Herb Grinders

@Cannabis Connoisseur , does the Cali Crusher truly grind ?? I thought about copping one but I've seen a ton of bad reviews. I've heard this grinder referred to as " the grinder that doesn't grind " so many times that it made me hesitant to buy one . I hear a lot that it just tears and compresses the herbs into little chunks . I've seen this in videos . Is this possibly user error?? Should there be a possibility of user error with a grinder ??? I'm really curious as I still love the look of this thing .
That's ridiculous from my point of view, however some may have had bad experiences. I say its ridiculous because bet your ass had I spent 90 bucks on a grinder that didn't work properly I'd have bitched to the company for a refund and had that failed I'd make a vendetta to fuck up their future business! I personally Love It! I'll post some pics of different strains, with different grind consistencies tomorrow. I do know there are LOTS of knockoffs and cheaper variations. Mine satisfied my needs for a grinder able to fluff grind. I can put huge nugs in and crush grind if I want. My more sticky gummy types may clunk up and require an extra twist through. Overall its a very high quality, versatile and functional grinder. I'd be talking shit and searching for a better Grinder had it been anything else. Look at my Username and Avatar:rockon::tup::science:, I don't play that shit! :goon:

Looks like a job for!
No wonder you have some beef with SLX @Dramma Lamma, looks like a KO or something. I just closely inspected my top piece & it is flawless. I would email SLX directly with that photo & I am sure they will want to make you a happy customer. I like mine enough where I can buy any grinder I like but see no reason to & surely I am not the only happy client?

J4xZItg.jpg

Then you must have lucked out.
I have 4 units, 3 of which all have this issue in machining quality.
The 4th has its own unique machining flaws but more importantly the coating just feels OFF, on that one. not smooth like the others feel.

Here is that same image again with some highlighting to make things easier to see.
bNSaaQs.jpg

As luck would have it I went out to a few LHS today to shop for gift for a co-worker.
One shop I visited now carries the SLX, I asked to see 2 of them in different colors larger size, and both had the issue here. Bumping up my viewed in person # up to 5 out of 6 have such an issue. That 6th one has bigger issues by the way.

I inspected mine and agree there are some clear differences to @Dramma Lamma's pic

VqrfTEm.jpg

Along with the machining, the magnet appears different to me. Like the one is beveled, maybe, and the other completely flat/flush. The outer ridge also looks more pronounced but maybe that's visual fuckery, not too sure.

I've been happy with my SLX, the coating has remained intact with no extra precautions and it powers through the stickiest, most dense material I can get my hands on with ease.

I do have my first SCS on the way as part of an Herbalizer accessories package; I'm looking forward to comparing the two :science:

Nah the magnet is flush and smooth, the area which appears as a bevel is actually just gunk on the magnet.

Once again this all being said SLX has treated me right and exchanged me for different parts once. That sure as hell keeps me as their customer and I WILL get the 3.0 if/when that happens.

A similar QC checkup issue is why I will never deal with SCS directly again, as they literally yelled at me over the phone as well as wasted the entire duration of the exchange period dicking me around.

Overall I do like the SLX design for the most part and it has great potential. But in my experience the QC is just not there in the 2.0 and it's frankly unfair to SLX for me to repeatedly demand a new item.

I've never tried using a 3 piece - wouldn't kief still accumulate in the bottom where the ground herbs fall? Or is it that the kief is being scooped up along with the herb each time you load a bowl?

Yeah it's just that you have no screen to filter out kief, so keeps the kief with your herb when you vape it. Makes for better bowls imo especially if you want a specific strain in its full glory (with kief you might be mixing strains, which don't get me wrong is fun too) and since i prefer pure convection on demand kief can be harder to vape on its own (a press would help ofcourse) so I prefer it unfiltered these days

@biohacker I forgot about the Chewy! It is very intriguing but yeah gotta wait for user reports here before I'd go near it, seems risky and not cheap to try unfortunately, but pretty damn cool

This has been my experience with the SLX & it will get through the toughest nugs without requiring cleaning of any ddescription. I must have really lucked out with mine @Dramma Lamma because it looks like a cleaner version of the pic 6079Smith posted. Thick, uniform coating & no signs of those "rings" from the machining. Maybe some of us got a "good batch" though I admit to eyeing off a SCS 3 piece but my ground weed lives in a bowl not a grinder anyways.

Update:
It took a few more emails after I was told: sorry we could not come to a resolution and there was nothing more they could do, me telling them i was sorry they had come to that conclusion, they had lost a customer and explaining that they weren't honouring their own warranty and more...
But they have finally agreed to send a replacement grinder at no additional cost to myself.
I kinda get the feeling it's the management behind the scenes who are the ones being difficult though as once it was approved the customer service rep seemed glad and happy to be able to help instead of hinder. Telling me he had informed the warehouse make sure to send a pristine grinder, and shipping would do their best to make sure there would be no duties.

I'm happy with the outcome (or will be once I have a 'pristine' GR8TR) but I would have liked the whole process to be less drawn out and painless.

The replacement gr8tr arrived today.
I ended up having to pay an extra £14 odd in customs as they failed to mark it as a warranty replacement despite telling me it would be :bang::argh: :horse:

On the bright side, upon first inspection there appears to be no rough edges, knurling or chipped teeth.
I'm happy to finally have a decent example of a GR8TR but it has tarnished their reputation in my books.

Also they outsource manufacturing to china now, so you know their machining costs should be way down.
It's etched right on the base:

Glad to see you got yourself a good example....

I had to go through similar issues to get a good one...
But now that I do, I think it will last a lifetime..

Mine is still effortlessly fluffing up even the stickiest of material....

Never really cleaned it apart from a brush down...

Certainly is a very good grinder....

I'm sure it will serve you well....

Anyone interested in the Chewy? Looks like it has been released!

https://chewygrinder.com/

Review:

I've been playing around with mine for a couple weeks now.
It's a pretty inconsistent course grind.
Too course for my liking, but I prefer the fine plate in my gr8tr.

Chewying into the gr8tr makes it a lot easier to turn, and you end up with gr8tr consistency, so that might be an option for ya.

I get much better results with my current line up using the gr8tr over the chewy.

When mobile with chewy I usually dump load into palm mid session and break up to get full extraction.

It loads all my devices great except GH, as the funnel end is the same diameter as GH, and doesn't fit inside, just butts up to it.

I find myself using it more, as ease and convenience has been winning out lately.

I'm all ears on the Clipper....I need something to replace my Kannastor GR8TR solid body because my wrists are acting up again, soooo it's back to the drawing board. The Zeus Vortex crank is awesome, but the grind is coarser than my liking for convection vapes. Was thinking about this one to replace it:

https://www.grasscity.com/us_en/bla...k-herb-grinder-4-part-choice-of-4-colors.html

Hopefully it has smaller holes...I love this crank style due to the ability to "screw down" the top piece.

Otherwise, i'll be looking at getting a larger size SLX or SCS, SC or something....I think it's the smaller 2.5" size that causes me the pain/strain.

@biohacker worry not man, I plan to post up my review on the clipper pretty soon. I had told @Shit Snacks I'd be posting one up but have been in crunch mode here lately. I will make sure and post it with illustrations of the various grinds capable.

I've never used a grinder that felt better in the hands and been more fluid to use, but I think some may wish that the fine grind would be a bit finer.

I am still honeymooning with it, but I definitely think it's worth a look. The only thing that interrupts the consistency is just that it doesn't macerate through bits of stems like my space case does, so stems are a little more noticeable.

So the Super Weapon 1 worked pretty well first grind, a bit courser than I had hoped, but i could grind more upside down than I did I guess. Still gets pretty dirty right away unfortunately, I guess that's where the love for the SLX and it's coating comes in? Still think I want the SCS 3 piece sooner than later now though

You are the man! First @Mulehead with the elusive review of the Chewy and now you are front and centre my friend! lol Can't wait....sounds amazing.... perfect for me as I don't like too fine of a grind anyhow for my vapes. And I even think that stems being a bit more noticeable is a GOOD thing because then it's easier to pick them out!

Just checked out my Kannastor GR8TR solid body and there are little circular punch out marks all over! Doesn't affect function whatsoever.

You see, I thought the same thing when I ordered it. It's actually a Formax 420 from DH gate but it looks identical to the SLX design. Though I haven't gotten a chance to try it out yet.

So far, so good. Passed the paper metal shaving test so I gave it a whirl. I'm impressed @ $13.60 shipped.

That grinder looks nice. Is it still working OK?

When shopping for my first grinder, I narrowly chose the GR8TR over the SLX mostly because of price. This one might just give me a taste of the SLX without the cost.

The GR8TR vape is going ok, but I have a few niggles with it. The usual herb getting stuck in the holes, and I always have to unstick my herb from the magnet area and grind again. I don't know if that's normal, but maybe a bigger grinder will help. I'd also like to try a slightly more coarse grind. So I thought I'd expand my horizons.

I've had mine for over a year now, while my stuff is not really sticky I never had any issue and it grinds well more on the coarse side I'd say but I never grind upside down. I feel like there's not much difference in what direction you turn, in the end it's the size of the holes that matter I think. I love the quick lock system even though I got it stuck a couple of times but once you know how to avoid that problem then it's all good.

The only thing that weirds me out on it a bit are the cross bars under the screen, doesn't that block kief falling into the dish? And that screw in the center as well... I mean I'm a 3 piece guy anyway so screen doesn't matter to me, but still curious about that

Meanwhile I am not sure I will keep the Super Weapon, it definitely grinds more course than I wanted, with some big holes mixed in for some reason, and it's very shallow without the herb section (could remove the screen of that section as is its benefit, but then there's just a ledge so that's wierd) only been used a couple times and the middle section is still brand new so maybe I could sell it here?

I ordered a walnut mflb finishing grinder from VaporNation bc i had enough reward points to make it free (well free shipping wouldn't work with the points and it only uses them for the product itself, so I did have to pay $9 for tax and shipping stupidly, have $3 left of points) so I guess that will be for when I need a fine grind. Seems pretty nice actually with the wood and easily cleanable steel grate plate...

Meanwhile I am supposed to be getting a $25 Amazon giftcard from a survey so I am thinking I will use it to get a discounted SLX and see what all the fuss is about... That nonstick coating is looking real nice now that I can get such dense moist crystalline Cali meds... Think I'm going to go with purple, and maybe the 2.4inch? Is the smaller one 2 or 2.2 inch bc I've seen both listed, anyone here have both?

My shredder is 2.2 inch, and I'll probably get the 2.2 inch SCS 3 piece (their big one is a whopping 2.75inch) to replace it at some point, so having a slightly bigger SLX may be a good idea for variety...

Finally from my disappointment with the SW1 I am tempted by the Sharpstone 2.0 since it has the same teeth but smaller holes (all little circles vs the few random larger long shapes of the SW1) and only costs $21 for silver on eBay with a clear top, which is cool to see, but then that means the lid is plastic? Not good for herbs sticking to it maybe? I presume it's healthy etc though? They also have a clear top silver with hand crank on eBay for $26 but eh could be more to go wrong right? The shape of the 2.0 is cool too though, they angle the body a bit in a unique way. Ofcourse I would probably be removing the screen section on this as well (and getting their 2.2inch instead of the 2.5inch... Though the hand crank one is 2.5) So anyone have any experience with this one? Person who recommended the SW1 for fine grind said his Sharpstone was the finest though, but I am ofcourse wary...

Maybe I should just stick with the finishing grinder for fine (but can it do medium fine actually? I'd rather that than total powder honestly) get the big SLX for all my medium most common grinds, and then the small SCS 3 piece for courser grinds and on the go needs... Perhaps the Sharpstone is superfluous but I am so curious, maybe only if I can sell the SW1? Damn GAS took me by surprise lol

I have the small 2" SLX 2.0. I've never heard of the 2.2 inch, perhaps that was version 1.0? I actually ordered the 2.4" but Amazon sent the wrong one and I decided to keep it. I would recommend the 2.4", the 2.0 is small and perhaps because of the threadless screen design, there is not much room for your ground material. If you like 3 piece grinders you can easily remove the screen section of the SLX and use it as a 3 piece. I like to call it a 3.5 piece grinder.

The nonstick coating is awesome although recently I had some issues with cannabis that was over 30% THC. In the past I didn't have issues even up to 26%. I'm hoping it was just that particular strain, and not the coating itself losing effectiveness over time.

You don't hear about Space Case grinders that often around here. They're the most traditional style but I really enjoy my massive 3.5" black Ti model. It can grind an eighth at a time easily. It actually did a better job with the strain that was over 30%.

I gave my SLX a clean for the first time in ages & have been using it as a 3 piece. Seems to be working very well & mine is a 2.2". Checking out the coating closely there are no signs of any delamination or flaking. There are scratches & mild wear on the inner & outer wall where they rub together but I am not concerned as the grind area is perfect. What is funny is mine has never needed cleaning I have just done it every 3 months or so because otherwise would be neglect of my grinder.

Hello everyone. My 3 piece scs is coming in the mail today. I've been reading up on this thread and a lot of people were talking about the "paper test". Should I try this test with my new scs when it arrives? Or is there any other test or cleaning or anything that I should do before I start grinding up some fluff? Thanks!

Cleaning machining products before use is really recommended!
Generally there is some machining oil's leftover, or metal dust and you don't want to inhale that ;)

MFLB finishing grinder came, so much tinier than I expected, I guess that makes sense since connects to the vape's bowl. It's also a bit rough though, like not sanded well, could end up with wood in my herbs... We'll see when i try to use it, in no rush. I also got a wooden grinder from @mistvaporizer, it is very nice polished wood with very unique blades. Again don't know when I'll use it but it's pretty cool, he sells them on his site I think, not sure if he has anymore.

Still waiting on my Amazon gift card to get an SLX, and I'll be listing the SW1 for sale here over the weekend if anyone is interested

Since you like 3 pieces @Shit Snacks I think you will like using the SLX as one. If SLX could make a higher walled, concave bottomed piece it would be about perfect to me. I am still shocked at the amount of people here who have had a poor SLX experience as mine has been so good with a year of heavy use.

Regardless of whatever grinder anyone buys I recommend people spend as much as they can afford as a good grinder can not only make life easier but can make a good vape great

Yeah man, it really does seem right up my alley, for the teeth and holes too. Shame it doesn't have a concave bottom like the SW1 and SCS 3 piece do, but it's more of a bonus I suppose, my SCS 4 piece doesn't have that either... I am curious about how the SLX will be without the screen though, bc that chamber still pulls out and then its like a ring? Is it loose when you want to use just as a 3 piece? EDIT: after looking at some pics I see the screen is attached to the ring so that whole thing is the herb basket insert, very interesting so it really is like a 3.5 piece and stays short either way

Yeah I think the 2.4inch SLX with the 2.2inch SCS 3 piece will be the perfect grinder pair for me when I finally get em. Need great grinders when you have great vapes and herbs

Just curious which cranks you have used? Cheapy ebay ones? Or screw-down tops? I've never had a single issue with my Zeus Vortex in several years of ownership.... and the reviews speak for themselves. Most coarsest shred i've ever seen though, so not much for medium-fine grind.

Looking forward to checking out that new Black Leaf screw down from GrassCity..... hard to find quality screw down cranks!
