Two kinds of people, as seen thru the eyes of FZ....this kind:

Frank Zappa - "Plastic People" - The Factory, February 13, 1969

I bought this double vinyl when it was released around '88... still have it and it's in mint condition cuz I moved on to primarily cds right about then... good stuff.

Edit: whoops! Just went down into the basement to double-check... it's this, the "sampler", released in April, '88:

And this:

Frank Zappa - Po-Jama People (Visualizer)

My first official copy of this was given to me as a holiday gift with about 5 other Zappa cds my would be then wife bought for me at the physical Rykodisc shop in Salem, MA (click the link, interesting bio about RD) around '93.... hell of a gal, and still is...! ❤️:peace:

Edit 2: 4 Zappa cds actually, I believe, and "Ziggy Stardust" and the Hendrix "Live at Winterland", too..,. It's hard to remember specifically, I was listening to so much music back then... and I moved on from cd many years ago now, so don't make me go down into the basement again and check...! Many of the boxes are slightly out of order... 😱

1973 - During a birthday party for Gong's Gilli Smyth in London, an inebriated Robert Wyatt fell from a fourth-floor window and broke his spine. Pink Floyd performed two benefit concerts in one day at London's Rainbow Theatre, supported by Soft Machine. He had begun drinking heavily while touring the US supporting The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Keith Moon introduced him to alternating shots of tequila and Southern Comfort.

1974 - Robert Wyatt released Rock Bottom, produced by Nick Mason and accompanied by Mike Oldfield, Ivor Cutler, Alfreda Benge, and various members of Soft Machine, Matching Mole, Henry Cow and Gong, including Hugh Hopper and Richard Sinclair who (along with Wyatt, Kevin Ayers and Brian Hopper) founded the The Wilde Flowers in 1964 and established the Canterbury scene.

Canna Chameleon

Muted by mods. Run off by rudeness.
1975 Pure Prairie League

Amie was their big hit, but if you grew up listening to the right station they only played these two songs together and in this order.

Robert Wyatt never liked the Canterbury label since he was born in Bristol and lived near Dover as a teenager, only going to school in Canterbury. Wherever it may be produced, "the real essence of Canterbury Sound is the tension between complicated harmonies, extended improvisations, and the sincere desire to write catchy pop songs". Some Soft Machine is not easy listening (especially their third album) but I hope that some members will appreciate the Canterbury tale I have told on this page. Beyond 1975 the Canterbury sound faded, and after Robert Wyatt left Soft Machine and Daevid Allen left Gong those bands continued to produce 'jazz rock'.

I learnt piano as a child and only listened to classical music at home. Popular radio held no interest, until I heard Hocus Pocus by Focus in 1973, closely followed by Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. Eyes and ears now opened, I searched local record stores for anything resembling 'progressive rock'. There are some names that stand out for me as creative genius, including Daevid Allen, Robert Wyatt, Fred Frith and Robert Fripp, and many of my favourite albums have their input or influence. True creative genius is not a flash in the pan, and these artists have consistently created inspired and inspiring music throughout their long careers.

I have generally preferred British music, but Frank Zappa and Don van Vliet are both quite remarkable talents.

Among the pantheon of creative genii, there is Brian Eno. I lose interest in Roxy Music without Eno, but their first album is a classic. And Baby's on Fire (on his own classic Here Come the Warm Jets) with Robert Fripp's soaring guitar is an all time favourite.
