I don't know if it's that direct. But you point to the central problem with the Democrats. They represent their rich donors first and foremost. It's not that they don't want to win. They're just ok with losing because their rich donors will get tax cuts under Republican rule.

I forgot how well Bernie Sanders was polling in the summer of 2016. He was running 12 points ahead of Trump nationally. Hillary was only ever 2 points ahead. You can say "polls are always wrong", but the national polls were correct. Hillary ended up winning the popular vote by 2 points.

In 2016, Bernie would've had a Reagan '84 landslide. Voters in 2016 were always going to reject the "establishment". Either Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders were going to win and transform American politics for the next 50 years. And the Democrats decided it should be Donald Trump.
