Gear HE Carb Cap method

There is no denying how well it works when you throw the cap on and the bubbler milks solid white. My friend wouldn't order a cap when we were building our enails even after I told him he needed it. He said it was a waste of time and would be too much of a pain to use. Then he came over and hit mine once with the cap and ordered one on his phone right there.

Volute of Vapor
I ordered a domeless ti nail but I cancel it since my cheap low-temp DIY e-nail + carb cap is working like a charm: I put a small dab (really smaller than before) in the cup of my DYD ti nail, nothing it happened before I put the carb cap (homemade) on my dome, I can take 2 big and tasty rips!

Carb cap + constant low-temp heating= better dabs of my life, not so smooth than Hammer conduction dabs but a lot tastier.

I tried a biger dab (for me) yesterday (= or - to 0.05) and I can't finish it, I took at least 6 hits before to let it cause i was done!

Dabs are vapor too!
So this methods requires a cap which will "seal" the top of the nail off? The only air is entering thru the caps hole? So this won't work with a "castle" style nail?

Not sure how much of a 'seal' it makes, but the HE cap fit my HE Dualiti, though it's not a tight fit at all. I think any nail 20-23mm in diameter would work fine. On a castle nail, it might be possible to make the 'seal' between the top of the nail and the top edge of the carb cap. I've done that with regular old nails, touching the cap to the top of the nail. You can test it by placing a quarter or something flat on the top of the nail. If it looks like it makes good contact, I would think a carb cab would work.

But the point is a carb cap doesn't appear designed to make any kind of airtight seal. I wouldn't be surprised if air enters between the nail and cap, as well as through the top carb hole. Despite any 'leaks' things get plenty milky in the can, and retain heat better.

Sounds like it's more of a heat retention thing, than to actually reduce air flow?

This looked kind of cool for a carb cap.

Using the carb cap method with a quartz banger has been informative. Because of the clear quartz, it's easy to see what happens to the oil once the cap is on. The oil thins and spreads evenly across the surface of the quartz cup. No wonder it leaves less oil residue than not using a cap--there's no place for the oil to pool and avoid vaporization. Looks kind of cool also.

By twirling the carb cap on a ti nail, the spreading of the oil appears even more pronounced from the rotation of the intake.

reading this made me run for the ALT sale with HE nail (dualiti) and carb cap. we'll see if it is worth a try.

If i am reading correctly i have to heat the domeless nail a bit then put dab in and carb cap and torch the carb cap directly?

Heat your nail, get it to the right temp, while drawing very lightly, smear your dab as thinly across the nail as you can, then cover with the cap to keep the vapor IN and the temp from dropping. draw as you like, cracking the cap as you get to the end.

This is what my dab-bar-tender does, and it's always awesome.

For a big flavor kick, try loading the dab on the nail cold, then cover with carb cap and heat the whole thing until vapor starts coming out the carb hole, then draw. For big dabs, repeat heating and drawing leaving the cap on the whole time. Mmmm..so goood.

I think my dabs are too little for this method. By the time I get it off the dabber onto the nail, it's gone.
Sometimes I cap anyway, if it's a bigger small dab  and I get a 2nd small hit.

Why did this thread die suddenly? It was so good and informative. I can't find a good cap for my Quartz banger. I have a plain ceramic domeless with carb cap.

One example. If I get a pool because the temperature was so low, would you recommend putting on the cap and reheating when everything is cold? Since ceramic tends to crack, would this strategy fail to work?

I found a quartz cap for my castle... but, the dude at the LHS gave me a great idea... use your dab pad to cover it! should work on just about any configuration - just flap the corner right over the opening.

I wouldn't reheat ceramic. you could just do a dab reheat to try to get that puddle, from a bit further away to avoid burning it, or just burn it off to clean, and try again.

Shatter or other firm/easy to handle concentrates seem to work best for me... chill your tools down a bit, so that the stuff doesn't stick. I drop into the center and then cover with the cap I hold in my other hand... if I didn't have a free-standing oil rig, I'm not sure if I could use a cap as well.

I have a glass bowl/slide I got with another bubbler, works great as a carb cap. I think you need to play with the heat a bit. My ceramic nail stays hot the longest of any of them, if yours is cool enough to puddle, you just need to heat it a bit more initially.

This works with ti, however I would not try it with ceramic as like you said it will most likely crack. A common method some users and I previously have used is dropping the dab in cold then heating until you see smoke from your ti cap airhole, get the low temp dab, then heat it up again and repeat for higher temps. I do not think this would work in your situation however, just due to the heat transfers between ceramic being so slim on easily cracking. IF you're looking for a quartz banger cap just use a marble in the meantime, and if you want to bust out the bank go ahead and grab a cap made for them http://www.ebay.com/itm/Halen-Honey-Hole-Quartz-Carb-Cap-Dabber-/171617998268

I cringed reading this LHS tip and at the people supporting this/believe it is safe. I have had silicon pieces of my pads come off from using my ti tool (albeit aggressively) and vaporizing even a little bit of silicone would most likely outweigh any health vaporizing benefits, not to mention the pads are not tested to withstand such heat or function as such. If you are talking about using it as a honeybucket cap, there is even more heat touching the silicone as the arm will also touch and possibly melt your pad. (releasing gasses I'd assume, not quite what I'd like to inhale). IMO if youre capping your rig unless you are completely out of options use the same material as your nail for your cap. Some nails just can't be capped like the quartzcastle (to an extent) and your best bet for those situations is either sucking it up and doing full temps, or a mediocre cap with a quartz or glass (if youre really on the low budget).

very informative thread, now i need someone to talk me out of a 710 whip kit stat! That seems to me that it would give me the best of all worlds, including a low cost entry to the enail world

Yeah I'm having the same trouble trying to convince myself I don't need a 710 whip kit, damn you VAS!

Sorry are you both referring to the analog enail by domeless.com? If that's the case go to fb groups and buy a analog dnail, or just buy one straight off their site for 70$, that being said if you have basic soldering skills and availability just make one yourself for like 20ish bucks based on diy guides. Even looking at getting a larger controller so I've heard the mini auber controllers are just remarked xt7100s from china which are ~20$, so honestly (and my eventual goal) you can build a digital enail quite cheaply as long as you have the technical know-how. Ceramic enails are generally a no-go in my books and quartz will last you much longer.

reviving this thread as I picked up the 710 Whip from the cannabis cup this past 4-20. I have to say I LOVE this thing! Torch dabs never tasted burnt to me before I got this.
