Still no SC...it shipped on the 15th so that's at least 8 business/delivery days.
Mine was shipped on the 9th (that's what I was told anyway), and arrived yesterday-the 26th. :/ I normally get even UPS ground shipments in a week. This was sent 1st class mail I think, so I guess that was the problem. Still, that's really slow.
Haven't used the SC yet (medium titanium 4 piece), but the fit and finish seems perfect. The screen is very tight (a shortcoming on my Chromium Crusher)-seems to be a fine mesh but not too fine. No imperfections or burrs in the metal anywhere. I did find a few 'tiny shinys' but had to use a magnifying glass to see 'em. It's almost the exact same height and diameter as the MB Triple Screen (Double Screen is slightly shorter-same diameter). It has more teeth and holes than the MB, which I expected. Holes look to the be standard 5mm, while I think MB uses 4.5mm (hardly a difference). I like the MB's design as far as fewer teeth=easier loading, but that's just my preference.
I'm sure the SC performance will be excellent, as far as grinding. IMO you don't need to pay this much to get a high quality grinder, but it sure is nice to get that extra level of finish. A Toyota Camry is pretty much as good as a Lexus, but if you can afford the Lexus...
I haven't used a Sharpstone, but the Chromium Crusher seems to be a SC clone (or wannabe clone at least). In fact you can now get a Crusher made with the same aluminum (not titanium and steel) as the SC (so they say). It's 'all CNC' as well (apparently the 'chromium' version isn't 100% CNC). I wonder if the screen tautness has been improved? That's the weak point on mine. At any rate, these new 'all CNC' crushers are pretty much the same price as the others ($17-20 for a 2.25" 4 piece), and I think, if money is tight, this may be the best buy around. Even the $30 MixnBall Classic Screen is a huge bargain compared to SC. And the Mendo prices have come down too-$50 for the 2.25" 4 piece-and it doesn't seem to have the troublesome grommet in the screen section that I got in the 3" size. Can't be sure, but it looks that way from the pic.
So as great as the SC is, I think it's the law of diminishing returns as far as the cost. Buy one if you can afford it, but don't expect superior grinding or longevity over other quality brands like MixnBall, Mendo, or possibly the new style Crusher. You just may have to put up with a burr or two on the others. The Crusher will have to prove itself, I think, but at 1/4 the price of the SC, it doesn't have to be its equal.
I just may have to pick up a new style Crusher. With all the $ I've spent on grinders to this point, what's another $20?
