Has anyone else noticed a big jump in their IQ after starting MMj?

36y old here. I tried MMj for the fist time at the end of March. Been experimenting with it almost daily since. I say experimenting vs using, because I approach things with an engineering mindset since I'm an engineer. I take notes, try to use some sort of control subject, observation, etc.

I found one specific technique and strain that has worked really well for my joint and muscle pain issues. LA Confidential. But I found that there is a very unique phenomenon that happens in the way I now does, my IQ goes up.

Current technique is a low temperature dab on a quartz nail (rooster apparatus) with a very small amount of concentrate. Basically I'm micro dabbing. 0.5g of concentrate is lasting me >30 days with dosing 2-3 times per day, I'm guessing that means my use is quite low based on what I've seen of non medical discussions.

The reason I say my IQ goes up is I find my ability to understand and visualize mathematical equations drastically increases. I've always been good at engineering and decent at math, but on small doses of this strain I get a mega boost. I only recently found out it's unusual to visualize formulas and their graph shapes, I thought this was how everyone did math. I've always been able to visualize, but one MMj the process becomes so much easier. Right after dosing I find myself addicted to studying math, physics, astrophysics, control theory, etc. Basically the more technical it is the happier my brain is trying to sort it out and understand it. I've learned more math and physics in the last 45 days than I probably have in my entire schooling combined and I'm retaining it.

I was always told "pot: makes you dumb and lazy and I have had that experience, but I quickly found out not all "pot" has the same effect... who knew... not me the noob LOL. It's had the opposite effect on me, but I have not been able to find anyone else reporting the same effect to this degree (probably due to most using higher doses). I have seen a few medical reports of small increases due to low doses, but what I'm experiencing doesn't feel small. I've had 1 volunteer test with me and their spacial cognitive abilities were greatly increased along with their motivation. I'm only on a sample size of 2 right now though so it's still quite inconclusive due to lack of sufficient data points to find a trend.

The gain I receive is temporary, but I've sold some difficult issues I had quickly after being stuck and then dosing because my pain level was high. I quickly correlated the problem solving and dosing, then ran a few tests with different strains. Some were similar, but no where near what LA Confidential does to me.

I see research that cannabis effects the white matter in the brain, namely the corpus callosum. Most seem to be negative, but the effect I'm experiencing could be related to this. I already know I'm non hemisphere dominant (whole brained) and also ambidextrous. I'm wondering if the cannabis compounds could be assisting or blocking the transmission between the brains hemispheres across the corpus callosum membrane.

The effects on the corpus callosum could explain CBDs effects working as anti seizure medications (Charlotte's Webb strain, watch the Dr Sanjay Gupta story on it).

I work around lots of medical people, but I have to keep my use private because I don't want to lose my job. It's a bummer because this is a close as I'll probably get to meeting up with a curious Neurologist to run some functional MRIs on me to study the active parts of my brain so I can see why things are so different and the complex/abstract becomes so easy/natural.

Anyone know an awesome Neurologist that want's a volunteer for study?

P.S. if my spelling or grammar is poor, that's just an engineer thing. I'm non medicated while writing this.

Sooo I make art by math. I can't delve too much into my profession without making your head explode, but I am a special fx artist! I blow shit up for a living. I totally feel you on this front as I sneak a toke at work from time to time. It deeeeeeeeefinitely helps me work better :) The numbers and physics simulations speak to me.

Actually here, this is a glimps into what I do for "mathy art" but for a different game

I was just sitting here, on the couch, in my stained and undersized underwear, drinking a beer for breakfast, taking massive tokes through my Heat Island, and realized I forgot to wipe my ass after shitting because I was so fucking stoned.

Yep. Definitely a much wiser (and wider) man these days...

Kinda sounds like a play out of the @dorkus_molorkus handbook...

Years ago, I once smoked at work. We were pulling an all-nighter to get a big project done and the boss pulled out his bong! Hell yes, I thought, but it was a big mistake and I wasn't able to focus.
I do think vaporizing is better for my brain in the long term, but I'm still pretty spacey when high.

My dosage has escalated over the years (due to my medical issues it helps keep me on level ...) but my experience is not unlike yours. I don't think I wrote a single exam after 1st year of University where I hadn't smoked on the way in (I didn't vaporize at the time)

Lots of people comment over the years that they "wish they could function on pot like me" ... but the reality of it is ... I wish I could function like they do without pot ... (and could just use pot recreationally ... man that would be cool! ...)

Certain strains work really well for me ... and I vary strains based on what effect I want ... but I'm a Sativa dominant guy because I start at 5-7 in the morning and go to 11pm-3am at night ... cannabis helps keep me on task ... keeps me from derailing too far regardless of my mental state (which is always somewhere between significantly depressed to significantly elated ... the life of a type II rapid cycling bipolar ...)

I'm lucky that I'm a software developer, architect, and designer ... and unnaturally gifted at what I do and seeing patterns and potential problems etc ... popular media has portrayed "us types" as being stoners and somewhat dysfunctional so it all0ws me a lot of leeway in my job relations ... (they always think of me as that "crazy exocentric IT person" which allows me a great deal of free reign ...)

When I consume cannabis ... my ability (and more so my motivation) ... to solve complex problems goes WAY up ... it's enjoyable as opposed to being work when I'm high ... but if I wasn't high it would be annoying because I'd rather be doing something else :)

So ... what am I saying here? I'm not sure to be honest :) ... that being said ... I do have a point ... and my point is that cannabis helps different people in different ways ...

I've wanted to give up at times ... and cannabis has kept me going ... it's allowed me to add some perspective and "hope" that tomorrow will be better (while still accomplishing something today despite my severe depression). My thoughts and ramblings in this post are really "rambling on" ... I've been having one of those months ... life is really tough and some days its tough to even envision how you will make it to tomorrow ... but life keeps on ticking ... there's only one chance ....

It certainly increases my ability to visualize me....not in pain.

Pain lowers IQ.

So... what's interesting is that LA Confidential is an Indica and traditionally, it's the Sativa strains that helps ADHD.

So I assume you ingest Cannabis purely for it's pain management properties right?

For me, I use Cannabis to treat my ADHD-PI. My ADHD-PI is characterized by the typical ADHD symptoms with a strong fatigue component. I've only tried two medications (due to a shitty family doctor), Ritalin and Dexedrine and neither do as good of a job of getting rid of my fatigue then Cannabis. Hands down.

Back in my inexperienced days, I had no clue about what types of Cannabis there were out there and I smoked whatever I could get hands on and that ended being Indica's. Then I got my hands on an extremely high quality sativa called Green Crack and it was like candy to my brain. Seriously.

You said that you experienced an IQ bump when you smoked and I experienced that in a huge way. That fatigue I feel all the fucking time is like a dark cloud on my brain that prevents neurons from firing and making connections (actively or passively). Cannabis is like a hurricane banishing that cloud away. Both my insight and my problem solving abilities skyrocket after medicating.

Unfortunately, Cannabis is not a permanent solution due to some shitty side effects:
  1. Having less control over my hyperfocus. This is really annoying when I got shit to do and I read something that catches my interest and I start reading about that and I forget about the shit I have to do.
  2. Physical impairment. Cannabis improves my mental focus but makes me clumsier.
  3. Greater fatigue. When I ingest Cannabis for my ADHD, there's a sweet spot in terms of the amount of Cannabis I need to ingest before my ADHD is alleviated. Too little and I'm a mess and more fatigued than normal. Also, when the Cannabis "wears out", the come down can be pretty shitty and involve a lot of fatigue.
I would LOVE to talk to a Neurologist (or anyone for that matter) about this because I feel that it's pretty damn magical how Cannabis can completely get rid of my mental fatigue and in such a drastic fashion.

Whatever that chemical process is, I want them to isolate it and put it in a a god damn pill format that doesn't have those shitty side effects as well.

The biggest stoner I have ever met was a PhD student majoring in Artificial Intelligence/Neuroscience at MIT, and one of the brightest people I know. He would stay up for days on end, just tokin' and codin'! He'd go full tilt on his thesis like this for weeks on end, developing concepts and programming them. I might see him sober for a few days if he got stuck on a real heady math problem, but basically this guy did 9+ years at MIT totally high, and at the top of his field. I'm convinced he wouldn't have been the innovator he has become without cannabis.

I wonder if some of the focusing effect that MJ users report is like the focusing effect that music has. Studies have shown music improves productivity on repetitive tasks, boosts ones mood while working and improves accuracy on some cognitive tasks, but can impair some complex tasks. This pretty much describes my experience with cannabis as well.

I got my BS in Accounting in 18 months, the final 6 months were only made possible by cannabis.

When I am well medicated, I can grasp mathematical concepts much better. I actually see things formatted the way they did it on the TV show "Numbr3s", though nowhere near that advanced. But I get the graphical sort of imagery to support the math...

My hubby can sleep with mj. That's about it. :)

i find it helps narrow my focus onto the task at hand if...

When I was studying, I had to be in the mindset i wanted to stay in during the onset of the effect (read, buzz comes on), which kept me there.
The few times I used, and on my way to study I come across someone who starts chatting, I had a hard time getting into study mode again. If I'm already in study mode when the buzz came on, I was easily able to stay in that zone and be far more productive than when studying straight.

Can anyone relate to this scenario?

Something I learned back in my college cramming days ... peak learning time decreases over time but you can slow down the decrease with a stimulant, exercise and for me at the appropriate moment a few well timed hits can help me squeeze out that last bit of memory/thought/energy and allow me to push through the task. Senior year project we were placed in teams and had to create a computer system for a real company. We would work at my off-campus apartment sometimes all night. One night we were fading fast and I would chug two cups of coffee and do a few pushups, sit ups, jumping jacks and I'd be able to continue for another 30 minutes before becoming fatigued again. When the coffee and exercise stopped working I grabbed my bong and the team went bat-shit angry and wanted to know WTF I thought I was doing. I told them it was the only way I could continue and since they were pretty much done contributing awhile ago they could bare with me or leave. I didn't want to get high - I just wanted a reset. I took a couple hits and drank a few cups of coffee and knocked out code for another two to three hours with the team peer reviewing in the background. Needless to say...the next time we hit the wall on an all nighter and I broke out the bong nobody wanted any themselves but they didn't complain when I did.

I also find that some of my problem solving epiphanies come from a long run while baked. I'm talking some real AHA! moments. BUT I also find that some of those brilliant ideas turned out not to be not so brilliant once I'm not high and unless I write them down as soon as the run is over I can't bring back the finer details that made it brilliant.

Effing right woman.

Not medicated = An intelligent potato. I sorta know what's going, but its too tiring to find out what is in fact going.
Medicated to the gills = Pattern recognizer extraordinaire. My brain can magically see patterns without me having to focus. And when I DO focus, I see even more. This is especially so in things I like (like sports).

I only started using Cannabis when I was 28 so I know for a fact that it did not "hinder" my intellectual development.

I'm so glad to hear other people having the same type of experience. Cannabis has such a bad stigma and because of such, its very isolating.. especially to the intelligent stoner who understands that no employer in the world (at this point of time) will tolerate Cannabis at a work place.

Yep, unmedicated, my ability to initiate focus and sustain focus on things that do not have an external locus of stimuli (IE studying in silence from a book like studying) is almost non-existent. But medicated with Cannabis, I can be studying, then I get distracted and then I recognize that I'm distracted then I get angry and then I force myself back on task.

That 3rd party observing of what's happening while it's happening is only achievable through Cannabis.

Because for certain people (like me), Cannabis gives me almost unrestricted access to my memories as well as a working memory to apply the memories to.

And with regards to those brilliant ideas not turning out to be all that brilliant, absolutely. And that is the case of being highly disciplined in terms of documenting what you are thinking about. It's important to keep documenting regardless of if you want to continue or not because I find memories very fleeting. (and this process will probably require additional consumption of cannabis).

Combusting gives me a weed hangover (can't think straight or logically for 2-3 days) if I have more than 2-3 bongs or a blunt.
It just ruins everything. Fucks me up completely. Makes me feel retarded and not in control of myself. I twitch more often, have strange anxieties creep up on me and manifest into uncomfortable idisyncracies.. (picking nails, biting skin around fingers, scratching neck, struggling to maintain eye contact, fear that I look stupid..)

If I vape then I enjoy a better high and am back to normal in a reasonable and predictable amount of time.. Not sure why combusting does this to me, but I am glad it does because it's a deterrent.
I feel more 'in my element' when I vape! I can get high on SMOKE and suffer from it's shitty effects and paranoia / twitch inducing shittiness, or I can vape and benefit from a clean high that seems to fuse with my current state of consciosness very smoothly. More complimentary than overwhelming, but still strong and potent!

And as a result of this, I enjoy my thoughts and actions more, and let myself flow in conversation and internal dialogue and have a great time!

To think that I loved weed for so long but never knew how bad combusting was for my psyche. It was a lot of accumulated time feeling uncomfortable that led me to enjoy a 2 year break from drugs.
Now that I am vaping it feels like a continuation of my 2 years of sobriety with a little extra 'spice' to it which feels 100% natural in every day.

Vape well, eat well, live well.

I can relate, as I was low on material and went to a friend's for dinner recently. They served up steak and bong hits, both of which I have lost my taste for. I went with it because I love these guys, and will invite them over for a vegetarian/vape feast to break the news to them that no more meat also includes steak.

As far as the bong hits go, next time I will insist on using the glass vapor bat I gave them if I don't bring a real vape along, last time I brought my evo but I still have an lsv with a hydratube so that's what I'll bring. I don't like bong hits at all compared to vaping, it fogs my mind and increases inflammation in my body. But sometimes it's better than nothing, I would almost rather drink whiskey at that point though. Almost.
