It's been 2 years since I posted that thread about interest in getting into/learning fly fishing and or Tenkara fly fishing.I eventually settled on getting a full rod/reel fly setup.

I bvought the rod/reel/fly-line setup, and a chest bag and the basics to get started. However, I didn't have waders and boots, and if I waited several months my fly fishing license would cost half as much (because I hadn't lived in the state long enough).

Anyway...because of that gap, the cost of acquiring the waders and wading boots, and getting into some other hobby, it went on the back-burner. Well, I just had the first week paid off work I've taken in two years, and I started it with a several hour intro to fly-fishing class, and then went back and ordered some waders and boots. (Korkers boots were in-stock, and they gave an old pair of loaner waders at no charge till my new Simms waders come in).

I've been out a couple times this week, and will be going out again in the morning (my last vacation day), and I'm loving 9it so far, I'm going out by myself because I don't know anyone that fishes...but I'm reading books, and watching videos, and I live near rivers that can be fished year-around. So, I will keep at it.I can barely cast right now, but it gets better each time.

So, here's to my first few times out to embarrass myself :puke:

I'm trying. Going to take some advice and go out to to the park to practice my casting with targets in the grass, as well as simply practicing my timing with my overhead casting, as often as possible before work.

I don't expect to catch any fish for a while...but I can keep practicing till it happens! I'll be working on it this fall and winter.

Post up any questions you have along the way. I encourage all to take the hour free lesson from Orvis but all fly shops offer something similar.

Some basic items:

Most rivers are not that big and wide, and with a 9' rod, you really won't need to cast more than 30 feet. Focus on getting your line out straight and not casting a mile. You will learn to launch the line in time, but long casts and double-hauls don't really come out unless you are saltwater fishing.

Your hand and knuckles should move back and forth through the cast like you are making a punch. Keep the rod tip pointed to the sky. Keep the rod tip up, your knuckles vertical through your back and forward casts. Let the weight of the fly line bend the rod tip back and forth- that is the motion and energy that will cast your line strait out. If you break your wrist and point the rod behind you and in front of you (instead of towards the sky), you eliminate the tip flex and will be challenged to cast straight or far.

It took me a few trips before I found my first trout, don't get down about it. have fun and enjoy where you are. Trout do not live in ugly places.

I can see you are already hooked! Have fun!
