I am constantly experimenting with my mV. I generally take the cover off to heck the basket temp with my fingers after every other draw. This really helps to monitor different techniques.
Regarding low temp tastes:
The miniVAP is supremely accurate on not going over temp. The red temp is 230 C or 446 F. If it was going temp over at all, there would be combustion and I can't recall anyone here ever getting combustion.
I am saying those are definitely not slight combustion flavors at lower temps.
IMO, my first few hits at lower temps release the lightest of light terps, the ones that taste like you shot warm air over a lemon drop and then inhaled. Superb taste going in under the tongue and incredible flavor exhaling over the tongue. Then, at the same low temps after more draws the lightest/ lowest temp vaporizing terps are gone and the next ones are a different animal. They have a bite, a sharpness, a tang, a tartness that could come across as in the realm of smoke.
Then at green, these tart terps are getting depleted and some fuller tasting terps come out to play.
These hits at green are almost easier to inhale straight draw then the end of pink, until you get to appreciate the tart terps.
FYI, mV really likes long pulls, not too short and not too powerful. FYI, a long steady proper airflow pull at pink temp will get the wire basket (and herb) hotter ( clearly up to the set temp) than a " not so proper" draw on green temp.
