An adapter works great and should be used, especially with a domeless that fits in/on a joint but the best way to prevent this is regular cleaning and a steady hand with the torch.
@FlyingLow you just got a quartz castle which has a drop in tube so just don't hit the joint with the torch and you will be fine.
To the op, if the glass has no cracks or nicks and you happen to know a glass blower, you can ask them to put it in their kiln for you, that's safer than using a torch because the glass will heat up evenly. I would only torch it as a last resort, just be careful not to pinpoint just the dirty spot and heat a larger area. Spend more time focusing on the stain to get it the hottest but the heat needs to spread out to avoid thermal shock.
