Herb Grinders

If you really want a fine grind a two piece grinder is best regardless of the brand. I like the medium spacecase.

One tip I have learned. When your grinder gets all gummed up and gets stuck together heat it up with a torch. You don't need to get it "hot" just really warm. It will then self clean as you grind and as a bonus it smells really good. :)

Can't you just use a 4 peice upside down which basically causes it to work as a 2 peice? What I do with mine is grind maybe 10 times back and forth with it upside down for a finer grind, and then put it right side up and grind about 3 times back and forth just to cause it to fall through the holes into the herb chamber.

As the other post said, I'm used to loading stems from the grinder, so doesn't a 4 piece work as well as a 2 peice if it's upside down?

Thanks for the tip, if I don't clean the sides of mine it eventually siezes up like it's soldered and it's hard to get apart if I let it get that bad, so I'll keep your trick in mind.

I always grind sideways, as though the grinder were oriented as a tire on the ground.....
With a 4 piece, that will keep it "mulching" and not potentially allow kief already collected to be disrupted completely.
With a 2 piece, the herb falls continually downward upon itself as you turn grinder halves... and it mulches as fine as you wish!~

I picked this one up at the corner store for 10 bucks. It gets the job done and hasn't failed me yet.

I dont think ive ever used my 2pc grinder sideways but that makes a lot of sense. Trying that tonight!

Try it with a Volcano grinder (or any see through acrylic grinder) you will see the logic!

I hadn't considered that, is the Volcano acrylic grinder really solid? Can it break stems or do stems break it? As I had said before the one and only plastic grinder I had ground all it's own teeth off on the very first use and my herb was left intact with broken plastic bits stuck in it.

I have always removed the lumber from my buds before grinding. That's my second least favorite part of the plant to consume. Luckily, I don't see anymore of the very least favorite part......cloning is the best.

I discovered Chapstick (specifically Natural lip butter) to work wonders on grinders, for those of you who don't want to order grinder grease off of the internet :)

Also, a few other grinder related questions that I couldn't really find in this thread.

Anybody have the Diamond Grinder from the420site.com? http://www.the420site.com/products.php
I saw the videos they made and was intrigued a bit. A hard medical grade plastic seems like it would make a good grinder.

And is there any common verdict about mid-priced aluminum grinders? I got a generic of equivalent or perhaps a little better machining than a Sharpstone, but I keep considering picking up a higher quality grinder for some peace of mind. But then I also think that I've not noticed anything resembling aluminum shavings, and haven't had a single issue with my grinder other than horror stories making me question it.

For less than a buck more, you can get a small 2 pc. Space Case from several of our recommended dealers, using an FC discount code. I'd have to go with that, vs. any plastic grinder.

Unlike the old days, even some low priced grinders (under $20 for a 2-2.5" 4 pc.) are high quality aluminum and 100% CNC cut. Several lower priced name brands are made in the same factory on the same equipment. I've used Chromium Crusher and Sharp Crusher, and they've performed and held up as well as Space Case or Mendo Mulcher. The high end brands are a good deal for a small to medium 2 pc., but I won't pay the premium for the 4 pc. models. I mostly use a 2 pc. now anyway, since I mostly prefer to grind without drying the herb out enough to screen kief.

still haven't found a better 2 pcs grinder than the mix n ball. the herb tray on the bottom proved to be more useful then originally thought. shame their business practices are not as good as their products.

Best way to clean kief out of a 4 piece Sharpstone? (merged)
So I have a great grinder but it's SUPER clogged up with kief in like every nook and cranny, except the actual bottom part/kief catcher--the threads, the actual grinding pieces, the screen. Is there a good way to remove any of this and keep it usable? If not, what's the best way to clean it in general?

Take a plastic zip lock baggie, and put your grinder in it (four pieces taken apart) and pour in enough ISOpropyl alcohol (91% or higher if possible, not a big deal though) to cover the grinder pieces. Let it soak a bit, then take a clean tooth brush, and use that to get any kief out of / off of the grinder. STRAIN (un bleached coffee filter) and collect your ISO in a pyrex pie plate, wait for to evap. There you go.

Do a little searching around here though, for Grinder cleaning/reclaiming, and maintenance. Lots of good info.

quote from above link
After reading this thread, i Did my first cleaning on my 4 pc Ssv grinder this weekend. i did a cleaning in 91 Iso and qtips as my tools. My grinder has never been cleaned in nearly two years of heavy, daily use and the grindng was not smooth, often got stuck. So did the second chamber where the goodies go, the walls of this chamber were well caked with goodness. I didnt do any soaking. I put about a half inch worth of iso in a dish, each piece went in for a quick bath, a quick qtipping, and a rinse and they were sparkling. As for the second chamber, which didnt really submerge in the half inch of iso, i just dunked the bottom so the screen got a iso bath and gave the screen and inner walls a scrub and it was perfect. About a half hour air dry. (should have pre ground more as this is my only grinder and had to hand grind during the dry) I actually like it better than the day it was new cause the threads arent as tight, but its just as clean.

I evaped my iso and Had a lil chunk of reclaim after. I didnt know if i should strain or not and didnt this time. Anyway i tried vaping the reclaim and even combusted a bit snd wasnt impressed with the results. Reminded me of that resin high that lasts two minutes and just gives you a nasty taste in your mouth.

Overall, satisfied with the cleaning. Disappointed with the reclaim.

A bit of good advice in this quote from J.R.R. Tokin' as well.
+1 for answers to 1,2,3.

Extra tips:
* Keep grinder in freezer for best grind results and minimal crystal build up in unwanted areas.
* Regular cleaning with 99% Iso Alcohol is recommended for an easy, smooth grind and can make some nice reclaim.
* Don't bang pieces together to dislodge herb, use a brush or wooden toothpick - this will maintain the grinder longer.
* Don't put too big bits or stalks in as they will blunt the teeth quicker.

I have to disagree with this (sorry, Cookie.... still love ya' ;)) For the price I paid for my grinders, I expect them to stand up to some banging. This may be good advice for cheaper models, but for a quality grinder a little bit of banging shouldn't be a problem.

A friend of mine has a really nice looking Space case grinder: http://www.everyonedoesit.co.uk/online_headshop/Pollen_Herb_Grinder__Party_Size.cfm?iProductID=548 but it does not grind herb as well as my plastic weed world grinder http://www.weedworld.co.uk/weed-world-grinder.html

Now, you probably won't believe this but the weed world grinder has been doing it's job exceptionally well for nearly ten years now. Even with moist buds you get a nice fine mix, while in metal grinders it just sticks to the teeth in large lumps.

After all these years with my cheap old grinder I am a bit concerned about getting plastic in with my herb - there has never been any visible/tastable evidence for this but nevertheless I would like to upgrade to a high quality one and get away from acrilyc

Can anyone recommend a grinder which grinds better than a space case?

Apologies if this has been asked before...

usually just stick with my 4 piece sharpstone. Had it for a few years now, and it still holds up, even with the constant banging to get everything out lol.

Went to my local headshop yesterday, asked advice on what was the best grinder available, got sold a Kannastore £27, left the shop took it out to have a look at it, dry grinded it, metal shaving and silver shaving off the magnet immediately.

Took it back and exchanged it for a much cheaper Headchef grinder. The adonized aluminium sticker gave me faith so I took it round a friend's house on the way home. The Headchef was a piece of s***. Exactly the same problems as the Kannastore plus a grey, lead-like residue on my fingertips whenever I touched the inside of the grinder. IMHO 2 brands to avoid there.

The general consensus at my friend's house was that this is a common problem with the majority of metal grinders and only Space cases don't suffer this problem.

Well I don't want to taint my herbs so I am about to order a 2pc titanium space case. Fingers crossed I have better luck this time - have only read good things about them...

Get a space case, dont fuck around with other shit. I have a small 2pc titanium grinder that was only $22 shipped to my door. You cant go wrong.

Or, get a Melcho Mulcher, those are quality as well, Ive heard.

I still like the original 2 piece medium space case more than the titanium one of the same specifications.
Is that because the titanium coating flakes off?

The main thing I'm trying to avoid is metal/paint shavings getting into my herbs. Glad I popped back into the forum because I was just about to click buy on a titanium sc.
