Battlefield 3 was EXTREMELY hard on me when i first jumped into the online multiplayer, but it was mainly for a few reasons that arent such a big deal now:
1. This was before the Nov 22nd (i think) patch that fixed the negative mouse acceleration. The aiming was horrible, if you move from point A to point B on your mousepad slow you would do a 180 turn, but if you moved that same distance at a fast speed you would only turn lets say 2/3 as far. so twitch aiming, which i alwaysdo, was impossible. Not to toot my own horn (im not that flexible) but i'm pretty awesome at FPS games, been playing them since wolf3d, but it was just so hard to hit anything for the first month of playing BF3.
2. Every. single. fucking. person had the infrared scope it seemed. The IRNV, you can unlock it for pretty much any primary weapon by getting ~100 kills with said weapon. They have since nerfed it, but at the time you could spot someone from hundreds of yards away, plain as day. bring up your scope and anyone in sight just lit up orange as hell and the environment was blue. This pretty much eliminated any possibility for stealth or making use of the games diff types of camo because ppl would see you no matter what. Now days, the IRNV has a much much more limited range, and is really only good for CQB or close-mid range engagement.
3. there was something else, but i cant remember
at any rate, I highly suggest you guys start out as engineer, thats all i play as, for a couple reasons. First and foremost, you get the welder. This is insanely useful. Me and my friend always hop in a tank and whoever is in the top machine gun turret will jump out and weld the tank when it needs repaired. If we start engaging an enemy tank, the person will hop out on the opposite side and start welding while the driver shoots the main cannon at the enemy tank. this makes your tank nearly indestructable unless enemy infantry manage to get on the other side and take out the welder. However, they have recently nerfed the welder repair rate and buffed the damage enemy tanks do to eachother, so it isnt as easy to keep a tanks health up while its getting pelted by an enemy tank. Still, we've got an INSANE amount of kills with the tanks, thats our main thing.
the other reason to go engineer is because you get rocket launchers in addition to your primary (which includes the not-too-shabby SCAR). The RPG/SMAW are great for when you know an enemy is hiding right around a corner or behind cover where you cant get a line of sight to him but you can get him with the splash damage from a rocket. They can be used on tanks too but it takes a few shots and usually the tank will know where you are after you fire the first one and duck back behind cover so its best if you have another person shooting RPGs from another location to give them a little whack-a-mole sort of challenge of guessing whos going to pop upa nd fire next. The Javelin recently got a buff against tanks and is the better choice for taking them down. Theres also the stinger, which of course is for taking down aircraft. but it sucks because the aircraft will just deploy flares as soon as you fire it and flares seem to work 100% of the time. by the time you get another missile loaded and locked on, theyre flares are ready to be deployed again, so its pointless.
My loadout is always:
SCAR with silencer (reduces kick at the cost of a tiny fraction of damage and of course reveals your location less) and foregrip (also helps with kick by reducing muzzle life), and the scope varies depending on what the map calls for.
RPG/SMAW (same weap basically ones US and ones RU) since theyre more useful than the javelin or stinger in a wider range of situations
some pistol with a flashlight that i barely use. flashlights used to be hugely overpowered. someone could shine a flashlight in your face from like 50ft away and blind you enough that its really had to hit them, needless to say it was even worse in CQB.
you also can equip a bonus modifier thing (forget what theyre called). theres ones that give you more ammo, one that increase your resistance to explosives a bit, one that give you more rockets, one that increases your sprint speed. but i find the most useful to be the one called suppression. In BF3, when you get shot your screen blurs and you get the red radial blur sort of shit and it kinda throws your aim off and overall just makes it harder to hit shit. This is called suppression. the Suppression perk (for lack of a better term) increases the amount of suppression ppl suffer when you hit them. it seems like ones you start shooting them theyre done for with this perk on. but theres also the perk called Cover that gives you resistance to suppression as well. As you get to be a higher rank, you unlock perks that apply not only to you, but everyone on your squad. So my friend will equip squad suppression and i'll equip squad cover. very good combination.
Anyway, i've rambled on about it enough for now. Here's some links tho for you other BF3 PC players:

Feel free to add me as a friend and join our platoon. We're could use some more team players in our squad! And if you play with us you'll get the benefit of our squad suppression and squad cover perks in addition to your own! We currently just use Steam friends voicechat, but we'd do teamspeak if we had more ppl.
my gtx570 died and i'm waiting for an RMA replacement, so you wont see me on BF3 until it shows up, which should be between tuesday and thursday next week.
