Mist Herbal Vaporizer

I had an earlier version tested but the vapor production was too low. The new version is much more powerful and a little larger (see the website for dimensions). One feature of the MistVape is that all the components are non toxic, wood, titebond glue, ROHS compliant electronics, lead free solder and brass, high quality quilted maple finished with food grade mineral oil, flaxseed oil and beeswax.
I plan on shipping the two units for concentrate testing tomorrow. I have eight more units that I am assembling now and hope to finish by the end of Nov. Currently I am hand soldering the boards but at least the board blanks for the MistVape were produced by a professional board shop. The charger I am still etching the boards myself.
btw I had to change the name to MistVape since there was an air freshener that trademarked mist and the trademark office said my unit was too similar (because of claims of aroma therapy and herbal vaporization).
thanks for looking

the concentrate testers have their units and are testing now. One tester had some nice comments but it is early. I'll let everyone know what they think when the results are in.

ok the tests are in and there is work to be done. The mist got the best reviews it ever has but it fell way short of other units out there. The good news is some great issues were addressed. Seems the airpath is all wrong. Some early tests seemed to show a lot of promise with redirected airflow. check paytonpenn's u tube video
he adapted it with a stem and got pretty good vapor production. I'm working now to fix the airpath issues.

used the new model with a battery last night, worked great. Don't know how long the battery will last at the new higher temperature but I expect it will be respectable. When I test battery life I'll post the results

Wow full 180 flip to convection, glad to see it per our last talk. Impressed it was possible (if anyone can figure out, its @paytonpenn!)

It may be important to ensure the efficiency is maximized in the switch, that its not wasting any heat or energy in the conduction to convection transition. The battery tests could reveal a lot, though Payt seems to think size and design make this a better plug in unit?

Seems like it is a radiant heat/convection unit now. I mounted the burner with minimal contact so it doesn't conduct too much heat to the frame of the unit. if you look at the pic of the burner it shows it mounted to a piece of wood, there is a thin layer of high strength plaster that locks the burner to the wood. Then that piece of wood is mounted in the frame. So the only wasted heat is what is transmitted from the mounted edge of the burner to the wood. The wood doesn't conduct the heat that well so it seems to work pretty good. As I get some units made and tested I can modify as needed.
I can't say that paytonpenn said it was a better unit but he liked the even heating and simplicity of use. Of course the unit he tested didn't produce enough vapor and the effect was a little weak. With the changes I definitely notice it is much more potent. I didn't get what people meant when they said it wasn't strong enough until this version, after I used the new version I knew exactly what everyone had been saying. The last MistVape was like drinking beer, the new model is like doing shots (if you'll excuse the alcohol analogy).

The design for holding the burner in place was flawed and it works but it won't last long enough to be a good design. 'the heater needs a redesign.
Also tried a bare coil design. It shows promise. The coil slides into the bottom of the stem. I'll post pictures later today.

Here are some pics
http://www.mistvaporizer.com/bareCoil.aspx
One experiment went to ignition and the second showed charred material on the surface and green beneath
This shows some promise, it generates a lot of heat but the way the thermocouple is set up it didn't regulate the heater and it got too hot. I am rethinking the thermocouple set up. Also not sure if the coil should be positioned in the stem or just outside the stem.

Got some feedback today on the model I posted on earlier http://www.mistvaporizer.com/newmodel.aspx
"very good right now...extraction is there, I get way better vapor than the video shows"
The video is here youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=EDvYyk8_wc4 and there will be more to come I'm told.
Seems like this design may get the MistVape to prime time.

you got anyone else testing besides Payton? Nothing personal, but looking for someone elses input.

Got some feedback on battery life. One user got approximately 25 minutes on the high setting.

Not too bad, is an hour reachable using just low settings? Plus its got the PA for pass through power anyhow right? So unlimited at home?

I haven't done a lot of battery testing so I'm not sure how long you can get at the lower settings. Yes it runs on AC adapter so unlimited at home, also we will make spare battery packs available so you could have one or two spares if you need extended battery time.

Video was intended to be longer but my phone started to die, so I will have to do high temps later.

I consider the temp I was on as low temp, I am normally on yellow or at least dark green. Skip to 8:48 if you want to see thicker vapor from higher temps.

Original video was 25 minutes long and I used battery for a couple bowls beforehand. I am still just turning the unit on to test battery but it definitely can do 40 minutes on the lowest temp I used.

That is not my normal usage, I use this vape like my FW and grassHopper, just flip it on and press start, turn off after a hit or after a few. Then get back to the bowl later if I didn't kill it in those 1-4 hits.

EDIT:
Looks like its done on the battery, I was on idle for 2 and half hours plus the usage from the video. While on idle it was started for a heat cycle and during the heat cycles blown into a few times. At least 10 heat cycles were done after the video.

Just a note, the unit in the video is an early version of this style. The heater assembly is fastened to the wood with plaster. It wasn't that great of a solution. Now the heater assembly is held down with screws and is much more durable. I'll post some pics on that soon.
Used the MistVape with a small load at the minimum heat setting, that worked great for me. I hit it almost immediately after I turned it on and got vapor from the first hit. Maybe having a blue ready light is not needed. This will be something to address with testing. The cost of the light is trivial but it is always best to simplify.

Shipping another unit to be tested. Just got some feedback from a second tester and it was very positive. I've asked them to post something here. Currently have three testers working with the mistvape and a fourth to be added this week. Looking like the latest design is good.

I had a chance to try out the new beta mist yesterday. Although it will be a direct draw device, I didn't have access to a proper stem, so I just used it on a 14mm glass GonG stem in my bub. Vapor was achieved easily on the first try, so there wasn't any learning curve at all.

The heater maintains a tight tolerance of +/-5°C of set temp in idle mode from (from my own testing), so that was impressive to me. I look forward to seeing what the final design looks like and how it performs.

:peace:

So I just received a beta unit to test, already been though too many bowls to say too much right now probably... But first a dry Underdog stem, nice little session with a pinch but gets harsh for me with visible vapor but I haven't tried the low temps yet...

Now had another dry session but then switched to 14mm UD shorty GonG though new FC-Mod small showerhead perc. Still getting the hang of draw rate but the heater seems to know how to keep up so yeah doing its job... Playing with different amounts, not riding temps too much just yet so I'll talk about them another time.

Anyway yeah so far it's like a little hadmade convection desktop wooden box, that can also be used portably with batteries somehow (I'll have those later). As an AC unit its pretty neat actually, very lightweight and doesn't seem to get very hot as of now. It's kind of log like, but with temps and sessions heating, less heavy and a little box of course.

Overall so far this early its very interesting to say the least... and this is a beta so its form and other things could be tweaked, especially considering it just made the jump from conduction to convection quite well (thanks @paytonpenn for helping with that!). Looking forward to testing the MistVape more this week

EDIT raised the temp a bit, getting big cloudy hits though the showerhead now, fairly smooth and tasty. I don't know what temps I've been at bc I'm not positive where the baseline is to judge. Probably 360-420 or something? :ko:

EDIT2 too many bowls since my first 3-4 hours ago, I'm done for the night. Not bad for a first night of unscientific testing watching TV... I just had it on green standby and then hit start for it to heat up (orange) to go to blue to start the 5min session (it goes orange when drawing sometimes too, I guess that's overpowering it but it still works well and seems to keep up ok? Not Evo caliber but I think we'll for its size?). I take about 3-4 hits in this time depending how big they are, one session I only had like one big distracting one. I'm basically using it like a session log box, keeping the stem separate (well now in the bubbler anyhow). Now at the end of the night's session, the back of the box near the heater is quite hot, but the rest is still cool, no reason you'd touch the back like that anyhow, though I'm also not near max temp (620 for concetrates). Will experiment more tomorrow, with lower temps as well, hopefully more scientifically too, but it passed the basic zonk test so far...

So unfortunately I haven't gotten to spend as much time with the Mist as of late, but it still impressed me how it can keep up in the several sessions following the first one above). Had some good sessions with other extremely heavy smoker and super light sober users that both got way too stoned from it, so that is always a good sign!

I then lost my UD straight stem and short GonG which slowed me down, but now I have two of Mist's own long straight stem with 14mm GonG (they even have a small plain glass tip after the GonG which makes for a very nice dry mouthpiece) so I have gotten to use dry a few more times and through water too, even the same bowl now.

I have a lot more testing to do at various temps and now with the battery pack I received as well, but this beta continues to surprise and impress me with each use. Even tried a bowl amidst various Lily, Zion, and Evo bubbler bowls at one point over the weekend and Mist actually had me coughing the most bc i wasnt prepared for the size of the first hit at not even that high of a temp through water... It can be a bit harsher in general but it certainly comes with power to match

A redesign of the body for the new convection stem-bowl style is imminent I believe, so its still got a bit to go, but just as is the vaporization technology at play here is quite effective today the least for now

I don't know what the final price will be, but the design is changing. It was originally conceived as an MFLB desktop but now that it's made the switch to convection it is more like a log session box with battery packs. Even the very rough beta I have is actually much nicer in person than I had expected, especially in use as functionally it is quite effective.

Regardless I feel $500 is too much for any one vape and I would never pay it myself :2c: only have an Evo because of how far they fell
