Ok it's the week-end I took some time to answer all the past posts. But first a little update from Smiss to clear things up: "The V5 fixed temperature is 205-210°C"
and I suggested them new settings for the 3 temp version (as per the quick poll in this thread) to which they said they would adjust them if it is possible.
I think we should start another thread to discuss the FM8, as it is really a different product. Apparently it's not ready yet, we'll have to wait a little bit...
Onto the catching up now!
IMO it's a bad idea to have a fixed temp vape operate at nearly 400 F, and it sure doesn't make any sense that a bowl would last longer at 392F or above, vs. the 385 used as the lowest setting on the 3 temp version. It's a fact that the higher the temp used, the quicker the bowl contents are vaped away. .
It's not that bad because it extracts bloody fast and has a "punch in your face" aspect that appeals to joint smokers much more than delicate low temperature vapor. In a sense the fixed temp version is really good to convert someone progressively to vaporization. The person will get really dense hits (but ok the session is quite short) and will also get the high temp sedative effects.
Many of my smoking friends enjoyed the V5-fixed more than my Ascent and their initial reaction was "ha you see, with this one there is something!" Only later on will they be able to enjoy the incredible taste of low temp sesssions... but they need to quit that fixation on visible exhale and it's hard for some!
That being said, starting that high is inefficient in the sense that the hits are so dense that you end up exhaling most of the load, and well, it's wasted! Also the load is cashed in no time, it can give the impression you're not getting enough for your money....
My issue may be my taste buds, very sensitive. I can taste adhesive. Out of all of my vapes its consistently got "that" taste. I actually enjoy the taste of abv and conduction vapes, but when inhaling from the FM with nothing in it I am very dissuaded to use it over all of the other more pure vapes I have.
I think you are refering to that foul Polymide yellow tape taste. Smiss said they would do their best to improve that aspect. But I can tell you that you should insist and do a lot more empty runs while *blowing* inside the mouthpiece, as to force as much hot air over that material as possible. I didn't count but I did a lot with mine before it came down to acceptable levels, and yet it was still faintly there (it completely disappeared since, I can assure you)
The key is really air flow. When I was not blowing, I put the device in a room that had a lot of forced ventilation (fans or extractors would do), with the bowl set to max temp. I must have emptied at least two full charges this way.
I just wish the company would register an account on here as the good people of fc can only help a committed manufacturer
They said they would, but it takes time and money to assign a person for the job. I'm not sure that the previous users that came claiming to be from the company were really from Smiss, could have been resellers. At least I gave Smiss the instruction and who to contact, now the ball is in their camp.
Pretty sure it's the G3, not V3, and it turned out to have some kind of impurities, and was never released in the US market.
Again from Smiss, I was told that the G3 is officially on hold for now, after the horrific reviews it had in its FC thread. They do listen to our feedback and the G3 was not ready for prime-time. There were also suspicions that it could have been stopped after Pharmacor took offense, but that's speculation only...
Both of the two model 5 versions (fixed temp and 3 temp) use the same battery management, resulting in a vaping time of about twice as long for the fixed temp version. So it's a tradeoff if you buy the 3 temp version- more temps to use, but less vaping time.
Having both and with the above clarification about the fixed temperature setting, I don't think it's true. Actually it's the inverse, if you use the V5-3temps (ahem, it was easier to call it the 5S, even if inaccurate...) on blue then the batteries last even longer.
They must be taking our comments on board judging by the evolution speed and nature of the mods.
They sure do, and if they don't read here directly, I make sure to forward our remarks on a regular basis.
I think having different Flowermates create different perspectives. Mine extracted quicker than my Solo with the same amount of herb. Never would it allow a second bowl after 6 minutes or so of vaping.
Right I agree with that, with the variable on red or with the fixed on "between purple and red" heh, extraction is too fast and efficiency suffers.
I wasn't speculating that part, its just how I see it when looking at both disassembled units I was comparing specifically the Solo to the FM. Like mentioned above, irregardless of price the Solo has a cleaner and safer airpath. My evidence is that I have opened and ruined both vapes to see the internals.
Yes but it's really not that bad either. I don't know why
@Egzoset made a fixation on it (because he's the most anal of us all?
) but I think most of the outside air comes from the exterior directly through the venting holes and there are so many of them that only a tiny fraction can be drawn from the internals. Pressure is not building up.
In the Ascent on the other hand, we discovered that the air-path is much tighter and that indeed it allows a considerable amount of air to be drawn from the electronics and batteries compartment. The various fixes proposed attest to that and visibly improve the vapor/air ratio (ie denser vapor) But there again, it doesn't really bother most people...
What I've found that I don't like about this model, when using outside in bright light, is that I have a hard time telling when it's on.
The worst is when it auto shuts-off at the end of your session, and you put it aside because the bowl is cashed... only to discover later that you forgot to turn it off... the next time you open the bowl and see that bloody light still on! I once completely drained my battery this way and was met with the flashing red light as soon as I tried to restart the heater...
JAlso the new Pyrex mouthpiece hardly fits into the bottom compartment, still haven't thought of a solution for that
I found that by storing the mouthpiece the other way down (turn it around) solves or at least eases the problem. But as with everything made of glass it's hard to have very small tolerances. It is less a problem with the silicone mouthpiece as it flexes.
Also what are the walls of the heating chamber made of? Glass or plastic?
In the V5 the bowl is ceramic. In the V8 we don't know yet.
Hopefully a spacer will help me pack less and still get the hits Im looking for.
As I tried to express in my previous post, you need to tamp the load. Make a compact puck out of it, you'll get much less flying particules and the vapor will be denser.
I'll be watching this thread about the ceramic screens to see if that helps with smaller loads. I don't like to pack much into a conduction vape.
Don't pack, compact! See above!
I got the idea from the DaVinci Ascent thread where people took to adding glass flower pipe screens to take up space and also distribute heat through the load. The Ascent bowl is the bottomless pit without the glass flower pipe screens!
As I said I'm of the puck school and never had to use any glass flowers in my Ascent nor have I felt the need to have the heat distributed. The ABV is uniform, the heater has plenty of power. Just compact the load and make a flat puck!
How often do you recharge your Vapormax? (...) given that most rechargeable batteries do better if fully (or almost fully) discharged before recharging, then I'd prefer to charge it less often
No this is not true with Lithium batteries, they hate being fully discharged! A rule of thumb is to never deplete them more than 80% of their capacity, in order to increase their life. In all cases, whether you discharged it fully or not, it's imperative to charge them up as soon as possible and never ever let them sit fully discharged for a long time. If you can't afford a full charge immediatly because you are short of time, do a quick charge for 10-20 minutes at least to top them up, and complete the charge later on.
