Been playing with the Glass bat VG. Here's what I think so far:
Though the ceramic filter is a full inch in from the opening, it appears it takes less lighter time to vape out of this than the glass sherlock VG. Not unexpectedly, though, it does hit hotter and harsher - but all bats in my experience, whether for vaping or combustion, are hotter than their non-bat brethren.
I found another design difference between this and the glass sherlock VG - the opening at the base of the bowl that the vapor flows through is much larger in the bat. So I've found I have to pay a bit more attention to manual breath control with the bat than with the sherlock.
I also think the taste is better out of the sherlock than out of the bat, using the same herbs and lighter. I assume it's either from the steel in the door or just an effect of the shorter distance the vapor travels between bowl and mouth - maybe the greater distance in the sherlock lets some of the butane impurities precipitate out? Just theorizing here, but whatever the cause, there is a taste difference IMO.
On the other hand, the bat produces vapor faster (for me at least). A soft flame lighter with the bat produces vapor about as quickly as a torch with the sherlock. And the steel door doesn't get that hot, and both the door and the bat as a whole cools pretty fast. I can see this as a better portable (especially stealth) option than the sherlock. And it definitely has one big advantage - there is no removable top to drop and break. In fact, I cracked the top of my sherlock VG while waiting for the bat to come. Still works fine, just ugly
. That definitely won't happen with the bat - it's one single piece of glass.
Lastly, the bat really does fit perfectly into my 18mm glass pieces with a simple grommet. However, when I emailed a comment about that to VG, and mentioned that I would buy an official water pipe adapter if they made one, they said they have rejected that idea "for a number of reasons". They didn't explain, but maybe there's an issue with the ceramic filter in that sort of use? Makes me a bit nervous using the bat that way, but it does produce wonderful vapor in my glass.
Overall, a decent addition to the family. I still prefer the glass sherlock when I'm sitting at home, but iot's the bat that's coming with me when I'm out and about today.
