I have luck doing that with the arizer air. If it's squishy enough you can chunk it and tamp it in there, not as effective as ground though. I haven't seen anything that can handle just throwing a big nug in there. Not nearly so well anyways.

With the Air it's to be expected, since it is a primarily conduction vaporizer. I just don't understand how the HA Voodoo really works!? To penetrate the load so well with mainly convection! I just did .4g of Strawberry Cough at max temp +10 completely unground, I just stuffed it all in there and tamped with the black mouthpiece. Perfectly roasted dark brown ABV! Voodoo!

I also just achieved success with unground nugs with the Mighty!

I think the secret is how the tiny jets distribute the air inside the core. It's a mix of convection and conduction and the air is very well distributed by the jets. In this way i think the HA is unique, and only for this very good point i think is injustly underrated.

waiting for the Migthy experience, but i think it will not be the same (the Voodoo is in the jets, trust me)

I use unground nugs in everything now. They can all do it, just not as effectively. I can leave a nugget in any vape long enough to cook it all the way through. What the HA does that is unique is that it quickly gets full extraction with satisfying clouds without grinding. When I use a nug with other vapes I remove it after several hits to crumble it up for some thick hits, but the HA doesn't need this.

I'm a full believer in what the maker says this thing does. He talks about the jets pushing and pulling the air back and forth through the nugget, scrubbing the actives off in the process. That's how he achieves such thorough extraction. The pump is pushing the air forward, and then the diaphragm pulls the air back slightly as it gets ready for the next pump, all at thirty times a second (I think). That's a lot of scrubbing!

This is what I mean! The VOODOO! What other vape can do that?

I get voodoo without the pump too!

Just created VOODOO with the Solo PV regular (non pvhes) GonG adapter! Stuffed and tamped in hard .25g which is just about the max it can hold without overflowing. Threw the Elite on max+10 inverted like I used to do with my Solo, and let it idle for 1 min. Then let the games begin! WOW! The AIRFLOW! I'm not used to this, and the VOODOO! Ofcourse, just like espresso or any other mode, the .25g comes out completely spent and crumbles to dust! The flavour!

My technique is using Tommy10's suggestion of putting the crucible on the gong like a sleeve since I don't have the actual hA gong from PV (yet).

For me There's something oddly satisfying just looking at and playing with the AVB from the Herbalaire... don't know how to explain it with out sounding like a crazy man... but what it does to those buds is unique for sure.

I love how it goes in like a christmas tree in december and comes out like a christmas tree in january. Put any pressure on it and it just crumbles away.

OMG YES! This exactly!

WHY in the world is this vape so underrated?? Game changer for me, never thought this could happen.

I just experienced .25g in the gong of Purple Kush that is boutique quality from beautiful Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada at max temp......the only time I have tasted this "candy flavour" is with @lazylathe's MiniVAP!

The “voodoo” that is mentioned here can be explained by the unique air flow design of the HA. For far too long, manufacturers have focused solely on heat only, when thinking of extraction. Air flow can be just as crucial, imo.

The 18 strategically engineered & placed air ‘jets’ are found just before the air hits the herb, in the bottom of the crucible. This gives the air a turbulent flow pattern that not only mixes the heat evenly, but allows for a multi-vortex air stream that simultaneously hits the herb from all sides, allowing for such an even cooking. Most all other vapes use a laminar-type air flow that tends to focus the heat to the center of the air stream, resulting in an uneven cooking.

This flow design (especially using the pump, which pulses the air to give a hammering effect), also allows for an extremely efficient penetration of the herb. Most all other vapes need grinding because they weren’t designed to penetrate in this way, and require maximum surface area of the bud. Their air flow follows the path of least resistance, resulting in an uneven and non-penetrating extraction which also requires stirring, between hits.

The HA is pretty much opposite in that it works even better if you compact the whole buds into a ‘puck’ that plugs the air flow. This gives the air flow a ‘resistance’ that forces the turbulent air flow through all parts of the herb, resulting in complete extraction from the entire bud, inside and out, without ever grinding and stirring.

This extraction technique is so powerful that I liken it to making BHO. The liquid butane is such an effective solvent, that you must pack the herb down well, providing a resistance, and increasing the residence time of the solvent in the herb to get a good yield. If you keep the herb loosened, the butane will just go right through it too quickly, leaving a portion of the goodies behind.

One other advantage of the 18 jets is that under air flow, they create a small, local pressure drop that enables the HA to effectively vapourize at a lower temperature. The designer limited the HA to 400F or so, not only to prevent it from ever combusting (it cannot), but also to avoid the toxic compounds that can begin forming around these temperatures (especially the volatiles). These local pressure drops total up to allow the HA to vapourize as if the 400F was a higher temperature, imo.

Evidence of this can be seen in the AVB, where I’ve compared it to AVB from other vapes, under my microscope. In all cases, HA AVB is cooked more evenly, thoroughly, and darker than AVB from other vapes at the same approximate temps. In some cases, it was as dark as AVB from other vapes that ran 25-30F higher.

Thanks @nicelytoasted for the Voodoo explanation! I absolutely LOVE the physics this vape uses, and now understand how it was created by 4 scientists. To achieve full extraction of compressed unground buds with freeflow airflow is just something else. Yet, it receives no hype like some other unmentionables in the plug in threads, yet is more durable and affordable than most. I like of like it this way though, our little cult following, and it's alot easier to keep track of this and the 2.2 threads, and seems like the posts have more substance.

The hA is the best thing to ever happen to my VAS! Just really wish I listened to all of you guys and pulled the plug sooner! I will always owe you @nicelytoasted for all the time you put into your PM's!

Almost there...
@biohacker

The video is private for some reason...

I finally have my Elite performing like a super star!!
What i ended up doing was measuring the bottom plate temp of my 2.1 at my favourite temp.
I always used 365 on my 2.1 and got thick clouds and great flavour but could not replicate it on my Elite.

So out comes the temp probe and probing we go!

My temp on the 2.1 reads 371 on the bottom plate.
At 365 my Elite reads 388 on the bottom plate, way too hot for my liking!
So i start dialing down the temp till it reads 352 on the digital screen and the bottom plate reads in at 370 on the bottom plate.

First test and BAM!!! Thar she blows!!!
Amazing clouds and taste, just as i get off my 2.1!!!

Now i can say the Elite is my daily driver!!
She works with the PV GonG like a beast!!

You should measure them both at MAX temp!

Does the video work yet?? Youtube was whining about it being blocked in some countries because of the song that was playing on the radio in the background!

Here it is! Today i'll make the same video, but instead using 0.2g!

EDIT:

And here we go again with the PV SOLO GonG! 0.2g of top shelf Nukem, coarsely shredded then heavily tamped. 60 second presoak! I used just a bit too much water in this one. I think my next tests will be untamped though....although I use a screen in the gong, the 4 small holes definitely show when you're trying to pull through that compressed puck, so it felt a tad too restricted for my liking. I'm thinking the Solo gong will be better for smaller loads of coarsely shredded but not packed/tamped, and the hA gong will allow for tamping and packing due to the lack of holes. Correct me if i'm wrong @lazylathe? The PV hA GonG's are "turbo" aka open bore?

And on with the show!

Thanks to @mikek9 for the tip in his most amazing review.... I just nudged the crucible screen about 1/4" or so from it's normal position. Used a coarse grind of 0.3g (wanted to go big for espresso!) and tamped it into the bottom! Can load as little or as much as you like this way.... just another versatile option! I LOVE it! Could there even exist a more versatile vape? I wonder if hA are working on an aromatherapy bowl accessory?

did you use the pump for extraction or run it through some glass?

BOTH! Although i'm finding it tricky with the limitations of the power cable length from the Elite pump(I SO need some kind of extension although I doubt it even exists). Unless I buy a 2.2 pump (or a pump that has its own plug) I need some sort of glass adapter like an Arizer Extreme glass elbow, but able to attach to the small diameter hA tubing.

Any suggestions? I LOVE espresso mode with the pump through glass, but something that should be so simple, is a major bitch due to the smaller aquarium tubing diameter and the tiny Elite pump power cable. I plan to email hA in the near future about this....perhaps they can sell me some sort of power cable extension, or at least a 2.2 pump.

Any suggestions for pumps? The Elite high flow one is super expensive, although being able to vary the flow is awesome.

Just pulled the trigger on a PV hA gong 18mm both regular and shorty!

What's the advantage of the PV hA gong over the stock oem that should adapt in the same way?

As far as I know the PV hA gongs can void the warranty because they get stuck inside the herbalAire. I would double check with the manufacturer to see if this is the case. I know they strongly suggest using the TonG (Teflon on glass) gong.

If you are trying to use the herbalAire elite with glass and pump assist I can see the limitations on the short power cord/air pump cord for the pump. I have never used it with glass and pump assist for that reason, but since I have an h2.2 I have a few pumps that have longer, separate cords so this is possible.

You could definitely lengthen the cord on your pump by splicing it in the middle and extending it with some extra cord. Might be cheaper than buying another pump. However, I think an extra 2.2 pump is only about $20 or so and that would solve your issue. I think they kept the cord short on the elite to give it a more complete look and not so messy with cables running everywhere.

Lastly, I personally have the more expensive high output pumps for the Elite and the h2.2 and I would highly recommend them. The reason I would is because they have an infinite amount of adjustability for the air flow with the throttle valve that is included. It allows you to pump bags anywhere from 20 seconds to 4 minutes. I like this because depending on your herb you can adjust the vapour density by adjusting the fill time. The slower the fill time the greater the vapour to air ratio. This is only possible with the high output pump. I think it's worth the extra money, but the stock pump still extracts just fine.
