Magma and Obsidian Volcano Bubblers

Everybody still digging their bubblers? Been using the Volcano every once in a while when I want something more stoney than a dab.

Kinda curious about this one. Been running my Classic at 6 with an XL bag; honestly not sure I'll like the flavor of higher settings to warrant the use of it though.

We usually extract as much of the herb as possible at the lowest temp to preserve the flavor profile. It's only at the very end of the session do we turn the Volcano all the way up to 9 on our Classic so that we're sure we've extracted all of the actives from the herb. We don't expect much flavor preservation by that point, though...

Gave my parents one for Christmas and I had the opportunity to use it for a little while.

I have some pros and cons for the Magma.

First, it absolutely cools and adds moisture to the vapor very effectively. Could definitely tell that the vapor was easier on the lungs, especially at high temps. So the unit performs exactly as advertised.

Now to my cons with my limited use with it.

The volume of water in the bubbler is VERY SMALL. It's so small, that sometimes by the end of a large bowl, enough water had evaporated from the the bubbler so the water was no longer covering the perc. I started adding almost twice the recommended amount of water to lengthen the time between refills. I did not notice any downsides to this yet.

My other con, is that your bags start to retain moisture. After a session, you can see some water condensing in the bag. Not a big deal on it's own, but I was worried about possible mold/bacteria growing in the moisture rich area when the bag wasn't in use.

To circumvent that, at the end of the night, I'd make sure to do the last half a bowl without the bubbler. That way the heat from the unconditioned vapor would dry the inside of the bag. It seemed to work, I could definitely get the bags dry.

So overall, not sure I'd use one all the time since I don't find the vapor of the Volcano to be too harsh to begin with. But I did enjoy it.

For those looking to condition the vapor from the Volcano, this absolutely works and fits the bill. The vapor is noticeably cooler and more humid. Coughing is much less likely..

@Magma_Industries what do you all do to prevent moisture buildup in the bags when not in use? How long do you typically go before refilling the bubbler?

Hey Roth,

Thanks for the write up and questions! You are correct, both Magma and Obsidian take a very small amount of water in order to operate. Magma was designed to have this amount of water to help reduce water reversal due to back pressure, however this was NOT an issue with Obsidian (because of the secondary chamber water-trap) so it holds roughly twice the amount of water. It should therefore double the amount of time before you need to refill it during a long, hot, session. As long as water does not splash into your bag (and this isn't actually a big issue, just annoying) you can add as much water as you like without any downsides.

You are correct again that the bag will start to condense moisture during use. This is due to the relative humidity being ~100%, and thus water will condense on ANY surface that is cooler than the vapor. Unfortunately, this includes the inside of the bag, and I don't think there is any practical way to prevent this. If anyone has any ideas I'm open to testing them out for everyone! In the mean time, however, you can definitely aid moisture dissipation by adding warm air to the bag (ie filling it without the bubbler) and then leaving the bag on the Easy Valve. This final step keeps the flaps open and allows the moisture to dissipate into the room. This will happen naturally, but filling the bag with warm air first will accelerate the dissipation. My bag is usually clear within 30-60 min after the session, and I've been using the same bag for over a full year now.

Otherwise thank you for your kind words and fair review!

Cheers!

Good idea about leaving the bag on the valve to keep the flaps on the bag open, will have to mention that to them! We/they usually use personal bags, so there are lots of bags going around. But there are a couple extra bowls to help keep bag flaps open....bag flaps, that doesn't sound great.

And to be clear, when I said I wouldn't use it all the time, it's mainly because I'm a dry guy. I don't use water when using my ShowerHead or dabbing from my banger. Just give me that straight uncut vapor!

But for those that like their vapor water conditioned and use the Volcano, the Magma/Obsidian really is a no-brainer.

Since you're looking for input, I'll just say that I wish that it (Magma) allowed for more sessions without needing to constantly add water. There isn't a lot of room currently between "not enough" and "too much" water and I find that I need to add water every couple of bags which is kinda a pain.

I love the product but just wish I could not have to attend to water levels so much. It's tough to do when you're high as fuck!:ko:

Hey Stu,

Thanks for the feedback! We've definitely heard this critique and request for a larger capacity before. It was a bit tricky to try and apply it to the original batch of the Polymer Red units, as after we placed our original order we were kind of stuck with that geometry until we could re-design for a larger capacity. So unfortunately we don't have a solution readily available for the original Polymer units.

Thankfully, with that said, we make all of our Borosilicate units in small batches and by hand, which allows for a far greater range of design iterations and refinements. We've focused on incorporating this feedback into the glass models with what I can only assume is success, as I haven't had a single criticism regarding water volume. You can fit approximately 1.5-2x the amount of water in our glass units, and they have a much larger range between "not enough" and "too much". If you're interested, DM me and I'll see what I can do to help get a boro model on your Volcano so you don't have to worry about water during your sessions :)

I figured it out! Took me long enough, ha! Without further adieu:

Stu that is very interesting.. I will need to pay attention when I have my next session as I have not needed to add water so far. Granted I only use 2 full bags per session.

Hey Silat,

You should be good to go with that kind of use during a session, as the water level only drops enough to notice after multiple chamber loads, or like 45min-1hr of continuous use. But let us know what you see!

Hi everyone.
I just received the lovely Obsidian.

It is brilliant. It makes the volcano much better, and though I hesitated to purchase it, I am glad I did.

In the UK I was hit with a £30 import duty on top of cost from Magma. With postage I was around £50 more in total than the cost, and yet I still would say it was worth every penny.

Only thing troubling me is that I have one ring, (the small one) that fits perfect, but Ideally there is about 5 or six rings extra with it.(Sadly there isnt, so better not drop and lose the little ring :-()
Also it would be simple to make a small , (drying stand), for after I have used it to let the water in bag dissipate, and that would be great if it was included.
I know I can use the chamber to keep the flaps open but its often still got bud in it and its a wee bit hassle emptying etc .If I had something else to dry on and keep flaps open , that would be perfect.

Anyone thinking about buying?
Do it!

Hey Dax,

Thanks on your recommendation! We have replacement O-ring sets available on our website if you need extra, and we'll keep in mind your desire for a drying stand. We have some ideas in mind, just need to work them out so they're ready for you guys to use out of the box :)

Cheers!

All units ship with everything you need! While all our units will work with the Hybrid whip, it was designed for the bags. Luckily they are the same connector, so it should fit the same as the bags. We personally prefer the bags if we had a choice, but it works just fine with the whip as well.

sounds good. i ordered one. I will experiment and figure out the best whip pieces to use, im thinking it will work better connecting a 14 to 14 female to the top of the obsidian and then use the hybrid whip with a 14 mm male water piece adapter into that

There should be no need, all of our glass pieces have a custom ground female joint taper to properly mate to the easy valve herbal chamber, and the make joint is a standard 14mm ;)

We use the whip with Obsidian all the time, and even though we don't prefer it over the bags, it still works very well! We have a couple of function videos and slo-mo's (which are AWESOME btw lol) over on our instagram @Magma_Industries if you want to give it a look!
