How to: Low Temp Dabs On Quartz Nails -OR- "Whats Your Style?"

Caligula

Maximus
It's been a bit since I've made a video. For this attempt, I actually did a little editing as well as adding a running commentary. In this addition to my video library, I take a closer look at how I go about doing a proper "low temp" dab on my Kings Quartz domeless quartz nail.

Obviously, I'm not saying that my way is the only way (or even the best way), but it works for me and the equipment I'm currently using. As always, your results may vary.

If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to post up. I'm also glad to entertain criticisms since it takes steel to sharpen steel. I am always looking to further perfect my technique!

Furthermore, if you have tips or a style of your own that you'd like to share, please do! I don't want this to be a one off post/thread.

...oh, and always I recorded inglourious 1080P HD, so turn that resolution up!

Little bit involved with temp gun, good otherwise. I use quart glass, I torch it about 10 seconds and I get good result.

I agree that it's an extra step, but short of a digital e-nail, this is the only consistent way I know of to dab at my desired temps. I can guess based on time or holding my hand above the nail (for "feel") but it'll never be as consistent and accurate as the thermometer.

I absolutely despise hitting a nail that's too hot or too cold, and this seems to fix that 99% of the time versus about 75-80% with educated guessing.

As far as torching, I like to get the quartz as well as the residue buildup to glow orange and white respectively. This "sterilizes" and cleans the nail between uses, and aids in retaining flavor IMO since it burns off any residuals. Perhaps I'm being too OCD though? I'd like to hear opinions on this.

Im afraid torching the glass glowing red, but I use the torch to clean the residue the day after. I use glass bucket quart cup, heats up faster than my regular domeless quartz, which is a little thicher.

Why are you afraid? If it's survivability of the nail, as long as it's quartz and not boro, it'll be fine. I torch my nail lime that daily, multiple times a day. Been a few months of that now.

Of course if it's not necessary, I'm just waiting a bunch of butane.

I also torch my quartz castle to a glowing red every time, but my setup is not as sophisticated as yours. it is a bit of an educated guess for me to guess when to take it before it cools too much.

Dooood...you sound familiar to me and part of your face I saw, look too. But, who knows as I don't live there anymore. Anyways, I would not say you are being OCD...it's the way you want to do it. I think you have a very good method...no guess work and you dab at the temp you want with no guessing...nothing wrong with that. It was also nice to see in video, the pancake method and the 90* edge for removal...I remember reading that but good on you to show it...well done Emperor C

thanks, I don't dab but interesting to learn about it.
The music was a nice touch but the music volume interfered
with understanding you a couple times.
Is low 700 F the target temp for cool dabbing?
what is considered high temp dabbing?

I like the idea of the temp gun, to know precisely where you're at

Sorry about that, I also noticed this with the volume when I played the video through a mono speaker on my phone. It sounded fine when I listened to it with headphones on my PC when I edited it though. I think you need the two channels to hear the narration 100%.

As for 700*, I found this to be the best place from trial and error as well as from comparing notes from e-nail users. Its hot enough to get the Leidenfrost effect going, but not so hot as to instantly vaporize your dab (burning the oil and ruining the taste as well as making it harsh). I believe VB came to the same conclusion when testing their VB2 unit.

As for high temp dabbing, bleh. Might as well suggest I smoke a bowl. Basically thats hitting a nail thats so hot it flash vaporizes the dab.

I lived all over San Diego from 1991 up till February 2013...so Cardiff, Encinitas, Poway, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Mission Valley, Normal Heights, El Cajon, are all the places I lived and the last place I lived was in East Chula Vista.

Great video bro. I just got my laser thermometer today from Amazon too. Bb&b torch too. But I got a bunch of Chinese glass in front of me:lol:. Working great with my bucket banger nail. Such huge hits I'm getting the hiccups! I think I need to actually breathe between dabs.

@Caligula - I gotta agree with ya. My favorite enail temp or what I shoot for even with a torch is about 670 to 700. Anything above that if were to watch under a microscope you would see that a large percentage of your dab spits off the nail and you lose product.

As far as quartz, it's a bit tricky. If you go to hot product sticks, they discolor easily, and the obvious - they break. With that being said, quartz is by FAR the best tasting and cleanest hit your gonna get. With my Halen Honey Hole I shoot for 550 and use a carb cap.

I hope this helps.

Isn't 550 a bit low? I'd be afraid of losing meds due to it not vaporizing completely.

@Caligula

The thing I find often is honestly that people don't know how to dab. I watch my friends get on the nail and pull as hard as they can then end up coughing have of what they put in back out. With quartz Joel Halen himself told me in DM on IG 500 to 500 is all you need on quartz or it will burn and turn your piece black.

So with that said I get mine to 550 and as soon as I drop the dab i pop on the carb, pull ass much as I can handle and then do the same 2 or 3 times. Now, I've essentially enjoyed not only the flavor but I got all my meds as well.

I will try this but I think my nail is too small to retain heat long enough unless I use a really small dab.

man... and can I just add that every single piece of quartz has its own unique properties... all having to do with density of the quartz...
ive had regular quartz cup head nails, divited head nails, domeless cups, domeless castle and domeless bangers... all heated and caped differently to produce a good vapor...

it gets irritating since I do not yet own an enail.

but titanium domeless... with a carb cap has been the easiest to free hand torch dab with because it seems to have better heat retention and less extreme temperature variances.

I couldn't agree more. I am very new to dabbing and I must say that using Ti has been very easy to do. Now the quartz domeless I have is another story...my first dab on it the temp was way too hot ad it started bubbling all over...didn't taste too good either. Second dab, didn't bubble hardly at all, taste was better. I noticed that a very dark patch is left as well. Learn by doing is all I can do.

honestly im very close to just buying a 710whip and calling it a day! its the cheapest ive seen... and I could put the torch away finally. not quartz though... ceramic.

I hear ya on the ease part...I must be weird or that it's a novelty or both...I often like the "process"....fill the piece, figure out which nail I will use, ignite the torch, heat the nail while twisting the piece and/or nail for even heating, remove heat, take my time getting the dab, dab away, carb cap if using my HE Infniti, or dome if I sue my old Ti nail. Last night I took out every dome, bowl, and adapter to see if I can use them as a carb cap for the domeless quartz I have...all of them almost cover it, but I can see a tiny, tiny part of the bottom of the intake grooves so I'm not sure how effective they would be for a cap.
