L shaped side by side mod box enclosure

Vape swap shop
Splinter and stempods are now out in the wild. Whats the biggest downfall with a 510 vape? Size. Especially height, its not really pocket sized in my opinion. Recently i brought a iheat and witcher mod. This Side by Side (SBS) setup makes for a truly pocket sized mod. It really is fantastic. However iheat is the only vape thin enough to fit. IMO the community need a SBS mod that will fit all the current 510 vapes on the market.

I have had a 1st attempt at this. Brought a DNA 75C board and tried to CAD myself a enclosure (alter an existing design). My cad skills where not up to the job to be honest, never tried it before. The idea being i could get this 3D printed. Overall most DNA enclosures are also pretty large, and after buying a standard case deiced it was never going to be small enough. My idea died for a while.

Then i came across this:

https://www.stealthvape.co.uk/dick-butt-hurricane-raptor-version-4-v4

This kit above seems fairly simple, and i think with some basic soldering skills anyone should be able to put it together. This board fits in a hammond 1590g which is only 5cm wide. So all we need to do is alter a standard 1590g case to make it L shaped. The Leg of the L would hold the 510 fitting. This case could be 3D printed once we have the design cadded in the correct format. I hope the same kit is available in the US.

Some sizes for the current 510 vapes:

Iheat 24mm x 57mm
Splinter 32mm x 55mm (old model)
Stempod 26mm x 45mm (i believe - will confirm soon mine is in the post).

So my thinking is the leg of L would need to extend 35mm from the box. Making the new box 85mm total. 1590g is 100mm tall. So thinking the Leg of the L would 45mm height, making a splinter level with the top of the box. I am working on a marked up drawing which i will post later.

My intention is we pool our resources and help make this happen! I dont want to sell these, and if someone does then good for them all i want is a SBS mod that does the job.

The first step is getting the design cadded in the right format for 3D printing. Can anyone help with this? Should be fairly simple to do. Below is thingyverse files for a 1590g enclosure.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2519056

Does anyone have any comments or ideas to add?

I like the ideal. Really it's the enclosure and deciding on what chip to use that is hardest part. Do we want keep price down and use a cheaper chip? Personally I rather use a DNA250c but that alone will add 70-80bucks.

I love to do this in wood but that would increase bulk size.

Are you more thinking something along this look?

9cae5c_05bf9b2080ad42949123bce7e64614dc~mv2_d_5312_2988_s_4_2.jpg

Personally something that for travel be nice wouldn't put a dna250c in it thou. It's too small maybe a dna75 instead.

I sorta like the design of the Golem for a 2 battery mod. Has more room to house the 250c and screen. Could see it made outa wood. It's bigger but looks like a nice shape.

Picked up on of these for 10bucks to mess with for iheat.

Good idea

I was hoping to find a bigger ingnition base kind of adapter to use in a similar way to basically adapt any box mod to an SBS configuration
https://www.fasttech.com/product/1945801

I was also thinking you could use a 26650 DiY squonk box as a starting point and position the 510 connector so the Splinter or Modpod sits where the bottle would go if you were building a squonker
Like this one
https://www.stealthvape.co.uk/elect...0-18650-battery-boxes/MODCRATE-FRAME-RAW-PLUS
Or start with a dual 26650 enclosure and cut a couple of windows or drill out some holes for the airflow to the coil, to create a more enclosed setup.

Can anyone CAD this for 3D printing?

Sorry for the delay - took a while to work out how to post images after the imgur problems. Tinypic seems good.

I really like this idea. Usually the simplist way is best. Got a blank of african blackwood. Also have a 510 connector coming. Just need the other end that screws in the 510 connector. Think this might be the way i go. Want to spend the least amount possible on this idea.

I would like to be involved in this but I’ve no experience with electronics or design, I can only help contribute in buying parts for prototyping

I got to busy and forgot to get into this. I use CAD for 3-D drawings as I don't need them in my field typically. I can draw it in CAD and send you a .dwg file, however if you need more than that I may not be the right guy. That may be better suited for someone like @invertedisdead

Let me know what you think. To create a .dwg file of what you provided would take me about 30 minutes or less so its not a big deal for me to do it. I should be able to get a chance tomorrow.

I dont think autocad is the right format for 3D printing. However after recieving a stashpod with my stempod i am not impressed with the quality of 3D printing. Really poor - and not something i want to own.

I think this is the way we should go. Got a female 510 connector and looking for a suitable male connector. I could just buy the adapter from fastech and take it to bits. The adapter in its standard state wont be long enough for most mods. Before i press the button anyone know of a good quality male 510 connector we could use?

Using something like this would mean you have to use your mod upsidedown. Is this a big problem?

Admin: could you change the title of this thread to - Mod box SBS adapter?

@oddjobold : it's really process-dependant. FDM is indeed usually pretty poor, but other pricier processes give much better results (ex: SLA, SLS etc)

Good to know. However i think the simplest soultion is the best. Thats why i think an adapter might be a better idea.

I'd rather have a SBS mod than an adapter personally. Also I don't think you'll find good 510 connectors on Fasttech. Check modders sites instead.

Not sure how many mods have the battery door in the right place or room inside to thread a wire thro to perform the mod but defo scores points for thinking inside and outside the box (mod), if you ask me :)

Yes. the only reason that I don't have a splinter or a stempod is because their size makes them conspicuous. It's obviously not like the nicotine ejuice tanks most people have attention to their mods, and people (and law enforcement) are more alerted that you may be doing something "sinister".

Might have found someone that could make the enclosures.

So i'm trying get a ideal who would be interested in this. Plus need a design plan on how things need to be positioned.

I would like use the DNA75c chip for this. Hoping to keep cost under 150.00 but would depend on cost of enclosure. I think theres also a discount if I bought 10 chips. Other option would be a regular DNA75 or maybe even the DNA60.

This will be a collectors item not a for profit deal. So should be able to keep price point low.

Basically thinking something along milaana / lil bud size. But instead of where the heater is they be the 510 connection with area above removed.

Figure make it large enough to hold a splinter. Use a single battery maybe in a battery tube design. The DNA chip is long so need figure where we can place it. Can't really use a battery door like the lil bud cause chip will need that space.

Unless we did chip on the side like pictured below.

img-6643_1_orig.jpg

I'm not super keen on that ideal we could also use a battery tube with screw in lid. Something like below. Just with battery between chip and 510.
img-7277_orig.jpg

If we use a battery tube be something like this but in wood with the DNA chip same spot as the chip pictured.

In my opinion size is key here. After all thats why we are trying to make something like this in the first place!

Well done for pushing this idea foward.

What have i been doing? Well i recieved a P.A.M. from Ryan the other day. I had a evic cubiod with a broken 510 connector. My idea was to hardwire the P.A.M. in to the circuit board. It all went a bit wrong, and was a lot more difficult than i first thought. Think the already broken mod is now a write off. Was very difficult to solder in to the board, not really got the right tools. Idea scrapped.

New idea. I am going ahead with the adaptor idea. I have been getting some parts together. Looking at RDAs to use as the male end. Already have a female 510. Going to make 2. One with a 510 female connector and 1 for the P.A.M. Brought some forstner bits, need one more. I have one blank of african black wood, but need 1 more blank. I hope this is more whitin my skill level. Should be fairly easy.

Ill post more when i have had some sucess, ill share the design (if it works). So far not had a great deal of sucess with these things!

@oddjobold: hey mate, I know you started the thread but would it be possible please that you start another one for that SBS adapter/plate project? This way we can keep this thread solely for our custom SBS mod endeavor.

As I said previously, I'm not much interested in a plate adapter. It would mean having the mod upside down and I don't think the end result would be stealthy enough for my needs. Plus if we want it to look pretty it would have to be made for a given mod+atty combo only, as there's too much variation in mod shapes and attys dimensions.

That being said, the atty diameter variation is also a concern for the SBS mod. You see, my iHeat is thinner than a StemPod, somewhere like 23.4mm or around (I'm not at home so I'll have to check later, but clearly above 23mm) but other members' units are reportedly wider than the StemPod. There are also larger iHeat variants (at least in theory, don't know if any were really sold) using a glass female joint. Then we seem to have a large amount of variation with the Splinter(Z) and Ryan doesn't seem to be trying to make them very consistent as there is variation from batch to batch on top of that.

So this is a concern because if we try to match the largest common denominator, we'll end up with a mod that is too large and with a lot of gap when fitted with smaller attys. I'm afraid it will look unsightly.

I'm very interested in this project, in fact I've been talking about this idea in many threads since a long time now. But as it is now, I'm happy with the Project Pure SF inside the SmoAnt Knight v2. I intended to make a SBS mod for my iHeat but now that I got the confirmation that it's not my mods that are crappy but rather the iHeat 510 base itself, I'm a bit reluctant (testing the iHeat on the Steam Engine DNA75 was a total disaster, even worse than when it was on the evic Primo mini)

And I don't think I'll be getting a Splinter anytime soon (I got two Zions and a Milaana, plus all parts Ryan sent me for the DIY RBT thread...and honestly I think the Splinter is too fat and he keeps making them fatter it seems) Then finally most of my custom 510 attachments are under 23mm and fit in regular SBS mods, excepted the Kennedy 24.

So in the end I don't know if that makes any sense, apart from enjoying making another DIY project. If the mod is to be dedicated to a single atty, then it would be much better to get rid of the 510 port altogether.

Nonetheless to get the ball rolling I started discussing what we could use as the base chipset at the bottom of this post >> http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/w...nvection-510-vapes.25465/page-10#post-1298363

The eLeaf Pico Dual is $25 shipped and I think we could port myevic/tuboevic to it. We would be better with a MCU we can fully reprogram vs a DNA board where we're stuck with escribe and can't add any new feature. $25 is also much cheaper and we would be able to re-use parts of the Pico too.

I gathered quite some links and ideas over the time, and regardless whether it will really come to fruition for me or not, I think it's better to share them here with you, a bit like a message in a bottle thrown in the sea...

@KeroZen. You can total take over this thread if you want.

My first adapter will be hardwired in to a P.A.M. The 2nd in to a 510 conector. I got all the bits for the first, and everything except the wood for the 2nd.

See you on RBT open source.

Oh no, now you make me feel bad like I ousted you from your very own thread! That was absolutely not my intent. :\

But I don't get what the PAM is then. Doesn't it contain any electronics? I assumed it was kinda like a Zion body with a 510 connector.

Hm so we can hook a PAM directly to a DNA board? That's interesting. I was fooled by the IG pictures @Summer re-posted as they showed a 3DP Zion-like box and I assumed this was the PAM... with a Splinter screwed into it.

Thanks for the clarification mate!

@KeroZen, when Ryan used the PAM in his stream he connected the positive & negative leads to a battery (via battery clips) that is connected to a controller that shows volts & wattage. I guess something like a PID? :shrug:The PAM is on the website. Zion $400; PAM $59.

Edited to add:
Essentually, it's a Splinter with leads.
