of the new heat shield and it is a good move.
I made a shield with 11 holes around the perimeter and one hole in the middle. All of the holes are .04" in diameter, about 1 mm.
I held the button in for longer than usual, I think it would have ignited with just a screen. Here is a stem no stirring.
9CGclNM.jpg

Just one extra hole in the center causes massive heat flow to the middle. I'm thinking of making the center hole smaller. Another approach is to move the holes in towards the center a bit, I'll have to try one of those.

Doing wood glue ups getting frame wood ready. Some zebra wood with nice grain and some stunning coco bolo. Should have pics by Monday.

Tried one with the holes around the perimeter but 1+mm further in from the edge than the original shield, did not use a center hole. This gives nice even heating.
The glue ups on the new frames is all done. Tomorrow I'll dimension the frame blocks, I'll try to post pics.

@mistvaporizer Those are certainly good reasons for the placement of the air intake adjustment, but I do have an alternative suggestion:

I’d still consider moving it up a little (unless it’s ergonomically better where it is), but more importantly how about a surface design element on the left to balance it out?

Maybe something like a curved arrow near the left side indicating how to use it?

I know it’s probably not necessary informationally, but if it’s placed right it could balance the dial out visually so it would look nicer and avoid the mis-impression that you’re not precisely placing things.

Another option would be a simple darkened indentation both making it easier to grip the dial and visually pulling the dial area back to the left.

You’d have to check out options yourself, but I’m pretty sure something along those lines would work.

If you’re not sure whether or not something will balance it, any graphic designer or artist should be able to give good feedback, or if you need to you can post mock-ups here and see what people think.

It looks like you’re making good progress with the heat shield too! I’m glad to see you pushing forward on it. It can take a lot to impress power users around here, but when you impress them they can be very helpful in getting attention. :)

So this is what zebra wood looks like

That is just with a quick wipe down with mineral oil, no wax sanding or polishing. The dark strip is a piece of ebony. The weird background is the patio table's tablecloth because I wanted to take the pic in daylight.
