Sounds like you're livin the dream up there! I would if I could. Though my girlfriend started following the news more. I recommended against it, but also realized after maybe a year of that, she'll buy into my plan to run away to the mountains.
Unfortunately the majority of people won't be able to do it. We need people working at those restaurants and Amazon Warehouses (filled with shit made in the countries we shipped our manufacturing base to). That's also what the "back to the office" push is about. There's a whole economy there to support, from commercial real estate to restaurants that rely on expensed fancy lunches.
During the height of the "nobody wants to work anymore" hysteria, I kept hearing people talking about how this country was "founded on hard work". Yeah, but for yourself. Not for multinational corporations. The Founders' vision was smallholder farmers working for themselves on their own land. Not corporate serfs. And not only for people with wealthy parents.
Any time there was too much pressure building up in the industrialized east, the government would open a valve and just start offering Free Real Estate in the frontier. That was a building block of this country for 2/3 of its existence. What's the secret....
I think that's why Cali has always been a little wacky. That's where the Free Real Estate ran out. You can stare out over the Pacific and see the literal end of America. We never really came to terms with what kind of country we wanted to be after the Free Real Estate ran out.
