Using humidity packs is not necessary.
Unless you want hassle free hydrated buds that keep for months and months.
In the past I've used fan leaves, apple or orange peels, but humidity packs work better.

Unless you are an expert- I STRONGLY ADVISE NOT TO STORE IN FREEZER!!!!
In theory, it works wonderfully and will provide arguably the best method of preservation.
In reality, people that do not have a great understanding of plants and moisture tend to RUIN their buds by putting in the freezer. If you go down this road, one better fucking know how to deal with moisture from your buds and have a plan for keeping the molds and rot out.
IMO for noobs, advise airtight, no light, dry storage. You can always add moisture later with a boveda and not have worry of mold.

but I read somewhere the trichomes fall off if you freeze and its not really recommended. I heard about the orange peels and I tried it once with some herb that was very dry and white stuff started growing on it, I still have it but i am planning on throwing it away because I have no clue what those white things are.

It depends.
For example, the article @darbarikanada might be useful if you're saving it for a very long time. But, short-term use where you're pulling the jar in and out of the freezer every day is not going to keep the flower at a high-quality level. (It will probably get wet/mouldy from condensation and you might get more kief if the trichomes are more likely to snap from the cold.)

After drying and curing, I store my bud in a cool dry dark cupboard in vacuum sealed mason jars that include an oxygen pack and a bodeva pack. The oxy pack may be overkill but when I open the jars and hear the whoosh as the vacuum seal breaks and the oxy pack inside remains soft, I am reassured that my bud is being held in optimal conditions.
I've kept bud for several years with no evidence of deterioration. I also use this approach with all manner of dehydrated produce from the garden. Cheap, easy and effective method.
I use a Food Saver mason jar sealer. You need the vacuum and the lid attachment for a regular or wide mouth Masson jar.

I leave mine in mason jars lol in my basement bathroom that isn’t too warm or too cold.

I personally use a Re:stash jar with a boveda 58% pack. It is basically an overprice mason jar with a silicone sleeve, but the company is awesome.

I use C-Vaults, with Boveda Packs as well as oxygen eater packs (I don't remember the brand of the oxygen eaters), and I keep them in an area of the house that always stays the coolest.
Light, Heat, and Oxygen are the terrible killers that degrade your herb. Control/Limit those, and your herb can last years.
Oxygen is some nasty volatile shit for real. It degrades everything it comes in contact with.
It once killed off 99% of the life on this planet, and it was responsible for Earth's first massive extinction. It's such a reactive chemical.

If the weed is fully cured, fill the jar, add bovida pack (and I like the idea of the O2 absorber) and keep cool.
Freezer is okay, without bovida packs, but three downsides: freezer space; humidity is created, and gets into the jar, by taking weed in and out of freezer; and trichomes do get more brittle, much falls off, and much of the trichomes that fall off stick to the side of jar.

I agree with what @Brewervapesalot said above, about the freezer making your trichomes fall off. Is no bueno. No need for freezer.
As little empty space full of air as possible is best...due to what I said about Oxygen being a nasty little degrader. However, as long as you are using humidity control (Boveda packs is what most of us use for that), it really depends on how long-term you plan to store. If we are talking about a few months or less, then your quarter-full jar will be ok. If we are talking about much longer than a few months, then a proper-size jar that leaves less room for extra air is better, and using oxygen-absorber packs along with your Boveda packs is best.
Basically, the ideal storage is in a airtight and lightproof container, with as little empty-space as possible in the container, with humidity control packs and oxygen absorber packs, in a cool-temp controlled space in the house. If you use proper airtight storage, the oxygen absorbers doing their job will create a negative-pressure seal and you will feel and hear the "pop" when you break the seal and open the lid. Do it right and you can store for at least a couple years, and probably more.

Highly recommend a cigar fridge ... they are super awesome for this ...
I have the NewAir CC-100 (that in combination with glass jars and boveda packs)
If you're up for spending another $150, probably pretty easy to run a nitrogen or CO2 line, from a compressed tank, into that fridge. Just purge the fridge each time you open/close it. 20 pound nitrogen or CO2 tank would last a damn long time just purging that small space and shutting it off.
