The original sapphire halos had no concentric circle look to it like you describe, it just seemed to have a porous kinda devitrified (opposite of glassy) look to the floor of the dish. Of course, the batch after which was first for public was as you describe IME ;)

It looks like the first batch are milky white and not very translucent (polycrystalline?), while the second are much more translucent (monocrystalline?).

Mine is also from the April batch and looks like yours with the top and bottom halves both frosty. The newer ones look more like the Quartz dishes with the translucent bottom, I really wonder if this change caused the increased breakage. I think each batch is only about 50 units so 3 cracked ones just on this forum means at least 6% of the batch is defective.

Mine is still chugging along strong, I always dab around 610F and heat clean at either 800F or higher if I go up/down in increments of 100F. Only had one scare with it when it wouldn't unscrew which I think was partly due to resin buildup and not removing it for longer than normal. But I eventually managed without forcing direct pressure on it. I only screw it in tight enough so it won't unscrew and I'm even more careful now.

Well a 6 percent failure rate could be user error as much as a manufacturing defect but that assumes all sales and breaks were reported here which is probably unlikely, as some people probably found out about d-nails sapphire halo through bubblemans social media presence.

I've also thought that the dish being screwed down tightly might be a contributing factor of it is such that it restricts thermal expansion to the point of critical shock.

If the bottoms are clear they are probably mono instead of poly and would seem to be weaker than older batch.

I need to experiment more with refractory materials.

I have a sapphire halo from the June batch. It has the polished base and exterior with a matte/frosted texture on the inside of the dish. I have used it at 600F for about 3 months. I have cleaned the dish using oxiclean, isopropyl, grain alcohol, and hot water/steam, and have run it through an ultrasonic cleaner. I have never heat cleaned it. No cracks yet (knock on wood)

I use the washer on top of the heater. This is tightened just to the point that the heater stops moving. The dish/retainer nut are tightened only to the point the dish stops turning.

D-nail recently posted this white paper to their website regarding "uptemping", in which they suggest applying concentrate at 400 and letting the temp rise to 850 to preserve terpene flavor profile (different terpenes volatilize at different temps). The paper discusses how sapphire is the preferred dish material for the uptemping process; however, also cautions against applying concentrate above the max operating temperature of 750.

Has anyone tried this or have the courage to give it a shot?

Well the upcoming Hex-Nail will support it but you're specifically waiting for one without wifi.

I didn't set it that high, only 650F, but it shouldn't be an issue I think since the oil is the same temp as the dish. The concern is more about thermal shock to the dish and that wouldn't here. I would be worried about it burning though.

Yup, tbh I believe d-nail are gonna have a more viable controller solution for my needs ready to buy before hex-nail do (don't ask how or why!). I also want to avoid wooden enclosures too and hex-nail seem to only offer these. It is not a complaint though, I have different requirements is all; for me, I need something that can be kept clean and not absorb/react/swell with the sorts of substances we use with our e-nails - especially when it may be used in my processing space. Clean equipment means clean meds :peace:

Looking forward to seeing what D-Nail churns out. I like the wood Hex-Nail is offering but a metal option would be nice too in the future since it's not everyone's preference. It will look awesome on my coffee table but some people use them in their workshops and such and I'd be worried about ruining it. I'll be keeping my Gimido for portable use as well for similar reasons.

not sure where is the main Dnail thread, but when I was using mine, I didn't use the small washer. The large one, I put right under the coil. Some people like to put the big washer(heat retainer) above the coil, right below the dish.

The large washer pairs with the coil and the small washer pairs with the water pipe adapter.

The side that the halo and coil fit snugly together on top of the large washer is the right side. (I forget off the top, but I believe it is the side with less threading.) The fit should be self evident though, as the other side doesn't work as well.

Little revive on this thread. I know there were others who experienced cracks with their sapphire halos. I'm not sure if you ever continued using it or what your status is with this gem of a nail, but I've moved mine into newvape flowerpot wrap-around setup. I feel like the base the halo sits in, accompanied with the nut provides a very safe platform for the halo dish, it has very precise threading so the halo is never overtight! It even protects it to a degree and I feel gives a much more reliable heat transfer to the dish. I think I spent around $140 USD to get the entire setup, but it offers a convection flower vape along with the other benefits the base provides.
