Picked up a quartz banger for 20 bucks. I think this is my favorite way to dab.

It's all a out finding the hotspot and keeping steady. I was able to get a solid reading even on brand new quartz. You want to be pretty close as well. Approx 2" or so.
IMO if your numbers are jumping around its because you aren't steady enough. Also keep in mind the angle at which you're holding the thermometer matters. I try to point it down and into the nail.

I have a newish digital Chinese E-Nail that is Ti that i am testing and improving for them!
Version 2 coming soon with many improvements!
I tried at 302 and the wax melted and pooled on the nail with very little vapor, even when carb'd.
Desired results were achieved around 450 to 475, the pool of shatter oil started to "fume" lightly and when carb'd the glass dome filled with thick white vapor!
Found that my new SCS grinder is the perfect carb cap!!! No more burnt hand!!!
I will break out the temp gun tonight or later today and get an accurate temp reading on the head.
Will be interesting to see what/if there is a difference!

If the thermometer has an emissivity setting it can be adjusted specifically to measure shiny/translucent objects. If it's not adjustable the thermometer may just not be able to measure glass. If the buildup makes it opaque it should solve the problem.

have you tried the pinch test on their silicone? most companies fail this test aside from Oil Slick brand. they seem to be the only MFG of silicone stuff for our use that does not contain any filler. filler is bad. Oil Slick is indeed platinum cured silicone with zero filler.
just curious about titan owl stuff. try the pinch test on it. pinch/bend the silicone as hard as you can. if the silicone shows any white then it has filler and should bot be used.
noo goo amd some of the others have been found to have filler. no idea about titan owl products. Oil Slick is the real deal tho.

2clicker knows what's up! I've yet to see a single other kind of container which passes the pinch test as well.
My low-temp dabbing has changed significantly. I just broke my beautiful quartz pukinbeagle 20mm nail for my dnail yesterday so I decided it's time to step up in the dabbing tools!
New replacement pukinbeagle 20mm quartz nail coming in with a second dnail 1.2 w/ flat coil, a HE Infiniti and 20mm Sapphire insert. I tend to dab about 340-350c on my pukinbeagle quartz, but I am guessing I can probably get away with lower temps on the infiniti with flat coil and sapphire (both materials are much better heat conductors than quartz and the coil is directly in contact with the whole dabbing surface!).
I will also be getting the new revised silicone carbide nail coming soon, which I heard from a little birdy inside the d-nail labs will allow for CONVECTION DABS! I do not know how this will be delivered, because they said this is as much info as they can give away at this stage of development
I will of course report back with pics/vid/review when I finally get one of these in my hands
I use an adjustable soldering iron set to about 400-420 degrees (barely glowing) with an old ceramic cup from a dead atomizer on the end. I had to grind the soldering tip down to fit through the air hole in the atomizer. I set the iron with the ceramic cup over the quarts nail horizontally and dab directly onto the ceramic out side wall. If temps are correct, the dab will roll down the outside of the ceramic cup and be gone before it gets to the bottom side. I find this works better than my 90 degree ti skillet attachment or quarts nail as I usually get them too hot or cold..
Edit: I like this setup because the ceramic cup can be hit with a torch red hot easily for cleaning and then with in a few seconds it will cool back down to the set temp of the soldering iron and is ready to go again. Also, if I get too greedy and put to much dab on at once, you can roll the soldering iron in your hands and chase the drip around the cup to keep it from falling off.
